I love the UI. I too could just stare at it. It's also simple to use and well priced.

This is the only color schemer I can stare at.

I would have given it a try for $10, but it's $20 on the app store. I have color schemer, which does EVERYTHING - including crash, but i think i can live with that a while longer.

So are the 3 stars your review of the video? I don't think it's fair to punish developers for Apple's App Store policies, and I don't think it's fair to give a star-rating without actually using the app.

the rating was actually a mistake - i meant to post as a comment not a rated review and didn't see how to change it.

Generally I agree that the lack of a trial version is a strong disincentive and one of the major drawbacks of the Mac App Store. In this case, however, the guided tour provided on the developer's web site shows Spectrum to be, in my opinion, head and shoulders above any other color picker or schemeer I've seen - and I've been checking them out since OS 7.x. Putting my money where my mouth is, I went ahead and bought it. I think anyone with a serious interest in color will find Spectrum hard to resist.

Been using ColorSchemer Studio for quite some time and never thought I would need anything else. Well, after watching the demo video, I subsequently purchased Spectrum. After evaluating it for a few hours, it's definitely a keeper. The UI is more intuitive and easier to use than ColorSchemer Studio, just feels more organic and so far seems rock solid. I can definitely see adding this to my work flow. Feature request: Ability to rearrange palettes in the library using drag and drop.

Need demo before spending money. There are several other similar tools out there for free or relatively the same price. Without an evaluation period, there's little reason to blow $20 just to see how this app stacks up.

Currently, Apple's Mac App Store has no provisions for trials or demos. If Apple adds this feature at some point in the future, you can rest assured that a trial version of Spectrum will be available.

Usually, the next question is "why not provide a non-app-store version?" Unfortunately, maintaining two separate versions of the app is a tedious process and that time that can be better spent on improving the app.

The quick tour video on the website attempts to provide a realistic demonstration of what you can expect from the app. You can also browse through its users' manual for more details.
