I've got version 1.1 and was thinking upgrade, but I can't remember if it even cost anything back then because I can't find any transaction record/correspondence on it. I guess with all the improvements it's well worth another 6 bucks regardless.

Which is OK. It's MIT licensed. But just thought people might like to know they can get Snail Mail for free.

(Actually, Simple Envelope isn't new: the app had its start as Snail Mail, which Nik Sands discontinued developing in 2009 because of other commitments. The code for Snail Mail 1.8 has been open-sourced and can be found at https://github.com/knowuh/SnailMail -- the developers of Simple Envelope have taken that and made it compatible with 10.6.)
- SE doesn't scale images that are used for the return address. When I started looking for a replacement for Snail Mail, I found that EE scaled the image down. That wasn't a big problem, since I could just scale the image up before importing it into EE, but Ambrosia hasn't fixed that issue in nearly a year.
- SE supports profiles, with separate envelope size, return address image, formatting, colors, etc., for each. Typically I have a text return address for personal mail and an image for business mail; with SE I can switch using a popup menu, but EE loses the image when you switch to a text address.
- SE has a number of options for specifying what gets printed in the address panels and the formatting for each item. EE only allows the formatting of the entire field.
- SE has several barcode printing options. EE has one: off/on.
I have been using Snail Mail for, I don't know, ten years and for the last year have been limping along as I work around its deficiencies in Snow Leopard. Not one of the other commercial offerings beats it for ease-of-use. I am excited that Simple Envelope is now available!
Snail Mail is dead, long live Simple Envelope!
