Beware of this and other products from Arcsoft. Entirely slows down your Mac by running some weird services, causing Spotlight and Intego Virus Barrier running at 100% CPU usage.

DO NOT USE ANY ARCSOFT PRODUCT!

PanoramaMaker 7 is on sale today, so I thought I'd give it a try. First I checked at ArcSoft's site and found their Draconian licensing terms. Amazed, I tried to call and get clarification. After 2.5 hours of repeatedly calling, I finally reached a human. Sorry, no customer service today—the person's out. No fallback. Between the licensing terms and difficulty in reaching customer service or tech support on the phone, I decided to pass. This is similar to experiences I had with ArcSoft years ago. Now I remember why I don't use their software.

I compared the version 7 demo with Canon's Photostitch and Doubletake. The panoramas from Photostitch and Doubletake were crisper. Doubletake was the fastest with more controls.

I saw the MacUpdate reminder that this panorama maker 7 offer was expiring soon, so I came to the page. I spotlighted the words and found I too had bought (and never used) Panorama Maker 5. And, for good reason. I launched it to see if the app's built in Upgrade would offer something different. Forget about it. The app launched and started looking for unmounted drives, then looking for a movie I do not know even exists, and then just hung with the Cancel button inoperative.

Figuring there was no harm in trying out the trial version of PM7 I went to their site… what a bunch of BS… it downloads the free trial (linked on the PM7 page) but it is PM5. That probably means PM7 is even worse than PM5 Mac. The PC version too is an older version that it downloads.

Then I remembered why over the years I had never had any positive experience with any ArcSoft product… probably some nice guys and gals in some now bigger sized garage with good wishes and ideas but poor implementation.

Alas, even as a big fan of panoramas for decades, even at this discounted price I would not and cannot risk this.

A while back I bought PM 5 as part of a bundle.
I shoot a LOT of panoramic images, previously on film (scanned at 4000dpi) and now on digital SLR

PM5 had a mixed run with my images. Some panos worked fine, stitched together tightly and seamlessly.

Others failed comprehensively, with massive distortions.

All of my original images are shot on pro tripod with pro tripod head for shooting VRs and specifically for shooting overlapping images etc

I sent some of the images to the company and they tried to stitch together - end result is that they couldn't, so I have stopped using the software.

Your mileage may vary, you may never run into images you can't stitch, but if you hit the same wall I did, the software doesn't deliver.

I would urge you to trial the software with your largest image files (indiv files 50-80MB EACH) and shot under differing circumstances to test software.

I certainly won't be paying to upgrade to PM7 unless and until company can prove to me that images shot on semi-pro cameras (Nikon DSLRs) on pro tripod with pro VR head will be stitchable!

I scan my paintings on a flatbed scanner and then join the images. I was using an older windows app was $300 at the time Panavue, it had auto but I preferred fully manual for doing flags to join images.

Panorama Maker is starting to look like it. I wish it had more manual overrides, I think parallax issues of a camera compared to a flatbed image gives me more grief cause that setting isn't available so the software has to work harder to join.

If I do each row in slices and then join the final image I get a 600 MB massive crisp image. I was able to get it working perfect once and it will likely do the job!

A different app called PanoEdit worked faster but had some blurry spots, I literally did get a perfect scan joined, it took some effort and playing around with the Panorama Maker 5 software, but I'm glad I bought it. The trial software never seemed to work, plunking down the CASH to unlock the app helped. I paid $30 seeing it on sale on MUpromo and although had failures earlier plunked down the cash.

I'm elated that I have a $30 mac app that could be equal to a $300 PC app, I'm looking forward to using this application again.

I recommend the developers buy Panavue then grab a canvas painting and scan it on a flatbed and start joining the painting back together again, I'm sure you would be able to make improvements for Mozaic flatbed scanning.

But I'm impressed with this app and I have bought a lot of stitching apps that go nowhere. This one is a keeper, I tried your earlier versions and they didnt work, so this software is starting to mature and be a professional product.

Look people do not realize that if your making a scan of a painting that is say 3 feet by 3 feet using the size of a flatbed scanner that is the size of a sheet of paper, that every single scan on all four edges needs to be joined PERFECTLY to have a good scan.

Almost every program 99% rave about actually FAIL for my usage. Most skies they can get away with "fudging" an edge. I scan with overlap so I need it to blend in such a way as to not blur a detail out while keeping every line in the painting joining up without soft spots or jigs and jags. Basically I need a perfect MOZAIC stitching program.

Its a little different then joining camera shots.

Overall I found my demo version to work just fine (Panorama Maker 5.0 running on Mac OS 10.6.8). Generally the results I obtained were better than PFactory, for example.

Pano Maker has better success with images that have defined edged, such as landscapes. I did take a nice panorama of storm clouds but could not get these stitched together properly. It was as if Pano Maker could not blend clouds. Other software has better results with clouds.

The worst part of the software is that a tiny red "ArcSoft" box was installed in the upper left corner of my Mac under the "File" menu. It appears that the sole purpose of this little app is to call home and eat up my computer's resources. I found that the parasite app spooled up my resources and bogged down my computer. I used Activity Monitor to track down the culprit app and had to manually delete it.

What a complete waste of my time and energy, not to mention my productivity too. I cannot give Pano Maker a very high rating because of the parasite app.

I'm afraid I can't give it positive review. On my Mac Pro running 10.8.2 it installed perfectly, but wouldn't run. Upon launch it started using up CPU cycles and Activity Monitor show it "not responding" for about 10 minutes before I gave up and force quit it. I also needed to force quit an ArcSoft Daemon.

[I didn't want to rate anything except stability, because it isn't really fair of me to rate features, ease of use, etc. when I can't get it to run, but MU doesn't allow one to give a rating unless one rates each of the categories]

Thanks for the help, but I already had "Anywhere" set in my settings. The software installed fine...it just locked up when trying to run it.

Crashed upon launch. Seems to be primarily a Windows company because the support request I sent from the web site says 7-9 days for a response!

I believe the issue is in its mathematical precision as compared to other similar products on the market, Mathematical modeling is something that cannot be faked, and that is what they did, they used a smoothing algorithm when a different model was required, not impressed with this product, caused a thread crash state and the product as I stated above is not really ready.

Do you have any others you can recommend? Kolor has Autopano, but they cost $165 (Pro) and $320 (Giga) so it's not really a fair comparison, although I imagine they produce better results (I have used Autopano to my satisfaction, although the UI like Panorama Maker isn't really Mac-like).
