another TROUBLESHOOTING:

In Mavericks (maybe earlier too) PW Gorilla crashes when changing the display font size. If you encounter this issue, avoid changing it via preferences menu: unsaved changes to preferenes will be lost.

Adjusting font size manually:
- go to folder ~/Library/Preferences (user's library!)
- open file "gorilla.rc" in a low-level text editor (like TextWrangler)
- change the line "fontsize=10" to the desired size
- save the file and restart gorilla

By the way - the developer fixed permissions and autosave shortly after my comment here in march, 2013!

TROUBLESHOOTING:
If the application appears to be damaged or does not start on every user account, then log in as administrator, launch terminal and repair its permissions:

1. type (without quotes):
"sudo chmod -R 755 "
2. drag the application onto the Terminal window,
3. hit Return and enter your admin password.

IMPROVEMENT:
If you create a new login and PWG locks the window before you saved the login, your new account data will be lost without warning if you quit the application from the lock window.
This happened to me a few times.

Best solution: PWG should save new logins before locking (at least if the corresponding preference is selected!!!). Alternatively, the "quit" button could be disabled or a warning could pop up.

These two issues are fixed in release 1.5.3.7

NOTE: *ONLY* STUFFIT EXPANDER seems to expand the .zip archive without damaging it. The Unarchiver, Keka and Archive Utility all result in damaged files.

PWGorilla was compressed on 32bit SL 10.6.2 machine with the system's zip utility and decompressed by double-click, too. Perhaps this is causing the problem? Which error message do you get during un-zipping?

But some friends tested it with ML 10.8.2 and had no problems. Which OSX are you using?

Umaromc
+0

I don't get errors unzipping. I ran the Zip file through those three programs a couple of times and all, save for StuffIt Expander, produced damaged files. The error is reported by the OS, stating said program is "damaged or missing files."

MacPro 2009 10.8.3

Well, I could not find infos about the zip issue in the net. ML 10.8.3 is too new ...

At first we will check the zip integrity and compatibility:

Could you go into the Terminal and try:

zip -T gorilla1573.zip

If you get an "OK" then the compression is integer and you can unzip it in the Terminal with

unzip gorilla1573.zip -d my-favorite-dir

Then you can launch the program with

open "Password Gorilla.app"

A second step would be to use the native built-in "uncompress" utility which uses the programm "ditto"

ditto -x -k -V gorilla1537.zip Destination_Dir

If this works the zip issue is problably caused by some internal change in Apple's new Mountain Lion 10.8.3 (Assuming you did not have this issue with previous versions of OSX and PWGorilla).

zip -v

would show us which version ML 10.8.3 is using. I had on my Linux system problems with the zip format, too. Using the program 7z solved them.

Unfortunately I have just the old Snow Leopard so I am reliant on your feedback.

cd /Users/username/Downloads
zip -T gorilla1573.zip

>>> Copying gorilla1537.zip

copying file Password Gorilla.app/Contents/Resources/Gorilla.icns ...
1047470 bytes for Password Gorilla.app/Contents/Resources/Gorilla.icns

NOTE: The above STILL creates a "damaged or missing files" app.

Ok, the zip file seems to be damaged.

Try:

shasum gorilla1537.zip

and compare the result with the correct checksum:

0f90a67da42db422eac84da9cd6352a191f0138f gorilla1537.zip

If the checksum does not match then your download is broken.

I would suggest to continue this issue on:

https://github.com/zdia/gorilla/issues

This board is not very comfortable to handle and the Github site is the developer site.

To sum up the facts:

- the zipball is downloaded in correct size
- using native zip command fails on 10.8.3
- zip version is 3.0, compilation options are equal in 10.6.2
- zip 3.0 on 10.6.2 is:
Compiled with gcc 4.2.1 (Apple Inc. build 5646) for Unix (Intel 386) on May 18 2009.
on 10.8.3:
Compiled with gcc 4.2.1 Compatible Apple Clang 4.0 (tags/Apple/clang-418.0.60) for Unix (Mac OS X) on Jun 20 2012
- ditto extracts all files and shows correct count of unzipped bytes in 10.8.3

Main difference: The ML zip is compiled with Apple Clang, not with gcc.

Did you have problems with unzipping Gorilla in your last OS version?

If you would like to continue this investigation I would suggest that I send you a small zipped test file and we will see if it can be unzipped by your new OS. And you would send me a zipped test file, too, which I could analyze.

Both of you seem oblivious to the fact that there is a Troubleshooting tab above that is more suitable for the type of discussion you're having; It certainly doesn't belong in Reviews/Comments!

Umaromc

BigJohnson, you seem oblivious to the fact that no one reads those you dickhead.

Over 100 negative... I wonder why.

BigJohnson

Hey dumbass:
Nobody NEEDS to read them except you & Umaromc!

Don't discusss your problems at length in the REVIEWS section! It's very simple (for most people) to tell someone to continue the discussion in the Troubleshooting tab - that's what it's there for!

ML 10.8.2 Finder sez: "Password Gorilla" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash.

Reply1 reply

It is caused by Apple's new security policy. Only registered (and paying) developers get a key to encrypt their application to pass the gatekeeper. Try open the program with right click.

I like that it uses the widely supported Password Safe format.

I am having difficulty in that not all accounts on my system (10.6.8) can run the application. I installed it from an admin account, but the next account I tried it from claimed "it may be damaged or incomplete". I downloaded it from within that account and then dragged it to the Applications folder and needed to authenticate as an admin before it would replace the old installation (as expected), and that allowed those two accounts to now run the application, but no others (admin or not). Eventually I had to log into each account and install the software from each account in order to get it to work in each account. I have no idea why this would work - I could maybe understand why only the account that installed it would work due to permissions types of issues, but I would have thought that using a different account would screw up the first one if that were the case. Oh well.... we'll see what happens when I try to update it some time in the future....

So, does Password Gorilla store the encrypted PW information locally to the user's hard-drive or are they stored in some sort of secured Cloud on-line database?

Also, what are the browser requirements? If it works with Firefox, will it work with TenFourFox, as well?

Many thanks! ;)

The password informations are stored in a file which is encrypted. This file can be stored everywhere, locally on a hard-drive, on a USB-Stick or on a net-drive. To open this file you need PWGorilla and your master password. If you have forgotten your master password nobody can read this encrypted file, even brute force attacks won't have a chance.

As to the browser requirements: PWGorilla just launches the browser you have selected in your OSX environment with an "open " command. So all the browsers you can select in your OSX preferences will work.

Umaromc
+1

Local and encrypted, I wouldn't use it otherwise, the "cloud" is never safe. You can choose a strong password for an online account but that won't patch their back doors...

A few months ago I gave PW Gorilla a try to manage my passwords.

It works great! Payed solutions like 1pw certainly offer more fancy features, but basically gorilla does all that´s needed, too.

p.e.: I use it with dropbox, the iApp "dropsafe" on my mobile device and an auto-synced USB stick (database+gorilla applications). Thus, I can access all my passwords on my Mac, anywhere by internet connection, on my mobile device or on USB stick (even on windows!).

I don´t want to miss it!

my suggested improvements:
- mac-like interface
- full integration of non-url locations such as applications, files, disk images, WLAN/VPN...
- optional sendkey functionality for paste-protected input fields

Thank you, developers, for your great work!

thanks for asking - for sure it is.
to be 100% technically correct:

"The password is SHA256 protected and the database contents are encrypted with Bruce Schneier’s Twofish algorithm. Brute force attacks are prevented by key stretching"

Developers who fail to provide screenshots of their products should not expect many people to download them.

Right or wrong - to me the omission of screenshots indicates someone who is either lazy or who doesn't think much of their own product. In either case I'm not interested.

Glad to see the screenshot go up on MacUpdate. I didn't find one on the dev's site though which prompted my original post.
