Mine hangs on the splash screen, too, but I found that if you right-click on the splash screen and click "reload" then it will continue on to the application. After that, it's fine.

This application hangs at the splash screen almost every time I launch it. I can occasionally get it to launch by disabling my wireless connection first... but mostly not. Tried all the standard foolishness WRT preferences, reinstalling, permissions, etc.

Running 10.8.2

From Barnes and Noble:
Currently, selling books in digital format to international customers involves international copyright laws, tariffs, VAT taxes, currency conversions, etc., only US and Canadian residents are able to purchase NOOK Books on the Barnes & Noble website at this time and must have a US billing address and a valid US issued credit card.

So Nook is a total no go for anyone outside that USA - Canada area - THE REST OF THE WORLD.

Amazon and Apple don't seem to have this problem. Poor old B&N - still living in the last century.

Why do they sell the Nook around the world only to then disappoint all of their customers (other than the USA & Canada).

I bought a Kindle and downloaded two books in a matter of minutes from setting up an account - perfect, seamless and smooth - Go amazon and Kindle. Nook is crippled by B&N. Totally useless.

Amazon is only a little better. I discovered that the add two dollars to each purchase if I use my credit card that is issued from a non-US bank. This means that non-US citizens or expatriates overseas are charged more simply because Amazon can get away with it.

As an e-book reader, this is actually quite a nice program, handsomely mimicking a good dedicated e-reading device.

The problem with it, though, is if you, like me, expected a program called "Nook" to actually synchronize content and notes/bookmarks with your Barnes &Noble Nook device. And you couldn't be blamed for thinking that, because this is precisely what the PC version of the program does.

But no, the Mac version has no awareness of a connected Nook device, nor will it share e-books, shelves, or notes from your Mac.

This reminds me of The Bad Old Days, when Macs were obscure and unsupported, but these days, I would have expected more from a large retailer like B&N.

HI Hamishmacdonald, I don't have a Nook so I can't test, but according to the description and the B&N site the app certainly should synchronize content between devices "Automatically sync your last page, bookmarks, and notes to other devices". You may want to reach out to their support.

Thanks for your reply, Ryan. I was unclear about one thing in my review, the syncing of notes and bookmarks: the official Nook app *will* do that — but only for books purchased from B&N, not for ePubs or PDFs "side loaded" onto the device (which appears as a volume when connected by USB cable).

But there's no mention on the Mac software page of syncing books themselves, and there's some consternation on B&N's support boards about this feature being quietly omitted from this client.

This is discussed on NookBoards.com:

There's a second B&N software product called Nook Study that sounds as if it does some syncing, but I can't run it because I'm not in the States.

Bah! Oh well, Calibre does the job (in its own ugly way).
