Eudora... Now based on Mozilla Thunderbird. The Penelope project's intention is to join the Eudora user experience with the Mozilla platform. We intend to produce a version of Eudora that is open source and based on Mozilla and Thunderbird. It's *not* our intention to compete with Thunderbird; rather, we want to complement it.

We are committed to both preserving the Eudora user experience and to maintaining maximum compatibility, for both developers and users, with Thunderbird. It is our goal to build a single development community around Thunderbird and Eudora, so both mailers advance faster than they previously more...

Correo is dead. Thunderbird is soon to be dead. Mulberry is dead. Sparrow is all but dead. GyazMail is rarely updated and has poor html/rtf support. Wish Penelope Eudora would be updated.

Eudora OSE still has some issues, as another commenter pointed out the 'mark as read immediately upon opening' setting does not work, and editing the tool bars is an exercise in patience. After removing one item from the toolbar, you cannot immediately move another off, you have to click & release on the item you want to remove and then click & drag. When you remove icons from the toolbar they don't seem to show up in the customize toolbar window to allow you to drag them back to the toolbar if you wished.

An area where OSE shines, as did classic Eudora, is in how it handles mailing lists. I love the ability to only view threads with unread messages and yet show all unthreaded messages simultaneously. Also you can create shortcut buttons in the toolbar for specific mail list functions but I have not had the need to try them.

Also I like the ability to redirect a message rather than being forced to forward it.

I have tried Thunderbird and Postbox Express, while they are fine applications Eudora OSE meets my needs better. Overall it is pretty good for a 1.0 release, I can't wait to see what the future brings. I am very happy that the developers decided not to let Eudora ride off into the sunset, but rather to breathe new life into an old friend.

Yikes, this looks/feels and acts like Thunderbird, not Eudora. I've used Eudora since it was free from the University of Illinois and 6.2.4 still works great for me -- except for an smtp issue with my new web host. If anyone knows how set the smtp server port on this new 1.0 version, please let me know? Thanks...

Still an ersatz of Eudora 6.2.4 (works fine with 10.4 & 10.5, for 10.6 not tested)…

Does not import all my mailboxes… and most of my filters…

Still happily using Eudora 6.2.4 in Snow Leopard.

Happily this version of Eudore is not much different from version 8.0b9 so there were no zingers to upset me. However:

1) Why change the numbering system? Suddenly we're going from version 8 to version 1. I don't know about other, but that's confusing.

2) Some of the same problems still remain: When you open up Eudore, it *still* does not come to the front but opens behind other open windows. Is this really so difficult to fix?

3) Some settings don't work: for example: the preference setting for "mark as read immediately upon opening" doesn't work, yet if you opt for "mark as read after. . ." and change it to 0 seconds, this does work.

Also, the new Eudora didn't save my old general settings, forcing me to scour the preferences to get the program to behave again as I would like. This, I believe happened with V8.0b9 as well.

With all this, I really don't think this version earns the formal release designation. It seems that the definition of what constitutes a beta and what doesn't is getting blurrier and blurrier.

Regarding the name change, their README says this:

Beta versions of Eudora OSE were originally named just Eudora with a version
number of 8.0. This caused some confusion in that some users expected the new
version to be a regular update to Classic Eudora. Since Eudora OSE uses an
entirely different code base from Classic Eudora, in an effort to reduce the
confusion the application was renamed to Eudora OSE (Open Source Edition).
The version number was also reset to 1.0, which has the added benefit that it
is synchronized with the Penelope version number.

Then shouldn't this entry on MacUpdate.com be named Eudora OSE ? I mean, this is NOT the Eudora 1.0 from the late 1980's, so why list an incorrect name here?

I agree.

Well, the chances to confuse Eudore 1.0 on Mac OS 3 or 4 with this aren't so large, are they?
I started with OS 9 and managed to not encounter Eudora at all... I wouldn't mind if Nisus, my favorite writer started with 1.0 once again.

Eudora used to be my favourite mail client back in the day, so I was really eager to try out this version. It shows promise, but right now I'm too annoyed by new windows that pop open whenever I try to change my default fonts in the Display preference pane.

Well, it appears that some of the worst bugs have been fixed. To begin with, the latest iteration of Penelope, version 1.0b1, finally works with Thunderbird 3.x. The bug I found most annoying in the earlier versions of Penelope, with Thunderbird 2.x, was that when using the keyboard to navigate through messages, it would move them to the trash, making it necessary to navigate using the cursor if I didn't want them moved, which was made the program unusable for all practical purposes.

The choice now is to use Eudora or Thunderbird with Penelope, which are essentially the same. The version of Thunderbird included with Eudora 8.0b9 appears to be a slightly older one, v. 3.0.1, while the latest release of Thunderbird is v. 3.0.3. But Penelope works in both cases - though Eudora choked a few times on startup, refusing to display properly. But after about three restarts it finally showed the 3 pane window I use.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that this version of Eudora continues to be more stable than the last one.

Hopefully beta-testers are giving this feedback to the developers. I doubt that the developers will check Macupdate to read about the bugs people are encountering.

Still doesn't support SpamSieve. Not sure if that's a problem on Mozilla part or SpamSieve's but it needs to be fixed.
