I used to use online service to download YouTube videos. But, most of them, if not all, are so cumbersome to use and the features are pretty much limited. And of course, with lots of advertisements.

Until one day I found this app by accident through blogwalking and then google brought me here. I thought this app would be useless and looking it at the price, it seems ridiculous to spend such amount of money for a downloader app on a free video service. However, I gave it a try just for my curiousity. I downloaded the trial version.

To my surprise, I like this simple app. I simply throw as many video links as I wanted into it and it downloads them all in background. So I can forget about it to continue browsing the internet without worrying I close my Safari by accident. You know, the Cmd+Q reflex muscle memory.

Experiencing such enjoyment, I thought I need to purchase the full version. And then I got a luck, somehow I got a discount so I could get this app for much less price. Thank you, Eltime Software.

And I also love the ability to download the audio part of YouTube video as mp3 file. I love watching music video clips, but sometimes I just want to listen to the music. Especially if I'm considering to buy the full album through iTunes.

Conclusion... this app just works! No hassle, no fuss, no ads.

I rarely write a review, for anything, especially software. Even if I purchase it. Unless it really impresses me. I give a review as a reward for the hard work. And here is one goes for Airy for Mac as it deserves one. I hope it says it all.

One more thing... I only gave 4 stars for Features because I demand the ability to download from other online video service, especially Vimeo. So I could download them all from a single app. Give me that and I'll give this app full 5 stars.

Thank you.

Airy is a small, quick, easy to use app for downloading videos from YouTube. I find it’s uncluttered interface and simple activation make it a snap for my needs. I primarily download how-to videos for Adobe products and photography techniques, which can be large files and need to be clearly visible on-screen to be helpful. Airy handles them like a breeze.

After installation and initial launch of the app, you can add an Airy button to your browser by selecting Airy > Integrate into Browser (I don’t recall if this is an option during installation, but no matter, since you can add it later). This takes you to a local web page from where you drag a bookmark into your browser’s Favorites Bar. In Safari, the bookmark retained the name “Open in Airy” but in Firefox, it had a javascript name, so I had to rename it (via Properties pop-up).

To use Airy, point your browser to a YouTube video and click once on the Open in Airy button. Airy launches and recognizes the video. Select a resolution from the popup menu, then click the Download button. Note that the maximum resolution is only as high as the video’s owner and/or YouTube have provided. I’m looking at a video right now that Airy can save at resolutions up to 1080p, thanks to the original poster providing hi-res versions. Airy downloads the file even as I am watching it in my browser. When done, I can watch the downloaded video anytime I want.

I have used other video downloaders, free and fee, and I find Airy to be the simplest to use. I see that some reviewers balk at paying around $20 for such a product. My reply is that you get what you pay for. Paying a reputable company like Eltima, maker of the Eltima Player that I’ve been using for many years, ensures that they will continue to upgrade and support the product. Airy is a very nice product. Give it a trial run and see if you agree.

Airy does a good job of what it advertises, but there are many many many solutions that do the same job for free. Further more those alternatives are often scripts for browsers or websites, so you dont have to install a seperate application for the job.

I know that people today aren't willing to pay a lot for apps anymore, but $20 for a single purpose application, for which free alternatives are available and that pretty much just grabs a file link out of the website's source code is WAY too much.

if the developer wants to give this app any reason of existence, he should add other websites like Vimeo to it and make it a menubar application, where you just have to enter the link. maybe even let it automatically open when a video link is in your clipboard. also he should charge a price of $2-$5, which would be fair if all of those features are added.

For stability i give 4.5 stars as it hasnt chrashed on me, since i started using it a short time ago.
1 star for value, as this is close to a rip off.
4 for ease of use as this is a super simple application, but the fact that i even have to open it makes it lose 1 star
2 for features because only YouTube is supported, but at least in different resolutions.
and also 2 overall as i dont think it deserves anything higher than that right now.

The app works as advertised without any issues. We inform our visitors about its price. You are welcome to use free alternatives. But it does not mean that Airy deserves 2 stars rating.

well im sorry sir or madam, but i just have to disagree with your opinion.

judging and rating an app also means looking at the competition out there. and fact is that many alternatives do the same job for free. not only that: i have a script that makes a download button appear on the youtube website, which means that it does the job faster and i dont have to install a seperate app for it.

concerning pricing, usability and workflow this script is superior of what you re offering. the only way you can use your standalone app as an advantage is embedding other websites as well, just as i said in my original review.

but even other standalone apps that are available through the mac app store cost less and do more, so just how do you justify the price?

i continue to believe this app deserves two stars as it works as advertised and runs stable, but in comparison to pretty much everything else on the market its just no competition. and im not saying this to offend, but in hopes that you take my advise and add other streaming services.

i like your simple interface but, that doesnt mean it cant be powerful.

I have used a number of apps and plugins for downloading YoutTube videos on both Windows and Mac. Airy is user friendly, intuitive and most importantly very stable. I was also really impressed with the service specialist from the support team that responded to my query instantly and provided all the assistance I needed. I would recommend Airy to any friend or colleague.

Apparently it doesn't let you download clips at 1080p or at their original resolution when those are available on Youtube.
Airy only goes up to 720p.
Already e-mailed the developer's support about this but haven't received any reply. Without Full HD support it doesn't worth much.

MEB, the developer has contacted us, asking that we post the following as a reply to you (until they can apply for a developer app association)….

"I can't check whether we have replied you as I don't have your e-mail. But concerning your issue I can say that that Airy downloads only the entire media containers whilst YouTube sometimes splits them into separate audio or/and video tracks (shown as 1080p)."

@ Jess (MacUpdate) Thank you for keeping me updated on this.
Meanwhile i have received a reply from Eltima Software support that says basically the same and that they have forwarded this request (full hd downloads) to the development team.

Just want to make clear that i like the software, it's as simple as it can be. I found it very reliable and straightforward. My only problem is that i've bought it to download hd movies (mostly tutorials and some reference material where the resolution is important to clearly see the interface of the software being explained etc) and there's nothing on Eltima site stating that Airy is unable to download all available resolutions. I assumed it was able to do that.

That's the only reason i've gave it a three star rating. I can't justify the money spent on it, if i'm unable to do what i intended.

I hope they can improve Airy and support all resolutions available on Youtube. Only then i can say that it's well spent money.

I have tried 4 YouTube downloaders and can't download anything higher than 720p. YouTube changed something.

I have tried airy for a shot period, it is impressive.

Simple but powerful, you can choose video resolution as well as format to fit your smart phone. Simultaneous downloads are supported.

Convenient, airy is integrated with safari, so you can use it by just one click. After downloading the videos, airy can be used to play them.

One last thing, the great app is now on sale.

Practical. Simple. Intuitive. Great.

Able to choose the resolution of the videos available, makes the Airy a competitor to the height of most traditional applications of the genre!

A great app!

Simple and convenient. In the browser a bookmarklet is used to initiate the YouTube download and it's passed to Airy, then it's just a question of selecting either video or audio-only formats from a drop down menu and hit the 'download' button. Simultaneous downloads are possible and appear in the app window.

Best of all, the file is named according to the title on YT and not as some obscure url as is the case with other downloaders ...making multiple downloads easier to identify later on.

Thoroughly recommended.
