What good is a sync server if we have TweetMarker?

Expensive. But it is currently the best. Personally, I use the free version as I don't find the ads to be that disrupting, well not for the sake of $20 anyway.

I think Echofon is the best Twitter client I have used. I have tried many different clients, but I always come back to this app. It's simple, lightweight and it doesn't have useless features.

It's not so much about being greedy as it is about miscalculating the price of software. 20 bucks for a twitter client is just quite a miscalculation.

I guess you have a point. While Echofon might be cutting edge, there is no way it is THAT much better than some of the free clients to justify 20 dollars. The dev can keep his product as far as I am concerned.

Don Trammell: You DO know that the developer offers free functionality in this app ($20 to remove ads), plus has a free version, Echofon Lite, on the Mac App Store, right? All available for people like you.

Accusing Naan Studio of being clueless and greedy (while we have Microsoft, Adobe, Intuit and others) is unfair and uncalled for.

Indie developers need to pay the bills just like you do, and a business model that offers only free products is not sustainable.

I have no connection to the developer, just getting tired of this "only if it's free" attitude people have.

some may baulk at the price but this really is the best twitter client I've come across and yes like few others here I've tried out lots of different apps.

It has near complete keyboard shortcuts, enough to get by 90% of the time without ever moving your cursor but sadly lacking in the search tab.

there are a lot of unusual features for a Mac twitter client

it supports tweet conversation views, in app displaying of full twitter profiles, tweets, followers, following, lists and listing and starred favourites. that's in all profiles, in your own profile it also has a tab for retweets giving you further tabs for retweets made by your followers, made by you AND your own tweets retweeted by others (sadly it doesn't tell you who did it). more unique features include ssl for all requests (secure) and real time streaming so no more refreshing or waiting around for tweets to arrive. It also tells you in the timeline when you have new followers and when your tweets have been fav'd

I can't really comment on list support as it's not something I personally use but it does support bit.ly url shortening and it's accounts, plixi and twitpic for image uploading but a wide range of services for image and video are also supported for popup viewing. There are enough options (growl, dock, menubar and kb shortcut to show etc) to suit most if not all users workflows without being in the way.

The big feature/gripe is the unread tweet sync, it only works with the iPhone counterpart (which doesn't do it for me) but is probably the reason for the price. I would love to see a tiered pricing scheme, one price to remove the ads and another amount that enables the sync, opening up the app to all potential customers, matching the competition but with the current price of $20 I have to pay for a feature that I'll never use, just to remove ads.

took a bit of searching but nothing comes close to this, I'm thankful that I could use it all I like before paying such an amount.

There is a free ad supported version available for download here,

It just places a small twitter post into your timeline every so often.

Wholeheartedly agree! Have a sense of proportion. There are an abundance of free Twitter clients (ad-free) and then twitter.com (which is the only place I've that allows the modification of certain profile attributes). I'd say this client may, may be deserving of its price if it didn't rely on twitter.com at all, but it doesn't. You still need to consult the website for certain bio related features...

I'd have to say the developers are expressly greedy and this client serves to take advantage of the stupid, ignorant, or filthy rich... or all of the above.

Just ridiculous that people would pay this much for something so average. The client bleeds your information to Naan Studios and other 3rd party marketing agencies, there are a lot of graphical glitches (look at the screen shot, you can see the line on the scrollbar bezel (the client is riddled with those)...

All in all, I honestly don't see how they can sit there with a straight face and charge so much...

@Wwwillz - that line on the scrollbar is to denote a mention in the timeline, and is one of the many clever features tucked away in this app. Just sayin'.

Nice twitter client that fits right in with Mac OSX.
I looked at over 20 twitter clients and none suited me to well, but Echofon was different. The second I opened it I knew that it was going to stay for a long time. The fact that it supports bit.ly URL shortening and can open images/movies directly without the need to open a webbrowser is a nice feature for me.

PS: The macupdate screenshot is from a old version, the new interface looks a bit different.

Seems like a good program but I wish there was a way of changing the background where the Timeline & everything else shows, as the default white background is too glaring for my eyes. If it had the same options like Twitterrific where you could change from a "Light" or "Dark" background, it would be better IMHO.

Echofon has a unique drawer interafce that is used for supplementary tasks such as viewing a user's profile, timeline, favorites, followers etc. It is also used for people search. This helps you keep focus on the main timeline while pulling up other information as needed.
