RPGMapMakerX (formerly HexMapMaker) is a tool for drawing maps with polygonal grids. This kind of maps are used in Role Playing Games, but of course you can design them for any other purposes.

In addition of having most of the capabilities of a real painting program (such as lines, rectangles, ovals and round rectangles, drawing and filling with color and pattern, text, rubber, pipettes tools, etc.)
What's New
Version 6.2.0:
  • [New] (Textures window) layout to speed up textures selection
  • [New] (Textures window) Color filling by (pattern, colors) / textures is now selectable directly.
  • [New] New Map / Map Information dialog is now resizable, allowing previewing really big maps.
  • [Imp] (Font Properties dialog) layout and text preview.
  • [Imp] (Inks and Styles Pallet) Text styles preview.
  • [Imp] (Inks and Styles Pallet) Text styles behavior (see documentation).
  • [Fix] (Textures Window) Remembering two tiles of the same lib now works as expected.
  • [Fix] (Textures Window) Remembered textures are no longer lost in some cases...
  • [Fix] Highlight color is now always taken into account
  • [Fix] Dragging a texture within the main window no longer leaves a white frame around the filled area.
  • [Fix] (Island Fractal Generator) Selecting too many iterations should no longer crash the application.
  • [Fix] (Marker Editor) Font styles are now correctly honored
  • [Fix] Markers created at zoom factor different from 100% no longer get reduced/increased when returning to 100%.
  • [Fix] All Main window drawers no longer behave wildly when the Overview window is visible.
  • [Fix] Copying only an active layer or all visible layers no longer also copy the markers.
  • [Fix] Drawing text with no background is now really transparent.
Version 6.2.0:

Almost the ugliest piece of software I've ever seen ...

Take a look on the website, you will get a good idea about the software himself. Sorry, this is the first time I drop a comment for a software and I really had to say that :-(

Best RPG map program I have seen. And latest islands generator is a nice addition.

I wish people would actually mark things in accordance with what the program is CAPABLE of rather than the features the reviewer /understands/.

Best campaign mapper I've seen - the graphics are customisable, so the 'ugly' point is flawed. The generation aspects and other in depth features EASILY make this worth the money.

Ridiculous. How can they charge $37 for this? This kind of simple software is free for Windows / Linux. This one is as ugly as Campaign Cartographer.

You'd better buy Graphic Converter or simply use AppleWorks.

Stuff like this isn't free for any platform as far as I'm aware.

Please post URLs - and not just of 'simple' mapping utils. If you think this is a simple mapping util, and that you could just use appleworks, then you've completely missed the point of this application, as well as failing to read up on it at all.

It's like you trying out photoshop and saying "But I can draw things in MS Paint! This isn't worth the money!"

Not free (Windows): Campaign Cartographer, Fractal Mapper.

Free (Windows): AutoRealm, Dungeoncrafter, RPG map designer, etc...

Free (OS X): Reptile (not very good)

This is by far the best maping program I have tried. When trying to make maps for any RPG most every program falls short in being able to do what you want it to.

This program is very flexable and the support is outstanding. It allows you to create maps with links to move to other maps, like scrolling across a landscape or to move into a city.

It is a little complex and does require a little time to get the real hang of things but this time is very well spent.

Give it a try, put a little effort into it and you will be amazed at what can be done with it,

I'm curious -- I came across this while looking for actual mapping tools I could use to take
-- an aerial photo of 40 acres
-- a topo map of the same
(Both those are downloaded from the images zoomed in close at www.terraserverusa.com -- so they register correctly; I was able to make the "white" part of the topo map transparent, leaving only the contour lines, and drop that over the aerial photo (done both with GraphicConverter on the Mac and PhotoEdit on Windows, same result).

I now need to lay an 11x11 grid on top of this image -- laid out by a surveyor, and I have it as a plotter printout and scans, and can register three of the four corners of that to points on the topo and photo (courtesy of the Coastal and Geodetic Survey).

What I want to do after that is attach a sketch map (already done, but being revised year after year as plant cover, fire, and erosion change the site), along with notes and photos to each of those grid squares.

Right now, the grid sketches and notes -- all 11x11=121 of them -- are on paper, and the site's steep, remote, and complicated.

I've put each of those 121 squares, topo map and sketches done by the botanical survey, into Sony Clie form -- on Memory Sticks, because I can revise those in the Sony Clie using MobiPaint (sketch on top of the image to show changes) then export back to the Mac.

I'd like to be able to make new layers out of these, over time.

And yes, I know it sounds like ArcInfo GIS, a few thousand dollars, a Windows box, and a staff -- but this on my own in my spare time.

It moves a lot slower than a RPG -- it's a 200 year project -- but it's at least as complicated. There are invaders (problem plants, drunks on 4-wheel-drive ATVs trespassing and tearing up the work) and natives (bear, deer, 300 plus species of plants) and major events (two forest fires since 1987, some slow landslides, some amazingly fast erosion) and minor ones (the Monarch butterflies come through, and lay eggs on the milkweed and hatch out and the next generation continues on the migration) and situations (the couple of patches where it's safe to land a hang glider or paraglider if someone needs to) ....

So -- given that this has a large manual and takes a lot of work to understand -- would anyone opine whether it might be useful for me?

1 star? Come on people.. Don't you check a product's site before testing it? If you had you'd see this isnt a simple map drawing package.. You're giving it one star because you couldn't work it out in the few minutes you used to "test" it and lost patience. Then you looked for flaws. RTFM. >.<
The target audience is RPers, and often you need a lot of detailed maps. Graphic Converter is not a solution to the problem at all. Typical tabletop RPers are used to reading heavy manuals, so this is no big deal. It's complicated because it's powerful and flexible.

This app seems great for what it's intended, and any serious role-player would see it's value - the maps aren't ugly, it lets you edit the graphics! I've only used it for less than an hour and am seriously considering purchase for a campaign world and setting for stories I'm writing. $34 isn't too much for something as specialised as this, what else are you going to use? Nothing else on the mac does this stuff (that I'm aware of!)

Make it freeware and maybe... Now demo mode is bad. Maps are ugly. Not very stable. 35$, you'd better buy Graphic Converter and create your own maps.

Hardly Share Ware, more like, Buy It ware. Not really useful at all unless you buy it. The Register screen doesn't go away initially and you have to trick it to get rid of it so you can then try the program. Even Microsoft doesn't put a big red "X" and the word "Unregistered" across new documents in it's trialware.

Maybe it is worth the 34 bucks, but I won't know because I am not going to waste my time on something that masks its self in shareware garb when it is really nothing more than a commercial grab for money without fair use or real trial. Spend hours designing maps that are useless without paying him and before you will even know if you like the results? No thanks. Keep it.
