I used to use Mathcad in the 1990s on my mac and have been looking for a program with similar functionality. Basically, Solution works similarly to a pad of paper and pencil since one can write notes and equations and they are all visible. Also, I can save multiple files, whereas basic calculators don't save anything. Unlike trying to do this in a spreadsheet program, one can see one's equation and the answers all at the same time. I find it much easier to use and better suited for straightforward tasks when I need to include calculations. Compared to something like Mathcad, Solutions is not as flexible since Mathcad was a lot like a word processor with built in math capabilities.

Besides using Solutions like a scratch pad, I've also used it when I have to use "Word" and include my backup calculations. I do all my calculations and have reference notes in my "Solutions" file, type in the results in the word document, and include a print out of my Solutions file in the appendix of my word document. Even when I don't need something for a formal report, Solutions is just easier to do basic math, better than a spreadsheet or a traditional calculator program. I've found Solutions to be an excellent solution for my needs.

I downloaded the latest version 1.0 from the developer site and am writing from my experiences with that version. I don't know why that version did not get posted here. I've had no problems with the software and like it very much. I have not used any graphing yet. I'd recommend it highly for anyone who is looking for easy-to-use software that lets you keep notes that include lots of math calculations.

Get version 1.0 from the website. It's freeware now and will remain freeware as per the blog post.

I'll recommend the developer if he has no plans of updating the program (as per his blog post) then he should opensource it. let the community develop it.

From looking at the stale blog entries, and given that the app I downloaded from their website is already expired, I assume they are no longer in operation.

Too bad; a graphing app like this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for.

As of Apr 20th, the developer still hasn't corrected the problem with expired version. I downloaded the latest version 0.9.9 Alpha and all I get is a message saying that this version is expired. This has been going on for months. Makes me wonder how much importance the developer gives to this program and how committed they are to solving bugs.

Assuming the developer is actually alive.

Tried to download and use this and you just get a message that "this version has expired"

It appears from their web site that the alpha version expired on 1st Dec 2010. (It now being 18 Jan 2011)

This could be cool. But anyone hoping to make a great program in this field should study the user interface of LiveMath Maker (formerly Theorist) which is an amazing program that is still available and still works as well as ever. I did much of the routine calculations in Theorist around 1988-1990 and I still pull it up from time to time. It's the ability to grab pieces of your expressions and move them around on screen that is so cool. Rearranging, solving, etc., can all be done the way you are accustomed to working on a sheet of paper, but all of the grunt works is done for you and without mistakes.
