A lean, minimalist alternative to WriteRoom at a far better price, and its only real competition. Problems: Developer responds to suggestions for improvement with the explanation that he wrote this primarily for his own use, I suppose the logic being that requests for features he himself wouldn't use are not really worth considering, and one gets the sense that the app won't be developed further. For example, I alerted him that, upon loading a file, FocusWrite momentarily "loses" the desktop curtain, which has the effect of "flashing" the desktop for a fraction of a second before the file loads. Not a big deal, but a distraction, and not a problem one finds in WriteRoom. I also suggested that the app's prefs include a way to load the last file worked on upon relaunch. Developer dismissed both ideas out of hand, the first with the comment "this is not a bug, but just how FocusWrite works," the second on the grounds that it isn't a feature he would use himself. I have no problem with a developer who writes a program for his own use putting it out there for others who may want to use it as is, but this is $9.95 shareware, and it seems inconsistent to sell the app without any real receptivity either to feature requests or ongoing development and improvement. For this reason, I'm giving the app only three stars. With a little more enthusiasm and commitment from the developer, this easily could be a five-star app, and IMO, with even just a few more of the sort of features included in WriteRoom (including better masking of the desktop and the option to reload the file that was open when the app was closed last), this would be a five-star app that would pull ahead of WriteRoom as the full-screen text editor of choice.

Everything you write is right.

I wrote FocusWrite for my own usage, and it's only near the end of the development that I figured out that it was good enough to be sold. I'm a would-be writer, not a programmer, and I don't want to devote a lot of time to FocusWrite. Programming makes me sad, because doing it, I know I would be better reading or writing...

Of course I could have made it freeware, but I had such a hard time learning Objective-C and coding it, that I feel I deserve the 35 sells I've had so far.

Please, take FocusWrite as it is : it's fast, stable, and cheap. Try it, and buy it only if it suits your needs right now. If you feel FocusWrite isn't worth the price, just trash the preference file to reset the trial period…

Thank you for this fair review.

A sweet and honest reply from the developer, which I appreciate, and as a writer who can get diverted by techno-detours, I can relate. I went ahead and purchased FocusWrite anyway. Maybe sometime in the future, the developer will surprise us with a few improvements or additions, though I hope without too much sadness. :) Best of luck with your writing, Franck.

I've tried downloading this twice and each time I try to open it I get this message from OSX "You can't open the application FocusWrite because it is not supported on this type of Mac".

I'm running 10.6.4 on an iMac Core Duo @ 2GHz.

After I wrote the above I realised it's because it's 64 bit only. Why 64 bit only?

I've stupidly assumed that all Macs able to run Snow Leopard were 64 bits, so I only released a 64 bits version of FocusWrite. I recompile it for 32 bits compatibility and post an update as fast as possible.

I'm deeply sorry for this inconvenient.
