FoldersSynchronizer is a popular and useful utility that synchronizes and backs-up files, folders, disks and boot disks. On each session you can apply special options like Timers, Multiple Folders, Filters, Exclude Items, Auto-Mount local and remote volumes, launch your own AppleScripts, set how to resolve conflicts, execute an incremental or an exact copy, include locked files, and more.

What's New
Version 4.1.0:
64-bit download (default) runs on Mac OS X 10.7 only; version 4.1.0 for PPC & Intel machines, 32-bit, for Mac OS X 10.5 or later, is available for download here.
As requested, we added the check-box "Skip Permissions Check" to the Settings panel. If marked FS will skip the permissions check during the Scanning Folders phase only. FS will always perform the permissions check during the copy phase, and in case it cannot copy/replace/delete a file/folder it will report an error to the Log, as always. Skipping the Permission Check during the scanning phase could improve the speed of the scanning task, but it is not recommended. In facts, you could discover the "permissions denied" cases only after the whole scanning folder has been performed, that is maybe after a long long time.
Improved the "Send log via email" feature (Preferences/Log panel).
This version no longer copies the main folder/disk custom icon (if any).
Fixed a bug at mounting volumes requiring a password.
Fixed a bug at un-mounting remote volumes.
Fixed a bug at auto-defining the volumes to mount.

One problem. When you use this software to sync between two folders or drive. If you travel and change time zone. It will resync all files and take me 7 hours to complete. When yoiu come back to your homw time zone, and time zone change again, it will resynce the whole files again. And it took me another 7 hours
I've been using FolderSynchronizer since March 16, 2000. It's so easy to use, I have it set up for multiple tasks. From syncing my iMac to my MacBookPro to using it for backing up my Androind. Sometimes if I have a ton of stuff to copy to a different server on the network, instead of draggin each folder or file by hand I just open FS, put everything I'm going to move in a Multiple list, set my destination and run a one-time backup and I don't even have to think about it.
I can't think of a downside except that in version 3 I had to memorize what M F X Y V & S meant. I guess that's my own fault. And I see from the new product photos that with this new version I won't have to remember anymore since Multiple, Filters, Exclude, Conflicts, Volumes & Settings are written out.
Really looking forward to trying out this newest version
Downloaded FoldersSyncronizer and thus far have found it to be excellent. Quick to set up, fast to sync. Not sure what the difficulties people are writing about are. And - the support has been very responsive.
Update 6/11/11. Things have gone downhill since writing the original review. Had difficulty syncing my documents folder because FoldersSynchronizer said one file was a folder and the other a file. That was not the case. Support was responsive, but they did not provide a solution. Used another sync app (Mimmac) and simply replaced the older files. The problem may have been due to an older format used in Pages on one of the files.
Also, tried the "Multiple Folder" option to sync several folders in my Library. Kept getting "insufficient privileges" messages. Support said read the "backup the boot disk to remote voulume" instructions. I did and tried it. No luck. Again, while support was responsive, again they had no solution. Connected the external drive (MacBookPro) via FireWire and used target mode and reverted to Mimmac to back up these folders. All went well. No errors. Maybe it would have went well with FoldersSynchronizer had I used FireWire and Target Mode, but that was not a suggestion in their instructions (unless I missed it-?) nor in support response. May because this app seems to have developed from Windows is why the support was not aware and why the instructions for this procedure were so convoluted.
Oh well, others have had good luck, so evidently my experience is not the norm. But, if interested you may want to try Mimmac - only $10.
My apologies - I said in the post below that FoldersSynchronizer instructions did not suggest using FireWire and Target Mode. At the very end of a LONG and rather involved set of instructions, a "work around" mentions this procedure. My oversight. And, going back and looking carefully at support responses, I see they did mention briefly about Fire Wire mode being a work around.
FS doesn't replace a folder with a most recent file to avoid a great loss of data. In your case, since you didn't see any folder involved, we suppose that the folder was indeed a FilePackage. A FilePackage is a folder looking like a file, e.g. an application .app or a the iPhoto library. You can inspect the content of a FilePackage (thus be sure it's indeed a FilePackage) by clicking on its icon holding down the Control key and choosing the menu item "Show Package Content." We could add a new option on the Conflict panel as:
• In case a most recent file is going to replace an old folder (having the same name), do:
- Do not replace the folder. Skip.
- Replace the folder.
+ Ask me in any case.
I agree with "hugelshofer". I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT A "SELF-MADE RSYNC SCRIPT" IS, MUCH LESS HOW TO "SELF-MAKE" ONE! I'd rather have a not-so-good app that someone else who knows what they are doing created than create one myself. Most of us are not programmers! I'm just a regular ole person who loves Apple-ANYTHING! Between my iMac, MacBook Pro, iPad2, iPhone AND iPod Touch, I probably spend more money on great apps than I do on my mortgage! I'm much rather let the developers develop which buyers like me just BUY! :-)
I bought Buffalo Cloudstor which is PogoPlug powered and I have PogoPlug Pro. I FoldersSync ny local disk to my "Cloud" storage and I can access from anywhere in the world. Ver. 4.04 or FoldersSynch is FAST! FoldersSynch is top notch software!
Hi.
I added the following error message in the field of troubleshooting, but I have the feeling that this rubric not really in front of the most visitors. Therefore I replay my message here:
[ I'm using FS 4.0.4 under 10.6.7 to made an exact sync between two external disk drives (FAT32) and therefor I 've notice the following error entry in the log file: FS doesn't sync files if they are bigger then 4 GB or greater!
I hope the developer could help as soon as possible, because I think it is a bug in version 4, isnt' it?!? ]
Otherwise the program is a great utility and I use it for years.
Additionally the contact possibilities should been better. Unfortunately I found no hints to contact the developer direct by e-mail.....
We can ensure FoldersSynchronizer 4 can properly copy files greater than 4 GB. We have just re-checked right now and FS has successfully copied a file 10.7 GB large. Please contact us. You can find our email address at the end of the ReadMe file. If you deleted the ReadMe file please download FS from our web site. It's included int the FS package.
I contact the support of Softobe, they answer really quickly and so we could find out the basic problem, why I can't copy files greater then 4 GB?! The answer is quit simple – both of my volumes are formated as FAT32 - and this format doesn't support files greater then 4GB. My intention to write this additional information is to point it out, that FS has no dept therefor. Sorry, I believe this at first.
But hey, I think it was time to switch to another standard cross-plattform format for disk - the file limits of 4GB are not state of the art today! What a shame!
Every manufacturer of usb flash drives should switch to an other disk format, as soon as possible. This behavior is really unbelievable for me as a Mac user, who had to use FAT32 only for compatibility.
Kind regards.
This is a must have utility for me. Simple yet powerful. Good for back ups and keeping multiple folders and hard disks synchronized. This upgrade is well worth the $12 price.

It would be excellent if Mac to Mac copying of metadata could improve and if archiving was enabled.
