CloudApp is simple file sharing for the Mac. Drag a file from your Mac to the CloudApp icon in the menubar and we take care of the rest. A link to the file will automatically be copied to your clipboard that you can give to a friend over Twitter, IM, email, or smoke signals. While other applications make sharing a chore, CloudApp stays out of your way adapting to your specific needs.
  • Share files and links (Drops).
  • Upload by drag-n-drop or using global keyboard shortcuts.
  • Share Drops using private or public links.
  • View a history of your Drops right from the menubar.
  • Re-copy the more...

This is perfect for sharing links among devices including Android tablets and phones, iPhones and iPad and PC, Macs all at the same time. If you share links with someone you trust a lot, you can just use the same account on multiple devices.

Unlike junk like Google Drive, urls are easy to share and open right away all with one or two clicks.

I also love how I can simply drag the URL icon from Safari straight to the cloud icon in the menubar and I'm done.

At least when it comes to sharing links among multiple devices, it's simple to set up, straightforward and vastly easier to use than Google Drive, Dropbox (which I don't trust anyway), etc.

While you can also upload files, I think it's a bit too limited for my preference. You can't create your own folders, etc. which is a major downside. It'd also be helpful to be able to create folders for links, so that's a bummer.

Pocket is another app that's great for sharing links and I like how they handle links a little better than Cloudapp. For one, you can right-click on the bottom of listings to go stright to the URL in your browser, whereas Cloudapp doesn't have that option and you first go to a shortened url which then resolves to the URL. I've found this to be slow, so it's also a major downside.

As far as saving links goes, I give Pocket the edge over Cloudapp. While Pocket doesn't have folders, you can tag items and organize that way. And something VITAL missing from Cloudapp is a SEARCH function like Pocket has. Also, Pocket has a handy Safari Extension available to add urls, I haven't found one that works with Cloudapp.

I'm not going to compare this with Droplr, since that doesn't have a free option.

CloudApp is a great service if you can live with what the Free service offers. However, if this is not the case and you need to get the paid subscription then you are most likely better off with service such as Dropler which hase much higher shared file size limit (CloudApp 250MB and Droplr 2GB). That said for random casual use this is very nice and Free but when you need more serious service then it might be better to go with something like Droplr.

Since the "similar software" is not finding it, look at BitTorrent Sync if all you want is to sync files between devices anywhere you have an internet connection. There is no need for your files to be stored in any server along the way. Do a general search here at MU or go to http://www.bittorrent.com/sync.

You do not need any servers... cloud or otherwise... to sync. Though still in beta at this time, I have been using it since release without a glitch. Read the PDF manual for how to refine both what it does and how it does it to control impact upon your local network. It can be easily refined. And yes it is free.

MAS only?!? Another one? I know MU staff don't like ratings about the distribution methods of apps, but going MAS only kills users choice. And not having choice directly attributes to the User experience with a software.

Pretty sad about this move. So now looking into setting up owncloud with screenshot uploading feature and be done.

you're right, Monkeyjunkey, it's inconvenient as hell with all these steps required over and over again for finally downloading a ridiculous piece of software

one day i'll probably turn my back on apple - they are going megalomaniac

The AppleScript support makes CloudApp upload very simple, fast and useful with applications such as Alfred 2.

There is also an option (in app preferences) to copy the direct link to the clipboard.

Perfect for screenshots.

Recently Clouds menubar icon shows a weird behaviour. It places itself above the menubar of the current application, if the menubar gets to short on my 13" Macbook.

See the following screenshot:

Happens frequently. Quitting and restarting Cloud helps shortly, but eventually the behaviour reoccurs.

None of the other menubar apps I have installed does this, so I assume it must be related to Cloud.

Has anyone else seen or experienced this?

Giving the app a 5-star rating nonetheless for its otherwise supreme functionality and hoping for a fix.
