Safe Download Version overview

Safe Download Version... Snow Leopard users that installed Apple's Security Update 2011-003 can get daily safe file updates Safari uses to help make sure malware doesn't find its way onto their Macs. Apple doesn't, however, offer an easy way to tell when your definitions list was last updated, or what list version number is installed, so The Mac Observer whipped up Safe Download Version to handle that task for you.

Safe Download Version is a Mac OS X application that shows which safe downloads definition list version is installed, along with the date and time the definition list was last updated on your computer. The brand new version 0.4.1 update added the ability to manually update to the latest version of Apple's definitions list.

This is from Jeff Gamet of MacObserver.com, in response to my email to him about the problems several of us have been having with Safe Download Version: "We have Adam working on an update and should have a new version out next week, assuming there aren't any big surprises that crop up. We packed Adam up and shipped him off to a conference in New York this week, so he's kind of tied up until he gets back to the office. I'll make sure we run an article as soon as the new version is available."

I'm having the same problem as others. When I run Safe Download Version I get the error: Can't make "Oct" into type integer. Obviously I am running this in October. It has been running fine up until now. This is not a knock on the app but rather a bug and no way to contact the developer from the app.

I'm having the same problem as Apikoros. For the last few days when I try to use Safe Download, all I get is a message that says: Can't make "Oct" into type integer.

Suddenly Safe Download Version won't launch, instead giving me the message "Can't make 'Oct' into type integer." I've tried re-installing SDV, but still get the same message. As little as about two weeks ago it worked fine, reporting back that my machine was up-to-date with Apple's Safe Download version 24. I've read that there's malware in the wild that disables Apple's Safe Download feature, and that the malware is transmitted via a Flash installer that is not genuine, but I haven't used any Flash installer in ages. I also have no idea if the described malware would affect Safe Download Version, which is not an Apple application. Is anyone else experiencing this malfunction of Safe Download Version, or can anyone suggest what might be wrong?

Stable, useful and free. Let me download a newer virus-definition than was on my Mac, which for some reason Apple did not push down to me in the 4 days it had been out. Excellent utility.

Appears to work correctly. It always makes me a little nervous though when any app (whose developer I am unfamiliar with) requires my admin password to use.
