What's New
Version December 2, 2011:
Fixed the "Checkout Unavailable" error preventing certain accounts from purchasing items
Improved the framerate stuttering issues some clients were experiencing
Funny, the version number doesn't change and the changes are dated 2 Dec 2011 but the posted date is today. Yesterday the polst date was yesterday...I'm curious how many other programs get "updated" to remain at the top of the MacUpdate program listings (and in bold/red text).
Really used to be a great game but has been marred by all the accouterments (e.g. hats on top of hats, iPods, etc.) that detract from the game.
Hats, hats and more silly hats. Its not fun anymore- there's too much garbage and it has completely departed from the game its supposed to be.
I paid for my copy a couple of years ago and I still resent it. In the beginning it was awesome and a great teamwork game. You could 'lone wolf' your game but it wasn't as profitable. Now they throw in crazy hats, jars of urine (for throwing around), more hats.. and I think that's all. Its free now and its still not worth it to me.
There are still some servers that don't allow the foolish garbage and I might play those but otherwise I've uninstalled it. Mac or PC.. its .. all about silly hats.
Well, I cannot tell much about the game, since I hardly got to play it. SInce it was free I used it to check out how Steam works. The answer: It doesn't. At least not with this game.
Team Fortress took forever to load (at least five minutes between clicking the icon and actually making it onto a server - yes, I timed it), and about half the time before it finished loading completely. That was annoying, but what made me delete the game after four days of trying was the fact that the game crashed completely EVERY SINGLE TIME I tried to change a server or load a different map.
I know that it's free, but it's still not worth the time you have to spend with it.
Been playing it nearly since release. One of the best FPS games, if not the best, available for Mac. The only problem is it runs smoother under bootcamp for me in my MBP. Nevertheless, definitely worth a try.
I've easily logged over 100 hours in this game. It was worth the money when it wasn't free. Now that it is, anyone who hasn't given it a try definitely should. You get all the fun of a Call of Duty type online experience without the 12 year olds acting retarded or being obnoxious, because it's all dedicated servers. And server admins don't put up with that crap.
While great in its heyday, micro-transactions and a ridiculous amount of useless items and twice-a-day 'updates' have destroyed what was once easily a five star game and my favorite of all time. Half of the players in any public game will be sitting idle or trading to earn new items while you're trying to enjoy a supposedly unmatched team-based experience.
If you want my advice, play on vanilla servers with friends-only, and fuck off with the hats and other nonsense. Valve will make their money back ten-fold from those less intelligent users paying for what is actually FREE content. Or you can just play Left4Dead 2 instead and have a way better, albeit paid-for experience.
2 stars for costing nothing and being developed by a true bar-setting and quality-driven company, but otherwise - bad form Valve.. bad form. I really used to cherish this game.

Still deserves 5 stars though. Despite the hats and custom equipment shenanigans, the game is still perfectly balanced. Still the very best fun you'll have online.
What? The items don't even matter. You can easily play the game and not be affected by it. That's the beauty of it, you don't need any of the items. You can buy them to have them now, or you can just play normally and you'll often get them anyway (without you even realizing it) thanks to the drop system. Plus sometimes you're given items during certain seasons just for owning the game (Everyone was given a Halloween themed hat during Halloween). Stop blowing it out of proportion.

There are hundreds of weapons, hats and more to collect, craft, buy and trade. Tweak your favorite class to suit your gameplay style and personal taste. You don't need to pay to win
