OptimUSB overview

OptimUSB is an application that keeps your USB and memory cards optimized. You just need to run OptimUSB before ejecting your USB drive. Any Mac or Windows temporary files get deleted (.DS_Store, .Trashes, .Spotlight-V100, Thumbs.db, etc.). OptimUSB then automatically ejects your drive. Now, your USB drive is clean, optimized and ready to be removed safely.

Remember that OS X generates temporary files every time you connect your USB drive. Run OptimUSB each time you eject.

When you delete a file from a USB drive on OS X, it is moved to the trash, leaving a blind copy on the USB drive. You could completely empty the trash, but you would lose any other files in the trash as well. That is why deleting items does not help you regain space. With OptimUSB, you can keep your USB drive optimized and regain the actual disk space.

It gets the job done, but it performs rather slow although using a super fast Sandisk Extreme Pro usb 3.0 stick on a MBP 2014.

This seems to function almost exactly like Eject for Windows, a free program that deletes the hidden file on USB sticks. Having on the menu is interesting, but I've been used to having Eject for Windows on my Dock like the trash. It will clean and eject my disk in one motion.

After transferring photos off my SD card, this app efficiently deletes just those hidden Mac files and ejects the card. Keeps the card working at optimum speed, back in the camera.

I agree with the other commenters that this is somewhat misleading. Moreover, this can be done for Free if you know a bit of UNIX: cd /Volumes/[drive name] rm -Rf .* Then eject (or use the umount command while you're at it, heh). Note that if your drive's name contains spaces, you'll either need to enclose the whole path in quotes: cd "/Volumes/name with spaces" or you'll need to 'escape' the spaces by putting backslashes before them: cd /Volumes/name\ with\ spaces (This prevents Terminal from thinking that the spaces are there to separate three arguments: '/Volumes/name', 'with', and 'spaces', letting it know that the spaces are actually all part of one thing instead.)

The previous informed comments are all correct. This app DOES NOT "optimize" your flash drive. This is my vote that MacUpdate change the short description to not use the word "optimize" and that they overrule the developer description and remove any reference of optimization. TL;DR - App deletes .DS_Store; doesn't optimize storage; misleading description; waste of time.

No requirement whatsoever to buy this app. If you want to delete DS Files etc. there are plenty of free apps on MU to allow you to do so. $11.99 is a lot of dough for such specific functionality. Homeworld pretty much nailed it in his comment....

I think everyone below has failed understand the purpose for this utility. OS X generates these hidden files for thumbnails, folder colours etc and while they are hidden in OSX, they are visible on a windows machine. This utility is designed to remove these files so the drive is clean for a windows machine. If you dont use your usb stick on a windows machine, then you dont need this app. I dont understand why people download software "just to see what it does" and then write reviews not even understanding the programs purpose....

This isn't optimization. This is deleting some hidden files. Optimization usually refers to rearranging the bits to cluster and defragment files and to cluster and defragment free space -- though how much of a real-world impact that would have on USB memory stick performance anyway (which, remember, this utility doesn't do), is debatable. Moreover, these tiny files are just going to be recreated the next time one mounts the USB memory device. It's ultimately a futile exercise, since the reclaimed space is only "there" when the device is NOT mounted, and therefore unavailable anyway.

Not even close to useful. Those temp files are there for a reason and take little space. You can take those 12$ to buy another USB drive, that is what I would do.

Not only is this app not required on Mac OS, but the title and description are highly misleading too. It does NOT optimize e.g. defragment) thumb drives as the title would suggest - it does simply delete a few hidden files that do neither take up any large space nor give away any private information.

I do not see/feel any difference using my flashstick with or without this tool. Anyone has good results? Anyways, in most occasions it is important to format your flash the correct way. imo tools like this will not resolve a slow flashstick.

When I tried an older version of this (sorry, it was just a few months ago and I don't remember which version it was) it deleted a folder called .rockbox off my USB device. I reckon it works by deleting everything it find that starts with a dot. This is pretty disastrous. In my case it meant I had to re-install the Rockbox operating system on my MP3 player, and I had lost all my customisations. Many UNIX-style utilities store user preferences in files that start with a dot. Websites generally have a .htaccess file, and other similarly named files are possible. My advice is steer well clear of this utility, unless someone can confirm that the new version no longer does this. The only safe way to clean up a USB stick is to remove specific files, and this list should really be user-configurable.

Flash drives would be even more optimized if they were formatted correctly.
