Entropy has been with me for 10 years and it still works flawlessly on Ventura and an Apple M1 chip. To me it is the best in class.

Hasn't been updated in a long time, but the same goes for other compression/archiving utilities that I've been using until now, namely Keka, 7zX, UnRar, GUI Tar, and RarMe. To have all those format options in one app, is really a plus. But Entropy needs some serious work.

(1) Password-protection shouldn't only be set to specific passwords: you should also be able to define a generic password protection setting, which makes Entropy prompt you with a password input request; that way you wouldn't be forced to make a discrete setting for *every* password you want to use.

(2) One big plus is the integration of tar + xz, which I use a lot for archiving purposes, in my case with a homebrew installation of xz, and a bash script running through an Automator service. However, the Filter setting to remove ".DS_Store" (and in my case also files that begin with "._") doesn't work for txz archives, which is annoying because you can actually exclude these hidden files/resources with shell scripts. Furthermore, there is no way to specify compression ratios for xz, as you can do in the shell, i.e. settings possible up to 9 plus extreme mode (for bigger files). And since txz is often used for backup purposes, it would be nice to have the ability to append the archiving date and time to the archive name. Last but not least, for unix file distribution, it would be nice to have the ability to force user/group settings to specific UIDs and GIDs, e.g. generic 501 and 20, force root & admin group etc., plus options for subdirectories, or simply to retain current user/group settings (for backup purposes). At least you can specify the destination folder, which lets you txz-archive files/folders in source directories with root/admin permissions.

(3) It would also be nice to have user-defined presets in the Finder's services menu, e.g. 7z, 100 MB split, high ratio, password prompt etc.

A year and a half and no update in sight. I think it's safe to assume this project is dead. Time to move on to other developers that give a crap about updating their software.

Any ETA on a new update? It's been almost a year. Amazing app, by the way. Is there any possibility of you adding .DMG support [creating DMGs for instance] in future updates? That would make this app perfect.

Without any doubt this is the best application of the genre for the Mac. Is my application standard for compression and decompression of files and worth every penny! Lack only support zipx files and have translation to Brazilian Portuguese to then win five stars! Highly Recommended!

I like it! Clean and simple interface, yet plenty of features. I'm knocking off half a star because if you set Entropy as the default app for zip files (and other archives), it assigns an eyeball-burning orange icon to them, which really looks out of place among all the other OS X icons. The dev says that redesigning the file icon is on his to do list, so I'm hoping my eyes get a break soon.

Over all this is a very good program, how ever unless I missed it, I cannot see theability to turn all the folders I put in the table each in to their own archive not one big archive. Also the buttons in the tool bar are not labeled for voice over users. Help tags would be nice though if lables cannot be provided. Thoughts?

I don't see .dmg creation and compression which I use for its easy mounting, viewing and access. Nor .zip7 which has the best compression.

Of all the archiving apps (ones which can CREATE and extract) I've tried, this one pleases me the most. It is able to handle files +4GB, which is important to me because I often need to archive large disk images, and have to break them up so they can be sent or stored on Windows FAT32 drives. The ability to define presets is fantastic and makes it easy to select the one that fits the job, i can define a preset for large images that doesn't waste time compressing (just chunks it up), into predefined sizes, like 250MB, or 1GB. The only other tool that comes close but doesn't have as nice a GUI is Ez7z. sArchiver never handled +4GB files and Entropy appears faster than BetterZip.

I guess $20 is kind of a lot for an archive utility. But that's the only possible gripe I can see about this program. Entropy handles both creation and extraction of all the major formats, and quite a few minor formats. Its default settings are sensible, but can be configured to suit lots of different methods of work. Because almost everything I need to do has been added to the Services menu, I hardly ever actually launch Entropy directly. But that's the way a utility should be: unobtrusive, waiting to do what you need, and then out of the way again. Great, great program.

Very impressed with Entropy - in particular the speed in unzipping a file. It also has some beautifully styled touches that really add to the pleasure of using it. The program gets out of your way too - it doesn’t need to open the archive before it unpacks it. Finally it supports a great variety of formats, including some of the more rare ones. Downsides? I don’t particularly care for the icon that it gives files. Given the program is so elegant, the file icons seem quite clumsy. But this is a little thing, and it doesn’t affect the functionality.
