Carbonite overview

Carbonite takes the worry out of backup by securely and automatically backing up your files to one of our state-of-the-art data centers.

By the numbers

  • Up to 13% of hard drives fail every year (Carnegie Mellon University, 2007)
  • 50% of computer users have lost or accidentally deleted files from their primary computer (Chadwick Martin Bailey, 2010)
  • Approximately 2 million laptops are stolen every year, and only 2% are ever recovered. (FBI, 2008)
Why back up your files?

Because bad things happen to files and computers all the time. Hard drives crash. Laptops get lost or stolen. Viruses damage or destroy files. Kids (and even adults) delete files accidentally. If you have valuable files you can't replace, the only real way to protect them is to back them up.

Why Carbonite?

Carbonite online backup saves time and money, provides extra protection for your files, and makes getting your files back fast and easy.

  • No media or expensive equipment to buy. And no shuffling through stacks of CDs or DVDs.
  • No need to remember to back up. Carbonite does it automatically and continually, in the background.
  • Secure transmission. Carbonite uses the same encryption technology used in online banking and e-commerce transactions.
  • Safe offsite storage. Your backed up files are stored in our highly secure data centers

So I wanted to try this app but oh well... The app downloaded was from August 2019, so quite old... so it was not too surprising the app could not be installed/opened. After deleting it the "App Cleaner" showed me lots and lots of crash logs. Each log created when I tried to open Carbonite... So I just let the trial expire and will still be using Backblaze...

Unfortunately, for the most part you don't know if this service will work until you need it. I periodically check the preference pane to make sure everything I want backed-up has a solid green circle. My Mac crashed and I needed to reinstall my back-up. Some things that Carbonite said were backed-up were not. Lost hundreds of dollars of software and some things that can't replaced. Frustrating.

One year ago I began a three year subscription to Carbonite. Now I have switched to an IMac. It has been so difficult to try to change the carbonate coverage to the Mac that I am abandoning the subscription in disgust. The friendly person at tech support was unable to help.

Much as I'd love to love Carbonite, the data upload times are just not worth it if you have any sizeable data to back up. I have a fair bit of data (incl lots of music files - about 1.5TB all together. So far, running full time, Carbonite has backed up 100GB of data — since September of 2011. It is now April of 2012. That would be an six months, folks - for 100GB of data. At this rate, I should have all my data backed up by 2014. I've contacted Carbonite support and they've offered suggestions, but it all amounted to "We're working on it." I'll just let it run and let the $60 subscription lapse in the fall, and move on to CrashPlan, BackBlaze - something that works.
