If you are running Mac OS 9.0 or later and your Mac is capable of running 9.2.2, you can download the free Apple installers to update your Mac to Mac OS 9.2.2.They are available here: Mac OS 9.1, Mac OS 9.2.1, Mac OS 9.2.2.
Then you can use MSN Messenger 2.5.1

Microsoft is being pretty cruel to the older mac users. Its kinda sad to see that OS X has already Msn 4.0 and we are stuck here with no emotions no games no webcam no way to send attachments and no way to get a buddy icon or somthin. Even windows 95 has msn messenger 5.0!

Awww...I was so impressed with my little hack...so I'm just slightly dissapointed to find out that there actually IS another version...
Just when we thought the problem was solved, we start getting this new message saying a newer version is available, and you have to upgrade, but the only upgrade available is for OS X.
Okay, well I tried something and it worked...of course the way microsoft is, I don't know how long it'll work.
First, download ResEdit 2.1.3.
you can get it here: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/2037
It's a small file u can use to hack programs. When you use this, WORK ON A COPY of the file you want to hack.
1. Open the copy of the Messenger application with ResEdit.
2. A window will pop up showing all these differnt program parts...near the bottom you'll see "vers". Double-click on it.
3. Another window pops up. Double click on the row of numbers...
4. Now in the next window, you'll see the version number 3.5.0 at the top, change it to 4.0.0. Then where it says Short version, change it to 4.0, and then down at the bottom, change it to 4.0.
Now when you log in, the system thinks you are running 4.0
Cool!

By the way, I said to change it where it says 3.5.0, but I meant 2.5.0....doesn't matter...change it to 4.0.
And just to clarify, after you made the changes in ResEdit, just close all the boxes, and it'll ask you if you want to save the changes...just select YES.

I don´t know how long your solution will work, but I have just tried it and for now, IT DOES. Besides it´s the first time I ever use ResEdit.
So it´s a double tnx.

BUt does it screw up your computer????????
Anonymouscommented on 28 Aug 2004
when i tried it it said again that i needed 9.2.2 which i dont have.any reason why it said that?
Anonymouscommented on 08 Oct 2004
no, it doesn't screw up your computer. All you're doing is modifying the application so that it is identified as a different version. It does not screw up your computer.
Now if you start using resedit to modify your system files...then that's different and requires caution...but in this case, the instructions would NOT screw up your computer.
But even for 2.5.1...I think you still need to have OS 9.2.2

EVERYBODY USING MSN MESSENGER 2.5, it no longer works!! Its clear that everybody is having the same problem....about 4-5 days ago we were all told our passwords were incorrect or that a user name did not exist, when this is not true. The only solution I can offer is upgrade to mac os X or download mac messenger (which I have) it works pretty good and even has a few new features that our old msn didn't.

I figured that out after spending several hours troubleshooting it, which included changing my password, uninstalling it, re-installing it, searching all over the MSN web site, etc. What irks me is that Microsoft still has MSN Messenger 2.5 for download (as if it was still usable), AND they have no information about this issue anywhere in their help pages. They could have saved a lot of people some frustration if they simply posted a statement on the Messenger 2.5 page, that this version no longer works.
