Watts overview

Watts provides MacBook battery management and calibration assistance. It's a menu-bar app which, apart from the usual battery information (power source used, current battery charge and remaining time), provides advanced data to obtain the maximum performance of your MacBook battery.

Your battery needs to be calibrated from time to time to keep the onscreen battery time and percent display accurate, and to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. Watts features an intuitive calibration assistant that will guide you through the process of calibrating your battery. The calibration scheduling can be adjusted for your needs, and even postponed if you want. Calibration data is automatically logged, so you can see the history of your battery status. Watts looks similar to the Mac OS battery icon menu, and provides some extra options like vertical battery icon and more. Watts monitors you battery status constantly and provides you with information and notifications to help you using your MacBook battery properly. Watts provides detailed information on the battery capacity, charge cycles and health. It also stores your battery data regularly, so you can check its evolution during time.

Features:
  • Watts provides detailed in-app help, everything is clearly explained
  • Works on any MacBook model (MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro)
  • Supports Retina display
  • Only for OS X 10.11 El Capitan or later

Calibration of a battery itself as was in early days promoted is bad for a Li-ion battery. The electronics can be "calibrated" by doing a SMC reset.

Hmh… this can be done in Terminal. Easy. Or do it this way: Let the battery drain, wait at least 5 h, then charge it up to 100 %. This is what Apple says.

Does not work on Mavericks. It worked fine on previous OS X releases. The developer (Binary Tricks) does not respond to my emails. Too bad, I have to look somewhere else.

Over a month ago (as of 23 December 2013) I'd contacted Binary Tricks on an ongoing issue I'd been experiencing. I'm *still* waiting for a reply. Having recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks I noticed another quirk in its behavior, the timely reminder to calibrate. It requires 5 hours of uninterrupted rest before plugging the power cord in. It got almost 10 and still sent up the alert that the power plugin had been premature. Looks like I'll be searching for a replacement, especially considering the unresponsiveness of Binary Tricks. A shame.

Used prior versions happily for two years. With 1.3.3 have same problem as other users seem to e having – it no longer appears in the menu bar, and is thus inaccessible. Support replied once to my email about the issue with apologies for being slow to respond ("making a holiday"), and requesting a bit more info about my system. I have replied twice with the information but have had no further response. Can't give it a rating if I can't use it. Too bad. I rather liked the app.

I'm overall very happy with this application, I just miss two features: 1. I don't want anything in the menu bar, there should really be an option to disable the icon; 2. If I wanted something in the menu bar, the icon would be more than enough, I do not want to see any percentage (if we had the option to disable the icon completely, this could be achieved with the OS standard functionality). Hope to see an update addressing these points soon!

Downloaded for the first time today. Fired it up, blocked an outgoing connection by the app in Little Snitch, and it quit. App no longer launches now (nothing happens) so straight in the trash.

Still not fixed in version 1.0.9: "Calibration process not detected correctly when the MacBook starts with a power up after Step 5". Had to find and delete the Calibrations History log file (thanks, Cocoatech) before Watts would stop perstering me for a new calibration, 1 day after the last one. Please fix.
