Why did the default file copy operation behavior change from v5 to v6? This has not been a change for the better. Here is what I mean:

Let's say you are copying a folder with 15 files from one location to another. Then for whatever reason, you stop the copy operation when Path Finder is in the middle of copying the 12th file. In v5, the 11 files that have completed copying would remain in the new location. But in v6, all the files disappear in the new location whenever you stop a copy operation in progress.

Why was this change made? It doesn't make any sense.

check the file operations screencast (link on the homepage), particularly, the "queue file operations" option.

Pheres replied on 07 May 2012
@gatovadio:

Thanks for trying to help. However, the issue I am experiencing has nothing to do with the file operations window redesign. In my example, I am copying a SINGLE folder with multiple files in it (i.e., it is a SINGLE file operation), so there is no queuing of any kind going on.

For some reason, the developer has fundamentally changed how copying files works in practically every normal file browser (like v5): when you cancel a large ongoing copy operation before it has completed, the file browser should leave those files that were completely copied in the new location, not erase them.

I really would like to know the logic behind why this kind of change was implemented.

i just did the following tests on both v5 and v6:

if you copy a folder with simple files inside and cancel it even after 50% completion, it won't copy anything.

if you copy a folder with packages (apps) inside, you might get orphans (app with the cross sign over its icon), if cancelled.

if you get inside a folder, select a bunch of simple files and copy them, it will leave the already finished ones, if cancelled.

if you get inside a folder, select a bunch of packages (apps) and copy them, you might get orphans, if cancelled.

Bought v5 a while ago but haven't used that much except for some work moving load of files around when needed.
Nowhere near a finder replacement for me.
Found it really useful for the dual panel and tabs, no doubt.

But now the v6 is released, even with a $15 update, I don't see enough reasons to upgrade at this price reading the 4 (and only?) new features described above.

Will give a try at this new version but will probably stick with v5 as it still supports contextual menus and it's all working real fine.

With tail firmly tucked behind me I am changing my earlier, insomnia-induced and quick to jump the gun, semi-rant below and am also upping my rating.

I do not like some of the "new" interface changes, especially the label colors and inability to add a background pic to views, but everything else is like you would expect from Cocoatech.

And I do love the ability to add metatags.

So... My apologies for flying off the handle earlier. I'll go and eat some crow for lunch!

I can't believe I am down-rating this app, but it really feels to me as the app itself has been downgraded. Having been a very longtime user of Pathfinder and one who eagerly awaits newer versions with new and useful additions to the software, I am extremely disappointed with this version. The usual customization is gone, colors are ugly, some previews are not rendering well, custom tabs and sets are gone [or at least I cannot find where they went!].

The ability to add to metatagging of files is a nice addition, but not nice enough for me to purchase this upgrade right now. I've reverted to version 5, thanks to Time Machine and am back to being happy.

I do hope the great folks at Cocoatech are listening. PF has been one of my top most used apps, but version 6 is just embarassing.

I upgraded to v5 for $20 less than 3 months before v6 came out, but they won't give me a free upgrade and expect another $20 from me. That's pathetic. And they didn't even bother to email me to let me know that the new version had come out, and there was a discounted upgrade fee. I'm very disappointed...

I believe the 5.x series are out since more than a year. So, if you only updated just three months ago, you don't seem to be an early adopter :-)
You should simply wait with your update to 6.0 for a couple more months until you feel better with the timing...

I'm not aware of any developer that offer free upgrades on licences already purchased at a discounted upgrade fee. If you had purchased a new licence at full price less than three months before the new version came out, then I think you could reasonably expect a free upgrade. Besides, if you hadn't paid for the v5 upgrade, your situation now would be exactly the same: the discount for v6 is for upgrading from v5, not v4, so upgrading from 4 to 6 would require a new licence purchase. If you purchase a Path Finder 6 upgrade now, you will have paid exactly the same amount in upgrade fees as everyone else who upgraded from 4 to 5 to 6, which seems perfectly fair. That you only benefited from v5 for a couple months is the result of your decision to wait on that upgrade for so long.
burypromote

Ozron replied on 26 Apr 2012
Robotank, that's your opinion, which is fine. The single reason I'm keen to upgrade to v6 is queued transfers. I am more pi$$ed off that Cocoatech didn't bother to let me know the new version was even out and there was a discounted upgrade fee of $15.

And BTW I had assumed the upgrade fee from V4 to V6 was also $20. My bad...

Update: Just tried the upgrade thing within V6 again, and this time it popped up with a note that I was eligible for a free update. I entered my email addy and will wait up to a week for the new code. Many thanks for this Cocoatech, I'm a very happy customer again!

BTW it also seems to still be offering the early bird discount upgrade offer of $15, so grab it while it's still there if you're thinking of upgrading.

I wish it would properly update the view when files get changed/deleted/moved. Often a restart of PathFinder is necessary. Nasty bug, has existed for a long time. They even have something in their bug ticker matching this, but that bug is set to "fixed". Maybe they should consider re-opening it. I assume this is the same issue: http://feedback.cocoatech.com/forums/275-general/suggestions/87196-improve-file-list-and-icon-refreshing

This is not necessarily the program's trouble- it is my own. I am thinking of purchasing Pathfinder (it is on sale elsewhere for the next few days.) However, I am not sure why I would do so, except for it's excellent reputation. I use the excellent Default Folder to place files where I want them. I use EagleFiler or iDocument to organize them (based on need). Keep a pretty clean download folder. Have DeltaWalker to do folder comparison. So, I'm just curious if I'm missing something by not purchasing Pathfinder. I'm not a power user- just a normal, somewhat knowledge user who does not program or do graphic work. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am having serious trouble with the keyboard navigation. Sometimes, when in Column View, hitting a series of keys just moves the selection to a folder/file starting by those letters. Some other times it jumps to the next column and selects something there. Please tell me if I am doing something wrong. Things kinda improved when I disabled the "Smart Sorting" option, but still don't get this fast Finder way to get to where you want.
