I was using Sophos Home Edition as my primary A/V and running MacScan occasionally, primarily to clear web browser files, but on 2012/05/22 I began experiencing kernel panics. In the text that appeared onscreen the Sophos kext was referenced so I uninstalled Sophos Home Edition and the kernel panics magically vanished.
It seemed to work pretty well up until that point, running in the background with no noticeable slowdown and automatically updating itself, but obviously kernel panics are a deal breaker.
I notched this afternoon (GMT) that Sophos on my Mac was not updating. When I tried to manually update, I received the message that it could not contact the Server. I also found that I couldn't raise their web page. Has it gone down? I have never known this issue before.
I've used this product for about a month on a Core2Duo 2.16 4GB Ram. Unlike others I didn't notice any slow down or crashes. Sophos was running rather smoothly.
All was fine until I noticed some Java applications I do not use on a daily basis didn't launch anymore.
I uninstalled Sophos and the issue vanished.
It found a few pc malware files. I'm sure Sophos added these to their big false percentage of infected Macs (you've read recent news eh?). I have a whole lot of archives on a few drives. Right now I'm scanning a lot of old pc files I moved from DVD's and Sophos found 6 out of 7 files with a "Mal/Generic-S" Threat name. After researching, it's plain to see that the name is their own "classification" they give to files that their program can't understand!! They are flagging things that MAY or MAY NOT BE Malware just becasue their app can't really identify if it is or not, it *might* have the characteristics of Malware. THIS IS FAR FROM CONCLUSIVE AND AKIN TO FRAUDULENT VIRUS REPORTING.
ALSO and more importantly: I'm running a Quad Core 3.2 GHz machine, and Sophos is right now flagging in Activity Monitor as using OVER 100% PROCESSOR TIME. This is totally unacceptable. I was curious why opening windows was so slow and clicking the mouse took like 3 seconds before it activated the click. That's why.
DO NOT USE THIS PROGRAM. Soon as this scan is finished I'm dumping their false-reporting, processor-sucking piece of junk off my machine. And I'm going to publicize this all over....their doomsaying about 60% (or whatever it was) of Macs infected with Malware IS A BIG FAT LIE.
The other day I ran it on all my drives, it took hours to complete, and didn't come up with a single infected Mac file, just a few old pc files with that same Generic warning. This company is really having a hayday with this recent Java malware...they are trying to capitalize on it and RIP OFF Mac users with false information.
PS, yes I realize this version is free, but there's a lot of naive people who are gonna bite and buy the paid version thinking it's somehow better after some of their PC files get flagged. Thus as I said...a big fat rip-off.
My Mac is far from being the "latest" model yet Sophos is using far less CPU and it's much faster than ClamXav on performing scans. I do not have any of the issue most of the people mention here even on very large files.
The only problem I encounter is related to Java applications. They just don't launch.
So for now I will stick on ClamXav. If a bit slow, it has been reliable for years.
First I had (and have again), a rock solid Mac.
Rarely gives me problems, super fast, no spinning beach balls, etc...
After installing this my Mac slowly became slow, sluggish, spinning beach ball for most apps. Launch times of apps was HORRIBLE!
Cant be a coincidence.
I finally got sick of it, did the math that this was the last app install before the slow down, trashed it and all its relating files, flushed cash, repaired permissions, and like magic I have my fast Mac back!
As I said, can't be a coincidence.
Yeah my install is a fresh install of 10.6.8, just today...there's nothing at all that could cause this on a really fast Mac, nothing interfering, nothing else running etc etc, it's simply a BAD program.
Application crashes and the occasional kernel panic. Had several crashes today and a kernel panic (the first in I don't remember how long) after installing Sophos v8 and updating to the latest version. Have been using v7 for a long time and never had problems, but I have noticed odd behavior and crashes since installing v8. MS Word 2008 hung and crashed - and it's usually rock solid - and my mid 2007 iMac rebooted due to a kernel panic. The log files says it clearly: Sophos 8. Proceed with caution.
Be forewarned: After installing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition v8.0.1 I experienced a kernel panic when I restarted my mid-2010 iMac (10.7.3). I then used the Sophos Removal/Uninstall program and restarted without incident.
1. By default, it checks for updates hourly -- and it does appear that they do frequently update their data because I see downloads happening during many of those checks.
You can change that frequency.
2. You can choose to have it look inside archives routinely or not. If you choose not -- it will still check the contents when you actually open an archive -- or manually select an archive to scan.
3. You can also tell it wether or not to do networked drives.
4. In addition to these "built-in" do-it-or-not choices, you can add specific files/folders/drives for it to ignore.
5. You can choose what it does when it finds a problem --- clean, block, move assorted sequences.
6. To save time for manual system back-ups, you can disable on-access scanning during the backup
7. Lastly --- if you out-geek yourself into the realms of outer darkness confussion --- there is allways the "restore to defaults" button. ;P
Any company gets my vote when they produce a freeware product just because they are fans of Apple computers.
However, after installing this app and test-driving it for a few weeks, all I see is a white cross in the middle of the icon in the menubar. The log keeps telling me "Cannot find primary server." I'm also prevented from manually updating for the same reason. A message "Could not find primary server" keeps appearing. I noticed there is an option in Preferences for a 'secondary server' but it's non-selectable.
It would be a more reassuring to see the shield, if only it gives me the impression it's actively protecting my system.

it is so annoying and confusing also!!
best thing is when anti-viruses apps hide its icons from the MENU BAR as well as the DOCK and make it running in the background!!!

So, it is better if they add the option whether to hide it or not
