We have had nothing but problems with WebSTAR V.4. The WSWebstarPrefs.xml file corrupts easily - about 1 out of every 8 connections via the admin client. Today, the server has been down for 4 hours, after I added a new SSL config. Our prefs file is huge, and rebuilding it takes hours. We have moved 95% of our clients to Apache. The remaining sites are on their way. I'll never look back. WebSTAR V has been a nightmare. Like others, I find the "support" from 4D to be nonexistent, and in fact we have one ticket that they never even resolved for us -- and that was with a PAID 12-month service contract!

Do yourself a huge favor and take on Apache with iTools for configuration. If only I had known that 3 years ago...

We have been using WebSTAR for over 6 years and do not see the issues others have had. We use WebSTAR for the web server only and have been very pleased with its performance, its stability and especially its security. WebSTAR V has a Java based GUI to allow Windows administrators control the server. Java for interfaces is always clunky and unfortunately the 4D engineers are subjected to such restrictions for the benefit of allowing Windows admins in enterprise markets. Our main server takes 3.2 to 5.5 million hits per day and ships out a terabyte of data a month without breaking a sweat with WebSTAR. Lab testing showed us that WebSTAR significantly outperforms Apache and as far as a security history, it is the most secure web server in the world. For one of our clients (a hotter site than SlashDot) security is paramount and thus there is no other choice on *any* platform. Do not hesitate recommending this product as the best web server available in any market.

Doesn't quite live up to its reputation of ease of use. When it breaks, the support documentation on the web is completely INADEQUATE. You're forced to call 4D for help. BTW, they go on vacation - the whole damn company - for the last two weeks of the year.

5.3.1 has bugs. 5.3.2 doesn't fix them.

And what about the mail server?
Man! We bought 4D WebSTAR just because we needed a new mail server so we went looking for sonething easier to config than POSTFIX but with the same functions (SPAM rules, blaklists and mainly virus scanning).
Well this .. thing just hangs with the virus scanner functions hogging our dual CPU G4. Some days i need to reboot the server twice!!!
The fix?? (from the tech suport) Easy! Turn off the virus scanning function. Great!
I'm going to ask for my money back and I'm going to give a 2nd try to postfix. Suddenly it done's lok so scary any longer.

We have been using Webstar since it was HTTP Server v1.0 The MacOS X version is the worst version that we have seen although it slowly does seem to be getting better with each release. The interface is much less intuitive that with MacOS9 version and the PDF serving is worse than useless (you need to use Apache). Logs are not as nice. Support in the UK is completely non existant and I am even a 4D partner! Would I swop to Apache? Well it's better the devil you know.

WebSTAR for OS X is the buggiest and least stable program I have ever used. If our company hadn't dedicated ourselves to WebSTAR, we would definately have switched to another server software.

The server software goes deaf, freezes at random, fails to startup requiring a complete re-install (and eliminating the email boxes and email within), and more!

Save yourself some time and avoid this program. ANYTHING else is better.
