4LightData Base is a utility database with integrated word processor, spreadsheet, and drawing. The program can handle large amounts of data using the 4D database engine. It gives access to the engine's Import, Export, Quick Report, Query, and Formula editors which allow manipulation and reporting of the records.

A very good introduction to the editors can be found in the 4D QuickStart Guide. Additionally, word processor, SVG drawing, and spreadsheet features have been added to the database. It is now possible to merge form letters, drawings, and spreadsheets with the database records.

What's New

Version 5.20140723:
  • Updated the database engine to 4D v14.2
  • Some cosmetic changes
  • Draw: Minor speed improvements in selecting and moving objects

The problems I reported with the previous version are gone. One minor annoyance is that one must push a button to do just about everything. There's no keyboard shortcut, for example, to add or delete a record. But this is minor. But I look forward to the evolution of this program. I had a lot of experience with 4D in the past, and I appreciate the effort that is going into this app. Somewhat strangely, one of the -help- links take one right to 4D documentation of doubtful relevance (the "CVG" pages.

It's "beta", but as someone else stated, really "alpha". Simple things don't work. I tried to create a table. Wrote down fields in order, but each new one went to the top of the list and re-order appears impossible. Saving the table with 3 simple fields failed for no good reason that I could see. For a free Mac relational database program with form entry, the Base program in one of the *-Office suites is the only real choice.

New fields now appear at the end of the list and a field's type is chosen from a pop-up when the Type column is clicked. If the table creation failed with an error message, it would be great to have that information.

The entry form style is new and was created to handle the picture type. The previous style only handled text. This required the ability to resize and move the form objects. Nudging and resizing fields with the keyboard and alignment still need to be implemented. Printing the form is not currently an option, but can be accomplished by merging one or more records with the word processor or draw module. 4D has a nice label editor that could be really useful, but it's unavailable to this program at present.

This looks like the start of something that could be useful. Right now it seems to have limited functionality and the documentation is weak. Right now this does not seem to be a product that will be useful to the typical user, as it requires knowledge and experience with other databases to figure out how to use it. While not immediately obvious, it is a relational db, something I did not discover until the very end of my 15 minutes of playing with it. While there is a help menu it takes you to a website that only seems to have a vague relationship to this product which it sort of treats as a front end to a full 4d database. For those unfamiliar with 4d, 4d is a high end, really expensive, complicated database for the Mac. It is the same class as Oracle. Previous comments are somewhat correct. An example is that switching out of Design Mode quits the program. While this product has promise, right now it does not seem ready for prime time. However it is a development in progress, given its beta status, which could actually be considered to be alpha by many.

Super clunky and super buggy.

I am sort of confused here. Does this require a 4D database, a quite expensive app? Is only the beta free? If so what does the stable version cost? Why doesn't the link to the developer work so that I can find out more information?

Hope this helps, 4LightData Base is a stand alone app. The first thing it will ask you to do is to create a datafile on your disk. It's primary focus is creating and reporting on tables within the datafile. A table is created using the Utilities button. After that, data can be entered either a record at at time or by importing text files.

When started from the buttons in a table's list form (Work with a Table), drawing, word processing (Write) and spreadsheet (View) modules can merge with a selection of records. Write and View are 4D plugins. The drawing module is fairly limited, but was written around satisfying the specific needs of a customer who had been depending on 4D's now extinct Draw plugin.

"Picture" is a valid field type, but there is not a way to access pictures in the user interface at this point.
Data can be exported in several standard formats. It can also be exported in a 4D format that allows the data to be imported into a programmable 4D structure.

Looking into the link to the developer problem...

Thank you for the information. It should help MacUpdate users understand its specifications quite a bit better. The only critical information missing is if the app will remain free after beta and if not, what will it cost.

The app will remain free. That's not to say it won't get a "Donation" button one day.

Thank you for this information. One of the long term weaknesses of the Mac has been the lack of an individual, affordable, general purpose relational database, that was not too constrictive, yet did not require the user to be a programmer. The closest one I know of was Bento, but it has always been too constrictive. Windows had Access, abet not very friendly, but affordable with a GUI interface that did not require a programming degree to use. Filemaker and 4D are just too expensive for the occasional individual user. That left SQL products that again required programming knowledge to use. Hopefully your product, when complete, will fill this gap.
