MacKeeper was an Official Sponsor of the MacWorld | iWorld 2011 and 2012 expo. Check out the YouTube channel and see what actual industry professionals and real users at the MacWorld expo say about MacKeeper? These are real people and not "Self Proclaimed Experts" trolling comments. See for yourself http://www.youtube.com/MacKeeperTV
Interesting to see the ratings of real people at MacWorld; 1.5 stars.
The comments are also consistent with the low ratings:
"I recommend avoiding this program like the plague."
"THIS SOFTWARE IS CRAP! And so is their Customer Support"
And all this is consistent with the low ratings that existed here at Macupdate before the flood of "paid" reviews.
No doubt that in the near future they'll start positive glowing comments and high ratings there as well.
The Apple Discussions are no different than posting comments here and any anonymous person or registered user can say whatever they want. Just because it is on the public forum posted by anonymous users and self labeled experts does not allow any more credibility than you would find on any other domain. MacKeeper has 15,000,000 downloads and a less than 1% refund rate. Just accept the fact that educated Mac users are among them and move on guys.
"Astroturfers are most often highly paid lobby groups or political operatives, who act at the behest of an organization or individual with a stake in the successful outcome of the astroturf campaign. A successful astroturf campaign can sometimes emerge into a genuine "grassroots" movement and most astroturf campaigns are not discovered and/or discredited until long after the campaign is over."
As a Certified Apple Tech, I have personally seen this software wreak havoc on customers computers, slowing down the system to a complete crawl. I have found there is a setting called something to the effect of "Real Time System Monitoring". With that setting checked, it uses roughly around 200% of the systems processor. With it unchecked, the system runs normally. Even with that setting checked or unchecked, I would still not run or recommend this software to anyone. It's completely unnecessary, and like over posts have mentioned, there are many better and FREE alternatives out there. Onyx or ClamXav to name a few.
Free is nice, but MacKeeper has partnered with Avira and MacKeeper uses their Virus Database and safe-browsing technology. So, using the technology of one of the Top 10 Security Internet Firms or just a "Free Bargain" to protect your premium Mac....? It does not slow your system at all and this has been tested and posted so many times. Are you downloading torrents at the same time and using the first beta version of MacKeeper or something? If not, then your claims are totally false.
Mike101, so your basically saying that I'm a lier. I'm an Apple Certified Technician, I have personally seen MacKeeper compleatly bog down many of our customers computers, (most of witch are old people who don't know any better). None of witch are torrenting, and I'm sure most of them got sucked into your devious marketing ploy.
I have seen many instances where MacKeep uses close to 200% of the CPU. And we have plenty of documentation to prove it.
Wether or not MacKeeper has partnered with Avira or featured at MacWorld, doesn't make it a good piece of software.
While there are a few malware or trojans that pop up now and then on the Mac, they are quickly patched by Apple or the developer of the software that is cause of the exploit. As long as you stay up to date on your System and software, there is really no need for programs like MacKeeper. But if you must have something, like a mentioned before, there are many BETTER and FREE alternatives out there. OnyX, ClamXav, Sophos, LCC, etc.
Mike101, you ether work for MacKeeper or a paid advertiser. You are the lier. I have nothing to benefit from posting this, I'm only spreading the truth.
I can understand many of the positive reviews. (If they're not paid) they come from people who don't know about computers, about Macs, about free/better alternatives, etc.
MacKeeper seems to be great for those who are completely ignorant.
Who in their right mind would pay for this? In spite of the glowing reviews, the software has a history of being mediocre, buggy, and unnecessary.
Their marketing reminds me of spammers: Reach millions of people, annoy them, and if just a few of them make a purchase it's good business.
I've used MacKeeper and would never buy it. I'd be scared just to install it again in my system. Half a star is a generous rating.
It's crazy! Did you see what's new in this version : "animated tooltips" for our convenience (LOL), possibility of "customize columns". MacKeeper is a company which soil the web with it's tons of advertising everywhere (disable Adblock and you will see). No seriously it's crazy and I prefer to give money to developers like Joel Barriere (OnyX) or Northern Softworks (Lion Cache Cleaner) than to society like ZeoBIT which win a lot of money while their software is ridiculous (and difficult to uninstall...). An advice : go your way (or try the demo before!).
still same old crap, even version 2.2 slowed my Mac down to a crawl when I tested it. Lucky I was able to remove all the files it installed as like Bleech_Jef the uninstaller missed quite a few
Actually, as has been entirely verified in this thread by ZeoBIT customers, the developer IS BUYING reviews of MacKeeper by way of offering a free upgrade for version 1 owners to version 2. Sadly, ZeoBIT is a paying advertiser at MacUpdate, explaining why nothing has been done to stop the review BOMBING. The result of course is duped new customers for ZeoBIT. I have never seen more offensive marketing on the Mac platform. Shameful abuse. That's why I call MacKeeper 'ABUSEWARE'.
Derekcurrie -- developers are allowed to ask their users to post reviews of their app on MacUpdate. This is the same for Amazon and any other major retailer. MacUpdate staff verified that the reviews are from unique IP addresses and that the users are indeed happy customers of MacKeeper.
@Joel Mueller: All of us who find review BOMBING offensive here at MacUpdate have also verified, as I already stated, via actual MacKeeper customers who have posted here, that ZeoBIT did not only ask for reviews to be posted.
ZeoBIT * P A I D * (paid) for reviews to be posted here and at [the competitive website that shall not be named] with the payment being A COPY OF MacKeeper 2.0.
And please don't pretend any semantic arguments. A payment of a software program, being an upgrade or not, is a plain old payment. THAT is what's OFFENSIVE. Definitive DUH Factor @Joel Mueller. I regret your enablement of this fiasco with your pointless comment.
Totally agree with Derekcurrie on this one, Zeobit reviews can't be trusted, which consequently means MacUpdate reviews can't be trusted when it's that easy to skew the results. Same thing happened to TripAdvisor
Joel Mueller, I think you are either naive or choosing to remain in denial. Take a look at the profiles and the behavior of the favorable "reviewers" of MacKeeper. Consider this: outside of the Apple App Store, MacUpdate is one of the premier web sites to find new Apple software. So why is it that these hundreds of "reviewers" come here, register, leave a glowing review of MacKeeper, yet NEVER COME BACK AGAIN?
Don't you think it is the least bit strange that these hundreds of devoted Mac users find NOTHING else interesting about your site? That they're not even the least bit interested in trying out some of the excellent software (much of it free) available at MacUpdate?
You've got the data. Look at it, and ask yourself: would hundreds of real MacKeeper users all act exactly the same way? You're being conned. Perhaps you choose to deny it because you like Zeobit's ad revenue. But it is painfully obvious to your legitimate users (who have real profiles and real downloading histories) what is going on.
@Tim, yes we do have the data and this is fairly common behavior with many members. Developers often ask or even incentivize users to write positive reviews of their apps on the MAS and MacUpdate. Authors do the same on Amazon.
It's true that many of those people came to the site probably just to write the review and will never come back but that doesn't discredit what they have to say, or that their opinions as a legit user of the app are representative of their experiences. I think those are valuable communications.
As far as trying to connect Zeobit's ad spend at MacUpdate to its content policy, that's a far stretch. MacUpdate has gone as far as to continually limit the amount of ad spend on on the site, request revisions to their ad creative and request review and continual improvement of the app so that Zeobit is going "more" in a better direction....fixing the uninstalling issues is a good example of this.
I was curious why this app gets low and high ratings for the same version. So installed it together with fseventer to see what it actually is installing. What I can already acknowledge: It installs a lot of files in not common places. One file was a kext file which can be very dangerous and can be mostly considered as very suspicious.
Ok, tried some features and it clearly does not do more then other free apps as iTweax and Onyx. MacKeeper on the other hand is in my humble experience not save for both experts and novices. It just doesn't feel right.
Now uninstalling this app is difficult if you did not trace what it actually installed. The included uninstaller does a VERY BAD job in uninstalling, in fact it lets many installed files untouched - including the kext file! That is very alarming imo and the company should take care of this !!!
Does this app delivers some value? In my tests, it does not. I mean, all available features minus the Anti-Theft can be found in trusted apps as iTweax and Onyx. Both proven and save to use apps.
My advice: do not install/try this app if you do not know how to uninstall every single file.
Conclusion:
The low rating are correct. The high ratings are not.
Which kext file? I thought I properly removed every single bit of this software. I see no kext file noted on Apple discussion groups or elsewhere on the net for removing kext files. Just prefs and launch agents/daemons. I want every last bit of this off my MacBook.
I like the easy one step file cleanup options. I have seen a lot of negative reviews but I have had no trouble using this software. everyone uses different things for different tasks. I have been satisfied with this.
