BBEdit Lite is the freeware "cousin" of BBEdit, our award-winning HTML and text editor. BBEdit Lite offers a subset of BBEdit's technology and feature set, but retains the essential speed, flexibility, and ease of use that is the hallmark of our products. It's a great way to get a sense of the power of the commercial version of BBEdit, as well as a great text editor in its own right.

What's New

Version 6.1.2 fixes the following:

on Mac OS X 10.1, text could not be copied and pasted between windows in BBEdit Lite.
on Mac OS X 10.1, files would not show up in the "Open Recent" menu.
BBEdit Lite would crash when doing a multi-file search using a Search Results window as the source.
Zap Gremlins would malfunction when line-feed filtration had occurred but no other characters had been zapped.
Automatic tab expansion would sometimes do the wrong thing (or crash, on Mac OS X).

Version 6.1.2 fixes the following:

As of Jan 2005, Bare Bones made TextWrangler freeware. It does the same things as BBEdit Lite, and a lot more. More info at: http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/. Also, it requires 10.3 or later.

was torn between this and textForge and BBedit won for me with only one feature - I can open hidden files, no need to be in root. otherwise TextForge transparency and other cool stuff is really tempting.

This was posted on their web site a couple of years ago, IIRC. Apparently TextWrangler is meant to be their successor to BBEdit Lite, as a "light" text editor tool.

Still running strong on 10.3.4. Crossing my fingers that it will be compatible with Tiger. Best text editor I've ever had the privilige to use. Echoing the previous comment, it is sad to see that they have stopped officially supporting the freeware version. :(

BBEdit Lite is an awesome Macintosh program.
It is a pity that Barebones has stopped supporting it. Excellent for scripting and web design.

Well text edit plus has more features but you have to pay for that so this BB edit gets a three only because the reall BB edit/Commercial has more features than the lite so I am just showing the fact that this is about 30% of the commercial versions features which is ok
Hard to use compared to text edit
Value well its valueable but so is text edit middle
Stability it is stable
