YouTube5 Safari Extension removes the need to use flash on YouTube by converting all videos to their HTML5 video tag equivalents. It also has the added benefits of decreased CPU usage compared to flash, and the removal of in-video ads.
What's New
Version 2.0:
A custom designed HTML5 player to replace the usable, but very limited built-in player.
Support for Vimeo and Facebook video.
The ability to switch video resolutions within the player, without having to access Safari's preferences.
Support for downloading videos from YouTube and Facebook.
A fully functional volume control, rather than just a mute button.
Support for displaying the video's title, author, and source, in a video overlay, along with a link back to the video's page on YouTube, Vimeo, etc.

Works really great on my i7 920 hackintosh but stutters and doesn't load properly on my 2011 i7 15" MacBook Pro. Both computers running the latest safari and lion.
Works very well for me (PowerMac G5/DualCore2.5GHz; eg. a broken QuadCore).
No chopping video; plays smoothly even while loading.
I don't know which is best; FlashToHTML5 or YouTube5, but they both seem to work for me with YouTube.
Before things broke nearly two weeks ago, I'd almost forgotten how online video used to work before YouTube5. The arrival of version 2.2.7 makes my day. As always, it's simple, painless, fire-and-forget. I couldn't ask for more.
Has anyone else had this extension, or any other third party html5/downloader for youtube quit working? As of this morning, no youtube videos will play or download in youtube5 version 2.2.5 and mactubes 3.07 will no longer download, and will only play videos with flash. The only html5 player I can get to work is youtube's own player. If anyone has a solution, or any ideas of what's going on, let me know, thanks!
Anyone know how to get in touch with the developer of this extension via email? I can't find anything on his site as contact information. All I see are public comments. I want to send email so i'm sure he gets this bug report. Thanks
Early this morning, when checking extensions in Safari preferences, I noticed that YouTube5 was offering an update to 2.2.7. I crossed my fingers, updated it by clicking the install button within Safari preferences, and YouTube5 is back.
I don't know why an update hasn't been listed here yet. I hope I'm not jumping the gun or anything, but it's working fine for me so far. 10.6.8, Safari 5.1 (6534.50).
yes It works here too on both snow leopard and lion. I checked the archives on the site and there was a post about the update on the dev's site. Either way good job, now i don't have to rely on flash, and i can download videos right from safari again. :)
As of yesterday this extension has seemed to quit working all together. Now all videos seem to be loading in the typical flash player. Before that, it worked flawlessly.
I checked the settings and all are as I have had them set.
The only things on my system that have changed are:
I updated to the latest flip4Mac.
I installed the RB&D software for the Mac. Their software consists of mainly a player for their protected book content and a special download manager which only seems to work with firefox. Neither of which should interfere with safari, as nothing installed is on a system level.
With autoplay turned on, when I try to view a YouTube video, there seems to be a duplicate of the video playing in the background where I can't see the player and stop it. The background video always starts playing first, so I can't watch the video in the foreground without hearing the audio twice - once early, once with the foreground video.

(>50 % with Adobe Flash ...)
more 'plus':
+ nice Player UI
+ preferences for Video-Quality
+ 'no autoplay' pref for Youtube
- struggling with 40 min. Video in 1080p, maybe a Cache thing
in Safari ^^ (cause MacTubes does it)
5 stars !
