WordPress.com overview

WordPress.com is a desktop app that gives your blog a permanent home in your dock.

Features:
  • Focus on your content - Write and design with no other browser tabs to distract you. Switch easily between managing your WordPress sites and your favorite desktop apps.
  • Speed is a feature - The desktop app builds upon the already fast WordPress.com by bundling the entire site as a local copy. You get near-instant page-loads and less waiting around.
  • Not one size fits all - The WordPress.com desktop app will scale to any size. Do you need a small window on the side to keep your eye on notifications, or do want to expand to a truly full screen for a zen writing experience? Take your pick.

AFAIU the difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com, the latter is a company making money out of a free product (the .org one). Using the same name is very confusing (and probably on purpose)... On the positive side, they offer hosting service for the basic plan, but many are cheaper. Hopefully, their support is worth those 50 bucks a year. ;-)

Reminder: Keep WordPress AND the plugins you use UP-TO-DATE! They are almost constantly being found to have security flaws. - - EXAMPLE: "Hackers are exploiting a critical flaw affecting >350,000 WordPress sites. Flaw is in *File Manager*, a plugin with more than 700,000 users; 52% are affected." - - https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/09/hackers-are-exploiting-a-critical-flaw-affecting-350000-wordpress-sites/

Didn't find the free version to try it out. Sorry I bought it. I started making a website and came to a grinding halt when I couldn't find fonts. I couldn't even persuade my cursor to open Help. I was using Karelia Sandvox, developed for macs which I used for two websites. Brilliant programme with an instruction video to start with. But their customer service has disappeared. Wordpress doesn't have an instruction video. A chat session is available for an extra $66 US. I cancelled my subscription.

I never published my Wordpress site & so maybe that disqualifies me from commenting?

I read books on WP & dove in, had used other tools to build a website in the past, but frankly there was no "warm & fuzzy” confidence that I would have a proper complete & secure website (such as they are to varying degrees these days) when I got done.

I didn’t want to get caught up from a passing knowledge of html 4 to html 5 & insufficient grasp of CSS.

I would recommend building a representative dummy site first, to get the lay of the land, if you are less than qualified developer.

There is a free (and not entirely free version) tool called MAMP to build a site locally in a folder on your computer, rather than push the site to a server to view the progress of your project.

The hosting options, between a pay version & a one domain stripped down freebie (.org & .com) should be considered when committing to build a site, if its a hobby site for yourself.

A solid desktop application for publishing on both self-hosted WordPress(.org) and WordPress.com sites and managing most aspects of them as well. The whole app is fast, responsive to any window size you want, open source, and it brings real-time notifications and offline editing to your WordPress experience. The editor itself is minimal yet features everything I need about 98% of the time, with the ability to edit the HTML directly for the other 2%.

This is the best desktop based applications I have ever used. Along with thousands of plugins and themes, it provides me all the necessary features which I missed in other platforms especially Tumblr, Blogger etc.

This is actually a nice application. This DESKTOP app allows you to create and edit posts in a DESKTOP environment instead of online environment. One of the problems that I've had with my WordPress sites is that it's sometimes awkward to add images to a post because of the processing time of your WordPress host and web browser. Adding images was so much faster from my desktop. And then everything uploaded all at once (probably using ftp instead of http). There are still a lot of functions that direct you to your browser (e.g., plugins), but for editing posts, this is way better than most blogging text editors I've used. One problem I see is that I can only edit posts that I own. On one site, I'm an editor, but not owner, and I am not able to add posts to that page. Looking forward to more...

If you JUST want to build a website WordPress in itself is absolutely fantastic. However, many people who want a (WordPress) website really want a web business (get lots of traffic, make money with the site, etc). While putting up a (WordPress) site is easy, knowing how to build an online business is another story. The real truth is that many people struggle to build a successful online business with WordPress. They keep changing or adding plugins, themes and other features hoping it will solve their problem. Yet Wordpress "as is" won't build an online business. It's missing a do-able start-to-finish BUSINESS process. Surely, you can slog through the mountains of business building advice and tools that are out there. But for most WordPress users it all ends up being too much. So, despite the dazzling display of Wordpress features, the reality for most (non-tech) people who want to create a web business with Wordpress is that they need to adhere to an easy-to-follow, all-in-one, proven, ethical webbusiness-building system (not a get rich quick scheme), tailored to the WordPress platform, to get (1) a significant amount of traffic and get (2) targeted traffic (example of such a system: WealthPrinciples dot net). Otherwise... you'll end up having (and building) only a WordPress webSITE (or BLOG) but not a webBUSINESS.
