A very nice and easy to use software. I used it to type up my entire PhD thesis; except for a single instance where the software hung up I did not experience any issues. I gave up using TexShop once I got Latexian because it accepted all the packages without my having to decided between LaTex, Tex, XeLaTex and whatnot.

If you like latex and keeping an eye on what you're doing you should get this app.

Simple request, I would like to be able to set a longer delay after typing before it regenerates the live preview, or have it not regenerate the live preview if the mouse is moving and/or clicking.

Absolutely the best editor yet. Auto-completion, life preview. Just what I needed. Maybe a tiny bit too expensive, but that's probably because I'm a guy with no money.

I've tried texshop, textpad, scribo, ... This is the best one by far. All the others had flaws.

Just one request : I don't like the temporary files cluttering in the document directory while the application is running. Can those files be hidden?

Best LaTeX editor ever. Developer very responsive. I hope it will add the few missing bits which would make it perfect.

Is there a possibility to jump to an exact location from/to the pdf preview and the source text by clicking on either ? For me this feature is more important than the online preview.

There are two commands in the View menu that allow going between the source and Live Preview PDF: "Show Selection in Live Preview" and "Show Preview Selection in Source".

I have been searching high and low for a Mac LaTeX editor with instant preview. This is it. Works perfectly.

Also, the developer provides excellent support: I had a question about the software and emailed Taco Software. I got an email back almost instantly with a clear answer to my question.

I've found Latexian to be very stable and mature software, despite only being 1.0.x. The instant "live preview" feature is a Godsend, and the ability to see your file hierarchy as well as the navigator makes it very easy to arrange large projects. I work with multilingual texts using XeLaTeX, and Latexian has had no problems with any of this. I've been using it as my main (Xe)LaTeX editor for over half a year now (since it was in beta), and have written a large part of my PhD dissertation using it. The developer is very friendly and responsive, and has fixed bugs very quickly. While it's not free like the excellent TeXShop, I find that its features -- such as the live preview, fold selection, tabbed interface, navigator, clips, preview errors in the gutter, code completion, and others -- make it an excellent LaTeX writing environment. It is easy to customise to one's liking. While there is definitely space to grow (I for one would like ConTeXt support in the future), it serves excellently for what it is meant to do -- to write undistracted in LaTeX.

Latexian is very nice "single-window application" that makes working on LaTeX documents a pleasant and productive experience. I've used TeXShop before I discovered Latexian, and although it is a fine application, Latexian has considerably more polish. The single-window interface is fully configurable, and I like the ability to see a live preview of what I'm working on just to the right of the text I'm typing in. Other nice features include the "File Browser" and "Navigator", which makes jumping around in a large document composed of several source .tex files easy to do. I've sent an email to the developer asking him to enhance these capabilities to be more "Scrivener-like", so that outlining and structuring longer documents is even easier. (Scrivener is another nice application, ideal for flexibly structuring large documents such a book.)

I've given Latexian ratings of 5 for Ease of Use, Value, and Stability. It's an excellent application, and I've shaved my rating for Features to 4.5, only because I'd like to encourage the developer to continue to enhance the application. With a bit more work, it could be an absolutely top-notch program.

I gave Latexian a thorough try out, as I said that I would do.

Previously I've used BBEdit to write Latex docuements, kept as BBE Projects, and I processed them through TeXShop. This has required constant switching between subsidiary documents in BBE and the parent document in TeXShop. The process was also slow, with most time spent waiting for the appearance of the typeset documents. It was a frustrating process, even with the aid of some scripts to speed it up. I've also tried other document production systems, including TeXMaker, TeXWorks, TeXFoG, LyX, and Publicon, which I used for years (though not for LaTeX).

With many free apps available, I never thought I'd find one I'd want to buy, but Latexian is it. The speed of the Live Preview has to be seen to be believe; nothing else comes close. You can see and fix complex expressions essentially in real time. The navigation system is very intuitive. The Preview File feature means that I can typeset or Preview directly from a subsidiary document without having to switch to the main one. The clippings library has also proved essential for saving and retrieving expression templates. Code completion is also a time saver. The regular expression support is excellent and the multi-file batch find is very usable.
I've also corresponded with the dev, and he's proved very responsive.

Latexian still isn't perfect yet; I don't like the layout of the Quick Insert palettes, for example. But, to my mind, it's the single best Tex production application around.

I forgot to mention one other feature which contributes to Latexian's speed and convenience. With BibTeX entries TeXShop required three manual typesetting runs: Latex, Bibtex, Latex. Latexian has an option to do all the runs automatically.

I haven't found Latexian to be all that useful. My Latex projects consist of a main .tex document with sub-documents that are "input:" into the main document. My current workflow is to use BBEdit projects to edit the .tex documents, LaTeXiT to preview sections of them, and TeXShop to produce the final versions.

Latexian provides Previews only of the Main document. Although there is a tool to go from a section of a .tex file to the Preview, it won't work for me, since all the substance is in the subsidiary documents, which won't preview on their own. Too bad. The Live Previews work pretty well. I like the fact that, unlike TeXShop, Latexian does not need manual passes through LaTeX and BibTeX and LaTeX again. I'd buy the app immediately if it knew how to link subsidiary documents to the Previews it creates.

Latexian allows you to specify a "Preview File", which is used when using Preview or Live Preview for your included document. You can do this by opening Latexian's Get Info panel for the document. More info is available in the help docs:

Thanks!. I apologize for not reading the help more carefully. I keep my TeX documents in BBEdit projects, and it's easy to write a macro to add the line needed to separately preview an included file. When I need to write a new LaTeX document, I'll give Latexian a full work out, but I now like what I see.

Above, I give Latexian a 5 star rating, but I didn't describe how it deals with the problem I originally asked about: how to link the preview to specific parts of the original TeX file. It does this by starting with the TeX document, rather than the Preview, a much better approach than the one I had envisioned (start from the Preview). If you edit text, even in an included document, while Live Preview is open, Latexian makes the change in the Live Preview and can automatically scroll to the change . It's also possible to select part of the TeX document, changed or not, and "Show the Selection" in the Preview.
