Apptivate... There are a lot of applications that would be better if you could assign a system wide hotkey for them. This is where Apptivate comes into the picture.

Apptivate lets you assign a system wide shortcut for any application, script file or other file on your system for easy access any time. Simply launch Apptivate, select an application or any other file, choose a key combination, and there you have it! Instant access any time. You can also take a quick peek at any application by pressing and holding the hotkey. When the hotkey is released, the application is hidden.
What's New
Version 2.0.2:
  • "Re-launching" Apptivate while it's running opens the main window (or the preferences window if the menubar icon is hidden).
  • Added a preference to allow overwriting system shortcuts. This should fix the problem some people have been having with F14 and F15.
  • It's no longer necessary to hover an item to see the hotkeys while holding the Option key.
  • Pressing Enter when in the hotkeys view of an item brings you back to the list.
  • Items are saved more often.
  • It's now possible to order the items by name.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause keys not to work. This might fix the problem with the i-key not working; if it doesn't, please contact us.
Version 2.0.2:

  • Added a preference to allow overwriting system shortcuts. This should fix the problem some people have been having with F14 and F15.
  • It's no longer necessary to hover an item to see the hotkeys while holding the Option key.
  • Pressing Enter more...

App does exactly what it says, is reasonably priced, and the developer responded to my queries. Highly recommended if you spend a lot of time at the screen. For example, I toggled F6 to be my browser shortcut and it saves me so much time.

Is there any way to remove the menu bar icon? I've got all my shortcuts in place and don't need to add modifications, and now the menubar icon is just taking up space.

As for the app itself, it is excellent, does what it says and does it well.

Apptivate is a fast, stable app. It does exactly what it says, and it does it quickly. Unfortunately, the UI is a bit clunky and you can't delete an item from your list once you've added it. You can delete a hotkey just fine, but the app remains to clutter up your list. Still, it's a minor annoyance and has quickly made itself indispensable.

Well, I was ready to support them since I've been using Apptivate for quite some time. But I'm not sure if 2.0 adds any value... clear case of losing a customer for now because I can't try out the new version.
Seriously, holding Option just to get a serious list, which appears to contain only 3 instead of 8 entries? As soon as they add some proper window/pref pane to organize the short cuts I'm bought.

Does it exactly what it promises. No delays - crucial advantage over full-fledged launchers such as Quicksilver.

Only minor issue I found is kind of an : it does not restrict the shortcuts at all.
So, you can assign 'A' to an app.

Incredibly simple to use, and performs its task flawlessly - super fast application launching and (if selected in the preferences) hiding. Runs in the task bar instead of as a Preference Pane, which can take up more visual space than necessary IMHO, but I'd still give it 4.5 stars just for sheer simplicity and usefulness.

Thank you for putting the shortcuts in the listing! And I notice you fixed the bugs where apps are accidentally hidden even though the prefs says "no"; and the "about" box not displaying. I can't recommend this app enough. Thank you for the great work!

This app was exactly what I was looking for to replace my much-beloved iKey. iKey, a PowerPC app, was bogging down my Intel iMac pretty badly. I've finally had it and searched for a worthy replacement and I found Apptivate. Its interface is simple and unintrusive. It does its thing fast and well. The only things I would like to add are: the ability to "expand" the shortcut list so I don't have to scroll; show the shortcut key right next to each item (ala normal menu commands) so I don't have to click on it to see it; add shortcuts for tasks such as "type today's date", etc. Overall this app is a must-have for anyone looking for a lightweight app launcher.

Some script files' scripts may need to be modified to include the "activate" command near the beginning of run handlers so that they become frontmost when triggered. It's a scope thing. But I was quite pleased to discover that Apptivate does indeed trigger script files, not just scripts saved as applications.

The site has been down for some days.
I hope Tim gets it back up. It seems to sell well and it's so close to be fully functional.
