I recently acquired quite a number of fonts and had question marks about some of the files. Mac Fontbook gave error messages and I was looking for a possibility to repair them. Too soon I bought me a license of FontDoctor, which is in my opinion an overrated and overpriced application.

It doesn't give as much detailed info on what's wrong with the font as the free Mac Fontbook does. It never repaired anything and even indicated fonts to be OK, when it was clear by the use of the font, that it wasn't OK at all.

I approached the developer for support and was asked to send the font. That was the last thing I ever heard about it.

Furthermore I want to warn about the instability. I know I have a lot of fonts, but half of the time the program just completely quits during startup.

The only nice thing I could discover is the ability to organize your font files, but that would even be more useful in combination with a good renaming function.

I like this application and have been a registered user since it first came out. But attempting to upgrade to v.8 seems to be nearly impossible due to their overly complex site.

They call giving the interface a funereal gray face an update. Too bad they're taking their design cues from Steve Jobs, whose taste has tanked lately, if iTunes 10 is any guide. Anyway, while $20 is a good price for the upgrade, for me the new interface, which they're implementing in all their products, is a turn-off. Absent any compelling functional innovations, I'll take a pass on this one - until they make this dead gray an option instead of unavoidable.

In correspondence with FontGear I was informed that they followed the suggestion I submitted in relation to FontXChange to make the gray interface an option in the preferences. But it has not yet been implemented in FontXChange, which is why I was unaware of the (apparent) change in the Font Doctor upgrade. I guess I'll have to download it and see if it's really there.

From their website:
"Version 8 introduces an updated interface, faster diagnosis and repair, enhanced reporting with charts, updated font cache cleaning, and a new font comparison tool used to contrast the unique properties of separate font files side-by-side."

Where did you find that info? I can't locate it on their site. A link would have been helpful.

We had a font that FontBook reported as having problems, and warning us to "proceed with caution". FontBook correctly advised us the 'kern' table structure and contents had problems.
We downloaded FontDoctor to set about repairing the font.
FontDoctor validated the font and incorrectly told us the font was OK and did not need repair.

FontBook is FREE and supplied with MacOS. It can validate fonts and identify problems.
FontDoctor is $70.

In our test we were unable to get FontDoctor to identify the problem, let alone attempt to fix it.

Maybe it can identify some problems, but it certainly does not identify all the problems you can identify for free using Apple's FontBook.

Proceed with caution.

How do you know that FontBook correctly diagnosed the font?

Well I know the Font was corrupt. I don't know that Font Book correctly diagnosed the font by providing all the problems the font had, but it correctly identified the font had problems, whereas Font Doctor incorrectly told us the font was OK. The font wasn't OK.
Font Doctor failed.

FD 7.7 now SL compatible!

An excellent app that I can recommend to all who have problems on their mac, esp SL. I tracked down a nasty bug/issue with MS Word 2008 - the fault was a font with two copies in two different libraries. The second font was installed by Office but it took FD to work out the issue. Now Office is running ok and is thanks to FD!

Recommended!! Cost is high for what is an app that you wouldn't have to use too many times, but worth it when all else fails - Apple's Font Book doesn't come close.

I do like FontDoctor and have used it on and off for years. However I see the latest version 7.5.1 still has that nasty tendency to unexpectedly quit when trying to "fix" problems - on a large file that means starting again and narrowing the search and as such can be very time consuming.

It really isn't possible to assess a demonstration of a piece of software that won't allow you to actually DO anything! Why can't the developer allow the repair of a limited number of fonts, even if it's only two or three?

I love it! Font Book has given me false alarms on a few occasions and this is a lot faster, too! A lot of customization available through a clean, Mac-like GUI makes for the ultimate font tool!

I especially like the feature that allows you to scan a custom location :-)

with it's ability to allow admins to lock down preferences (to keep fonts from being "fixed" in environments where compliance/liability issues are important), this tool is as good as it gets for checking and organizing fonts.

whether you'd ever WANT to "fix" a font is an entirely different story.

Has disagreements with FontExplorerX.

Though LinoType FontExplorer X finds various PostScript fonts to have missing outline files for some styles, FontDoctorX gives them a "PASS" on all tests.

Since FontExplorerX can determine that the styles *should* exist, i assume there's data about them in the suitcase.

Therefore it seems to be FontDoctorX which is mistakenly giving them a PASS on the "Missing PostScript Fonts" test and making no repairs.

I'll wait for 7.0.1. 7.0 gets stuck when trying to organize fonts on STDSongStd-Light-Acro.otf. It completely locks up PowerBook 12", PowerBook 15" and a 1.8Ghz G5. I'm not even able to Force Quit or use any other application. I have to hold the power button in to shutdown. Version 6.1.5 worked when trying to organize with that font though. I'll stick with 6.1.5 for now.
