Mac Backup Guru overview

Mac Backup Guru lets you copy and paste a bootable volume in the Finder, or make incremental snapshots. It is the only software which has the ease-of-use to allow you to copy and paste anything - even a bootable volume - using the contextual menu in the Finder (OS X 10.10 Yosemite and later only). It is also the only 3rd-party software which can make incremental snapshots of your disk, which creates daily copies of your startup disk on an external disk and allows you to go back to prior versions of documents or deleted documents. And it does this while using very little space. You can literally store 30 apparent bootable copies of your 1TB startup disk on a 1.5TB backup disk. Apart from that it has all the standard backup software features, such as scheduled backups which activate when you connect your backup disk (so backing up becomes a matter of simply connecting your disk and everything happens safely and automatically), and it wraps it all up in a ridiculously easy-to-use user interface.

It's great for backups, but you can't use the "boot from external hard drive" feature on any Mac OS newer than the one you backed up. This is very frustrating since my work computer is much older than my home computer. It means I can't use the Backup Guru disk as a work-at-home option, except to get files and folders off of it. Is there any way to fix this?

Excellent app, at a great price. Was a long time user of CCC but the price is now too high and it seems bloated. The scheduling is good, but I'd like to see a separate pane so multiple schedules can be set and activated independently. Notification Centre integration could then remind me to plug the relevant (weekly/ monthly) backup disk in, to perform the scheduled backup... Here's hoping!

I have been using Backup Guru LE for some months in order to back up the folders and files on my Server (14 years of office history). However, I found it was not doing exactly what I thought to was doing, so I decided to purchase 'Mac Backup Guru', which promises to do more. However, when I tried it out it allows me to use it, but there is a little annoying pop-up asking me to purchase it. How can this be if I already paid for it? How can I make the software understand it is already paid for?

Your website macdaddy.io is not working, so I cannot contact you, except on this web site?! I want to replace my imac Fusion disk with SSD, I have several incremental snapshots... is this ok? Or I should make new synchronized clone backup? If I use SSD that have incremental backups - how can I delete old snapshots? Will I have a problem upgrading OS or using that SSD as system disk? Also, does the BackupGuru create bootsector/partition info, so that destination disk can be used as internal system disk?

Time Machine does incremental backups. Of course there's no customization available, but that's not a real loss. There are third-party apps that enable you to tweak Time Machine, like Backup Scheduler, if you want to vary backup intervals. And BackupLoupe does much more. As for copying and pasting volumes from the Finder, the Finder is notoriously unreliable for large copies. Nor would I care to tie up the Finder with such a project. SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner are separate apps that don't impact the Finder. I've been using both for years (I recommend SuperDuper to friends because it's easier to use and requires only a minimum of explanation. That said, if this app works for you that's just fine. And it does a lot for the money so it's a decent value.

I purchased this app because I was looking for a very user-friendly rsync-based GUI app. At first, it seemed to work as advertised and even more... until I realized that MBG was doing some weird stuff with my mounted volumes; particularly, my local Time Machine snapshots. Basically, MBG was running itself at god-knows-when intervals—though I never found any logs to back this up. After I uninstalled MBG, these bugs stopped happening.

Works well, but if you are looking to backup individual files/folders, then this is not the app for you.

I used to be a great fan of Backup Guru. Incremental snapshots with hard links - ingenious! Since macOS High Sierra, though, Backup Guru launches two processes "Backup Guru Helper" which drain my Macbook Pro battery within two hours or so! I had to stop them with "launchctl remove io.macdaddy.Backup-Guru-Helper". I contacted the developer twice but got no answer at all.

I use the free version, Backup Guru LE. It is easy to use, without useless features, does what it says, and does it superbly.

I have been a long time user of SuperDuper! and also recent started using the paid version of Carbon Copy Cloner. Mac Backup Guru is a welcome addition to these two. It's "claim to fame" is the "incremental snapshot," which uses the same "magic" as Time Machine (hard links) to create what is in essence "time stamped" backups (bootable as well as chosen folders/files). Neither SuperDuper nor CCC can do this. Mac Backup Guru takes longer to make a complete backup (clone) than either CCC or SD, in my experience. Support is also limited. The User Guide, such as it is, consists only of a (rather detailed) annotated jpg, and there is no user forum. I've emailed a couple of times to have a question answered, but no one has ever responded.
