With Air Display, you can turn your Mac into a wireless display. Extend your desktop to another Mac or Windows computer!

Developed by Avatron Software, home of the popular Air Sharing and Print Sharing apps for iOS, Air Display lets you position your Mac next to your other computer, drag windows onto it, and interact with those windows as you would on any other computer display.

Features:

  • Air Display's performance is extremely responsive, employing a unique dynamic compression algorithm. On a typical Wi-Fi network, mouse cursor refreshes are indistinguishable from a wired mouse. more...

What's New

Version 2.0:
  • Add up to 4 displays simultaneously (with the Mac host only for now; Windows support is coming soon. Must be running Air Display 2 host software and Air Display 2 on the extra screens)
  • Optimized performance and better energy usage
  • Additional display resolution support

Requirements

  • OS X 10.6.3 or later
  • Macs must be on the same network with main computer running Air Display Host (see Related Links)

Just a note about pricing: The host app for your Mac costs $20. Then you have to buy the client (iOS) app for $10, for a $30 total for this setup. Is it worth it? I don't know yet. I'm going all in and I'll soon find out.

Dispite MacUpdates saying Air Display Host is OK for MacOS 10.6.6 or greater, it won't install on my Snow Leopard - it alerts me that requires MacOS 10.7.5 or greater.

Thanks for letting us know that, RogerKatz! The developer's site (http://avatron.com/apps/air-display/download/mac) states that the minimum OS is OS X 10.6; the software has a string which specifies 10.7. Developers don't always keep their information in synch.

Moral of the story: don't believe everything you read. ;-)

I've found a funny way Air Display could be used!
Say you install the drivers and the app on the same mac, now you put Air Display window on the second space so you can have a laaaaarge window as if you'd have a double-width monitor! ;-)
This would be awesome for a mixer in a sound app such as ProTools, you could see the left part of the mixer in a space and the right part in the other one!
Well, on Air Display's side, it's working, you can drag-resize the current window of any app to occupy both displays, it's just that the way Spaces work makes the current window disappear just after you've switched space... :-(
Well, in the end it's just that Spaces is rather useless to me if it doesn't offer that behaviour.
Anyone knows about an app or extension or anything that could do that? :-)

I'm not going to spend $20 on an app I cannot test drive. No try - no buy.

From the developer's site, re the "public beta of Air Display for Mac: Retail" : - "The beta will run for an hour of connection time before prompting for a license key, or purchase"

Too bad this only works on Intel Macs with OS X 10.6.6. Many of us have older Macs where this would be a useful tool.

From the developer's site, re the "public beta of Air Display for Mac: Retail" : -
"Air Display for Mac: Retail is just like the app Air Display for Mac in the Mac App Store, but it runs on Macs that are not compatible with the Mac App Store, including PowerPC-based Macs and Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8. Now you can dig that old PowerBook or PowerMac out of the attic and have a second monitor!"

It's quite amazing: the version you mentioned runs perfectly on PPC, so I contacted them to try and get a license (even free ;-), here's the answer:

"Unfortunately we're no longer able to offer support or licences for the PowerPC version of our Air Display Mac client. I even checked with our engineering team to see if we had any codes for the old version of the software but unfortunately we're not able to generate them anymore."

I can't believe it! They've thrown away the codes! ;-D
So ScreenRecycler is the only solution left to use a PPC Mac as a second screen. (a pity, as Air Display is cheaper... :-/)
