The problem is they all work reasonable but don't do everything wanted.
Amnesty does not seem to have been developed for quite a while now but still works on SL but has some funny glitches.
Widgetrunner does not render all widgets very well e.g the bbc news widget ends up with a scroll bar at the bottom
Widget does have one great advantage and that is that it can push the widgets to the back ground.
There are other free widget on desktop utilities out there but none do quite what I want with ease of use.
desktop widgets, not top floating etc have been in demand for a long time, when are apple going to wake up to the fact that widgets could be a lot more popular if they just added a few extra bells and whistles.

But ONLY WidgetRunner and MachDesktop let you keep the widget on the Desktop Layer. With the other solutions, the Widgets FLOAT on top of the other windows on your Desktop. This is ANNOYING for many widgets.
But unlike MachDesktop, you can specify on a widget by widget basis whether the widget will FLOAT on top of other Desktop Windows or not. This gives you great control. e.g. You may want most of your widgets to be BELOW application windows like Safari except for one or two like a widget displaying your current song playing in Tunes.
All in all, I have found WidgetRunner to be the BEST Solution for running Apple Wodgets on your desktop. But it is NOT perfect, some widgets will not run properly. (But all the other solutions I have tried have this problem too!)

Right click on the widget to set how it floats, stumbled on this as there seems to be no read-me.
Now how to hide the dock icon?

I simply assumed that they would work. But they don't. Pity !
The issue is that this application has to emulate the Apple Dashcode environment, which turns out to be somewhat tricky to do perfectly.
For anyone who is interested, this is an open source application and I'd love some support developing it -- please see:
