Steam, which you have to run to even install and/or launch the game, has a UI the is confusing and difficult to navigate. It opens ports in to you machine you no longer have control over and take up resources you just don't need.
All in all while I really like Duke the Steam take all the flavor out of him!!!

I think it's great that the Duke is back, though. This one may not live up to the hype, but that was impossible from the get go, after suffering the longest delay in gaming history.
Clearly there are going to be sequels though, and I'm happy to have the franchise on the Mac.

It's looking good and runs well at native res. on my MacBook Pro 13" 2010 (2.66. 4GB, 320M)

I'm launching it from Steam, what's up with that?
Dual booted into Lion, redownloaded the thing, this is beginning to get annoying, the game is there, I paid for it, let me play it already :-(
To top things off, no matter what I try, Steam is refusing me logon credentials on my 27" iMac, so no go there either.
I'll withhold rating to see if this gets fixed in a timely manner, but I'm not amused, and all outa gum...

I'm only in for a short bit, but my mid 2010 Air is holding up quite well. (1,4GHz, 128GB, 320m)
Though I ended up fixing it myself, props to Aspyr tech support also, who were very responsive, offering suggestions via email.

It's a basic first-person shooter at best. Nothing like the previous versions where you had challenging levels with hidden sections and rudimentary puzzles to solve.
It's more akin to a movie with mediocre visual effects and no plot. The game degrades itself into a pathetic first-person hooker-shooter.
You save $5 on a game that's not worth $5. Avoid this and save your money.

Steam is a great solution for gaming. Cheater safe multiplayer, cloud syncing savegames and multi platform solution.

If I buy this game through macupdate (for the discount), then install it via steam, can I install the windows version on my windows box via steam? Or do I need to purchase the mac version directly from steam to get access to both versions?

I hate installing this piece of crap!
Why not App Store???

2. Steam has no game/app restrictions, unlike Mac App Store. Mac App Store doesn't support multiplayer, Steam does. Any game you buy through Mac App Store (like Civ V) you lose multi-player capabilities. That doesn't happen with Steam. Right now multiplayer is only Mac-Mac, but Mac-Windows support is coming soon.

2. Lose multi-player capabilities? Hmmm. Modern Combat: Domination work without any problems. Just like Call of Duty 4.

My work around give them a fake email and set the game to offline mode only. In other words don't pay money for this game it aint worth it!

Re: multiplayer -- you're correct, there is some multiplayer support available through MAS, but it's not as big an ecosystem as the Steam multiplayer is (plus Achievements and other social aspects of multiplayer... again, obviously irrelevant if you don't like that stuff to begin with).
