File Buddy is a popular and powerful file utility for getting info, finding files, making aliases, freeing your disk of unused files and much more.
What's New
Version 9.0.2:
  • Find history strings were missing for no creation, modified, or accessed date. Fixed.
  • File Buddy's contextual menu was not adding any items when using the German localization. Fixed.
  • The Replace Regexp option in the Rename window had a bug that could cause a crash or incorrect results in some cases. Fixed.
  • The code that validates serial numbers had a bug in it that would prevent it from accepting serial numbers if the name contained non-ASCII characters. Fixed.
  • When drawing a badged icon (icons for aliases and locked items) in the List window, the icon would be corrupted or File Buddy would crash in Leopard. After much investigation, it seems to be a bug in Leopard. Workaround found.
  • When setting labels using the Label contextual menu in the List window, setting the label to the first label (the red label) had no effect. Fixed.

I've purchased FileBuddy in 2001 and have been bvery happy with it since then so I was desperate when I saw skytag could be out of business. Happy to see Larry is back and I am understanding of personal problems, if any. It would definitely need an update. Since leoplard it started crashing very often when given a "find" command.
Anyone knows of alternatives?

I'm happy it works for some people who like the window thing. The contextual menu does not work at all, rendering this app useless because most of its ease and functionality was contained in the CM. And FYI, you don't just "have some problems with your provider" when it comes to websites not being up...we're not talking about a little while here, we're talking about NOT BEING A FUNCTIONAL DEVELOPER FOR YEARS, so whoever talked to the dev...the dev fed you a line and has his own life problems (obviously) and appears to be lying to the whole community. Shades of Stryder Software...the app hasn't been updated in years and doesn't fully work...find something else to use...it was great in its time but that time is long gone. And like Stryder did...you MIGHT get a working version again in like...10 years??

As of today, skytag.com is mostly up and running (http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.skytag.com). The report does indicate a change of host.

I finally received a reply from Kagi a few weeks ago. They said they would investigate why there is still a store front for SkyTag/FileBuddy on Kagi.com. As of today, they have not followed up with me and the store page is still online.

I'm disappointed in all the parties involved.

But I am grateful that FileBuddy still works (95% functionality, I'd say) in OSX 10.7. I've posted a message indicating as much in the database at the very useful roaringapps.com.

I just got off the phone with Larry, the developer of File Buddy. He told me that:
#1: He's definitely still in business, and
#2: He's had problems with his web & mail hosting company, and is moving to a new one, and
#3: His website should be back up by Monday.

I think that "developpers" who just disappear without a bye your leave or "sorry but i'm shutting up shop" are a disgrace to the app developer community. I would boycot any future offerings from Larry no matter how good they were.

Please be advised that when I checked today, neither "skytag.com" nor "filebuddy.com" exist as registered domains. At this time there seems to be no way to receive a serial number nor any other form of support.

With some Googling, I was able to find this storefront (http://store.kagi.com/cgi-bin/store.cgi?storeID=FB_LIVE&&). However, the fact that the SkyTag link at the top of the page links back to a page that doesn't exist is disconcerting.

It looks like Larry of SkyTag finally gave up on updating this wonderful utility. It's frustrating when developers can't even be bothered to notify licensed users and the general public that they have moved on. This same kind of silent disappearing act recently happened with Gaga Factory as well (makers of internet radio recorder Radio Gaga) and I find it very frustrating. I've been using File Buddy for as long as I can remember (and I've been a Mac user for nearly 20 years). This is truly one of the best utilities that has ever existed on the platform and its demise is a sad turn of events. The only bright spot is that it still appears to work in osx10.7.

Given his outstanding reputation for being responsive to his customers, I can only assume that some personal problem, such as a chronically ill family member, would cause him to disappear so abruptly. I wish Larry the best and hope he can resolve things soon so as to at least license the code so someone can keep it up-to-date with changes in Mac OS.

I am very disappointed in Kaji. I contacted them two weeks ago, asking "Why do you still have a sale page for File Buddy and what is the status of the developer and the product?" They have not responded. They can't be bothered to investigate this matter? Do they think it's just fine to keep a page open where someone can pay money for a product that doesn't exist anymore?

I just did whois lookups on both domains; both are, in fact currently registered. skytag.com doesn't expire until 2012-08-07, and filebuddy.com expires 2012-07-22.

Finally I bought a new FB9 licenceafter my last try to upgrade ended in no regnumber recieved and money back from PayPal/Kagi.
Recieved my new regno after a few days.

I've used FB very long and its the best and most useful app ever and can do lots of things no other app can.

I can confirm it will not start in Lion, but I have made a simple fix.
After reg Finder sayes "fbhelper is a powerPC app..." when you try to start.
Use Finder contextmenu on FB9 to show package contents and go to folder /Contents/Resources/and delete "fbhelper".
Viola ... at next start your up!

I use a PowerBool Pro mid 2010 and MacOS 10.7.1

Is FB9 working well under Lion? Now that you've had it up and running for a while, I'd be interested in your experience before I re-purchase FB9 or upgrade to Lion

I havn't used all possibul functions, but all I've used (list windows and connected functions, forced delete etc) has worked perfect. Never any crashes at all. But contextmenu is absent I believe.

I did never get any upgrade when I tried this but got my money back through PayPal+Kagi then.
Therefore I bought a completely new license that worked well and I recieved a new license number.
But I don't know if this works any more - see postings above!

FB is a true Swiss Army Knife and I feel naked without it!

Yes. But I got a reply from the developer finally. He did not give me a new Reg Code but said it would work on my Macs.It only worked on one. My iMac. Bt on my MacBook Pro I have to keep putting it in and the about box says the Reg Code but the app says it is too old.

Same here - had to replace logic board and HD on my laptop - now my serial number is not accepted. I have to re-enter name/serial # every time I fire up FB9. I have emailed on several occasions and have had no response. Has the dev stopped supporting this software? Is anyone there?

Eric try this. Download the new version and put in your reg code. The developer said in his email to me that it should work on the new version. As I said earlier I had no success on my Mac Book Pro but it might work for you.

Hey JazzGuy - many thanks - I deleted the current installation using AppDelete, including all preferences, Library/Application Support files etc etc and re-installed same version (9.0.2) and all was ok - I didn't have to provide my serial number, so presumably AppDelete didn't find the secret invisible file that keeps my serial #!
many thanks for the suggestion - hope this helps someone else as well

Over the years this has been one of the most valuable and best written tools out there. If anything, for its ability to find/fix broken aliases. I use Terminal for most other stuff, but I still come back to File Buddy...it's a real winner, has been for many years.

Harv had trouble on 26 Sep 2009
On a 24" Intel C2D iMac, 10.6.1

Nearly every time I launch FB, I get the advisory that I must enter my serial number. This occurs so often (about 90% of the time) that I now keep an alias of the File Buddy.fbAutoReg on my desktop.

I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the same problem and if there is a fix.

I just wrote the developer. Should I get a response, I'll post the relevant details.

In desperation, I deleted my Skytag plists. I then reentered my original serial number. For the time being, that seemed to fix things. Perhaps my “fix” will work for you too (still, a verified backup is suggested).

I'm using beta 15 and if i save prefs with the "Allow access to administrator mode" box checked, it asks for my password, as it should.

However, after i've done so, the prefs are still unsaved. When i click save, it again asks for my password, and so on, endlessly.

If i choose the "Enable Administrator Mode" menu, it also asks for a password, and when i've entered it, the menu item remains "Enable Administrator Mode".

So how does one *actually* get administrator mode activated?
