Being a longtime Eudora user looking for something to replace it, I thought I would try PostBox Express, and maybe the full version later. It looks good and there are many useful features, but I have to say that I am disappointed.
1. For a gmail account, every time I did something, like saving a draft document or sending a message, a window came up showing the interaction with Google. Annoying!
2. The Sent Mail folder shows 4 messages as unread - I suppose that is what it means. But how do I find the unread messages amongst the 100 messages there? Maybe they should be bolded, but they are not.
3. Messages I send appear in All Mail but with nothing to indicate whether they are messages I sent or messages I received.
4. Just because Apple does it doesn't mean it is right. Displaying just people's names is not always helpful. If people have multiple e-mail addresses, you need to see the actual address. In this case, the only way to get the e-mail address is to click on the name when the message is open. This brings up a black window that is only visible while you stay there. Click anywhere else and it disappears. Try to right click on the e-mail address to Copy it, and the person gets inserted as the recipient in a new message. That's not what I wanted to do!!!
When I had system difficulties with an iMac that wouldn't go away, I downloaded Postbox Express. It's easy to use, automatically imports your Mail settings, and seems extremely stable. In fact, there's a good chance that Postbox Express may replace Mail for me. It's ideal if you're accessing your email from home...and did I mention that this slimmed-down version of Postbox is free? We have a winner here.
Don't let the Express in Postbox Express fool you, this is a very capable and well-rounded email app. I had grown tired of Apple Mail continuously asking me for my password throughout the day because it wasn't playing nice with AOL's IMAP server. Switching to Postbox Express alleviated that problem and it has never happened again. Postbox Express imported all of my settings from Apple Mail painlessly. The tabs feature is pretty nifty and something I did not know an email app would have because I never saw the need but now I would miss the feature if I didn't have it. One thing I did not like about the program is when it opens up it automatically takes you to a tab touting the pay version of Postbox and encouraging you to upgrade instead of showing your inbox, but poking around their support site I found a way to disable this tab. I highly recommend this program and plan on switching to it permanently on both of my Macs.
I have to agree, this application is really great and it's free. I've been using Thunderbird for a while now, but this Mail client just works, nicely done!
I have been LOVING Postbox Express! I use it to check a few accounts and it handles them with ease. Previously I used Thunderbird and while the 3.x version is nice, it is slower and occasionally exhibited odd behavior and would produce errors. Postbox Express is faster and has a cleaner GUI. Growl support and a stable application for free! I'm going to check out the paid version to see what I'm missing. Nicely done!
As a student I find it fantastic that the folks over at Postbox Inc have decided to release a free version of their really wonderful email client. It has a very nice UI and it doesn't lack any features for the normal student/user. Someone has said that it uses 143MB of memory. In my experience I have yet to see it use over 65MB which isn't that much considering that Safari uses 356MB of memory.
Overall a very impressive email client
Well, I try it to find out whether it allows to not only get messages but to display them in Quicklook…
(Thunderbird manages the first, but not the second one, as far as I know)
they claim "Postbox Express tightly integrates with the Mac, including the Address Book, iCal, Spotlight, Quicklook, and productivity applications […]"

I went to rebuild the messages and came back the next day and postbox was still working away. I know I have a lot of messages but I don't think it should take this long.

Sorry, PostBox needs a lot of work to be useful.
