The original Popcorn Time was (Open Source) a service/app which shared his code to the developers community. It ended last March. But the code was free to use to continue do develop Popcorn Time.

There are, at this time, at least (that I know of), two groups of developers doing that job in a more complete way:

> http://get-popcorn.com:
They are Opensource from the beginning. They share there code openly in Github (https://github.com/popcorn-official). And anyone is free to contribute or to propose and discuss new features, etc (http://discuss.get-popcorn.com).

They're keeping their code closed, although in their site they say that the'll be publishing the code on Github.

Both websites are identical. Only difference is that one gives 2.9 for download and the other 3.1

Well, there seems to be some explanation of this situation here:
http://popcorntimewar.com (just read the links at the end of this link)

As a summary:
It seems that http://get-popcorn.com is the real team of developers working on this great app. Just download the app from http://get-popcorn.com

It seems the PopcornTime app from http://time4popcorn.eu, the one on this page of Macupdate, is NOT what I would call a trusted source.

I'm confused. There are already developers that make the "official" version of Popcorn Time: http://get-popcorn.com

Is this the same one?

Why don't join forces and resources? Or change the name (slightly) and change the site.

This is to confusing for the user.

There is also a version, Popcorn Time(0.2.9) which is fit for (Snow)Leopard. Google and you'll find it!
There is also a similar program, the same loos etc, which is called "Binge Time alpha", which is for series. Use Google and you 'll find it!

That's fine. But "Binge Time alpha" at least has a different name.

What I'm trying to say is that this (http://time4popcorn.eu) and this one (http://get-popcorn.com) have exactly the same website appearance (almost), and If you download both apps, you'll end up with two apps with the same exact name and icon on your Mac.
I could choose to download only one of them, but both are in different stages of development, different features, UI design, etc.

Why not join forces and resources? Or, if that's not possible at all due to some reason (?), get to an agreement to differentiate between the two apps/names/websites? For the sake of the end user.

The way it is now is so confusing for the user. And it hurts the community and the app credibility .

It looks like a "War of Popcorn Time" HBO latest series (you can already stream it in Popcorn Time, but which PopcornTime do you choose? ;-)

You are right: it is confusing. But isn't that the consequence of the fact that the developers are developing these fantastic programs secretly? Because one can argue if it is legal or not. I know that the first developer seems to be an Argentinian, but stopped with it, and somebody else(where?!) started to continue. A non-profit group open source group, perhaps spread allover the world. If something works, it works!

There's no secret in these. They are doing nothing ilegal. The original code was Open. It's sad to see this kind of competition with 2 websites, names and icons exactly the same. I don't know what's going on.
