ICQ ("I seek you"), is a once-popular program that notifies you in real-time when friends or colleagues are online. Once they are online, you can send them messages, chat, play games, exchange files, and more.
The "New ICQ" includes:
Facebook Chat - Add your Facebook friends to your contact list and chat with them directly from ICQ
Messaging History - View your messaging history with friends directly from the contact list or the message window
Status Update - Update your ICQ status and post it to Facebook and twitter with a click of a button
Share Videos - Send
Requirements
Intel, Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later, Adobe Flash 10 or later, Adobe AIR 2.5 or later.
This oooold version still runs on 10.6.7 and rarely crashed over the past 8 years..
There is a new official Mac-version based on Adobe AIR, but it doesn't import my old databases (history), so I keep up using this old one for now. The old version has_no_ gimmicks at all, it is a straight text-based messenger and that's what I want. No web 2.0 fuzz, no multi-feature bastard. That's why I was never jealous about the "feature-rich" Windows version..
Indeed. However, the old version is a PPC binary and therefore won't run on Lion. So if you want to continue using it you'll have to use the version with all the new cheese (if you upgrade to Lion next month).
I would agree... except this way, we don't have to deal with their banner ads either.

More than any other IM service, ICQ seems to have the biggest problem with spam messages. Its very common for me to wake up in the morning and find 10-15 of these messages waiting for me.
It has gotten so bad that I rarely ever connect to ICQ anymore.

This app is kinda aged! it definitely has lost ground to other IM programs.
An update would be great!

The Mac version really needs to be updated !

Why isn't ICQ for Mac updated? It is almost 2 years old now and the Windows version is far ahead, has games and you can do video conferences, it has far more features. I can't receive files from some Winusers with ICQ 3.4, it has an rather ugly interface and you can't press 'Return' instead of clicking onto 'Send'...
fix all these issues and I'll be happy with ICQ for Mac...
so far it's rather useless for me...
The application doesn't open properly. OS 10.4.6, dual G5... it recognizes that it's an App, but it has the standard 'application' icon, and opens by default in textedit as a bunch of jumbled code.

and now, 8 years later once can say that the further development apparently was discontinued.
