MacGhostView overview

MacGhostView is a application for previewing Postscript and encapsulated Postscript files and converting them to other formats. It implements the command line tools gv (ghostview 3.7.2) and gs (ghostscript 9.18). Multiple files can be previewed at the same time, each one displayed in its own gv window. Unlike Apple's Preview program, MacGhostView does not convert Postscript files to PDF format and then display the PDF file.

Nice to see this still being maintained. I find it indispensible for EPS file production for my reports.

The included macps2pdf is extremely useful: converts ps->eps, fixes eps, does other conversions (handy for TeX, etc). The author gave me an unlock code, after I paid my shareware fee, in 2003 and it still works, two full versions later! PS Viewing is immediate, unlike Preview and Xwin, and zooms in on parts of the figure with a click of the mouse. For my work, the package has been indispensable.

I don't see the advantage of this over the "gv" ports in Darwinports and Fink, which work great and are free.

If you don't need the Postscript stuff, you might want to take a look at PDFpen before buying this. It is done by the same people who did PageSender, that brilliant piece of Fax software that finally brought a supported working Fax product to Mac OS X - until Panther came out and stole some of its thunder. For a few dollars more ($30), it not only does what this, Preview and Acrobat does, but allows you to insert text into PDF files, such as to fill out forms. That IS something none of the rest do.

It is quite similar to the ghostview program found on Unix BUT IT IS NOT FREE. Anyway why use this paying and slow application when Apple Preview works faster and Acrobat Reader is free? POINTLESS

I would buy this product, if it could open multiple .ps files at once (like MacGSview)

Wouhou! This version solves the nasty bug that transforms quotation marks into two commas when you use Times New Roman font in your postscript file.

I just tried out MacGhostView 2.7 for OS X. Sorry to say it is very slow - not really useful for large ps graphic outputs from scientific computations (with scores of frames). Would be OK for an occasional look at small ps files I suppose. Really needs an order of magnitude boost in speed. GUI for controls would also be nice - like the real UNIX ghostview.

Slow, antique non-standard interface but it does the job.

I don't understand the anonymous attacks either, and I also don't understand why you wouldn't want it for OS-X. This code works great.

What is this anonymous attack on this great program based on? I agree with reviewer James Pauls. I don't use it every day, and it's not superfast, but it works great, never crashes, what do you want?

Don't know what the last review was talking about -- perhaps he/she will clarify the reasons for trashing this program. I've been using this MacGhostView for months under MacOS 9.1 and now X, and it's a lifesaver. If you need documents that the creator makes available for download in PostScript only, and you want to view the docs onscreen instead of printing them, I don't know of any choices except buying Adobe software (very powerful but expensive), or converting the PS files into PDF with this much cheaper, yet very effective program. I for one am very glad I bought this product, and I use it almost daily.
