I'm giving this product a one-star review. Here's why. FLV Spider allows you to save flash videos, but all the while it saves them in its cache. If you want the video deleted from the cache, it wants you to pay for the pro version! What if you download something that you don't want others to run across? You have to PAY THEM to delete a file from your own computer? I would call this unethical at best. Extortion at worst.

If you're in a situation where FLV spider has video files it won't let you delete, do the following.

1. Open terminal and type "lsof" (minus quotes.)

2. Search through the output (You may want to copy the output from terminal into a text editor.) for a path starting with "/private/var/folders/" After that, you'll see what appear to be many random characters, but toward the end, you'll see "/com.mp3flv.flvspider/" At the very end of the path, you'll see ".flv"

3. Copy the entire path. It will probably look something like this:
/private/var/folders/5x/n00hxp2rddz0d93ieud50x_h0000gn/T/com.mp3flv.flvspider/cap/templwJi.flv

4. Then, using terminal, type "rm" and paste your whole path to the file. Then press enter. That will remove the cached file that FLV spider wants you to pay to be able to remove.

I'm disgusted by this. And I can tell you this: anyone who would make their software work in this manner will never see one penny of my money. >:-(

First: I'm sorry if you don't know what does it mean "ShareWare". And probably you also don't know what is the EULA too... At least you definitely have accepted it without reading.

Second: I can suggest a simpler approach to clear the cache - just reboot your Mac.

I'm quite familiar with the concept of shareware and I'm completely in favor of developers offering different features in their products based on whether the user has decided to pay for it.

However, I stand by my opinion. The ability to delete a file from my own computer is not something I believe I should have to pay for, shareware and EULAs notwithstanding. I'm very interested in what argument you would present to the contrary. Why do you think that making the "delete" function available only in the "pro" version is a good idea and a good way to market your product?

The experience left a bad taste in my mouth and, as a result, I will not be doing business with you. If you're cool with that, that's fine. But I would imagine I'm not alone.

Additionally, your argument that rebooting to delete the temp file(s) is a "simpler approach," would be an inaccurate assumption in my case (and others, I would imagine.) My computer acts as a server for several users both in my building as well as others via the 'net. I can't reboot on a whim without potentially affecting others.

Looks like a flame is beginning...

>>The ability to delete a file from my own computer is not something I believe I should have to pay for

Did we protect the temp files in any manner from deletion??? You've described the procedure yourself. You even can write a script, if you wish. What do you wish from us after that??? Do you wish a button? OK, no problem. It means you LIKE this software and CONSIDER TO USE IT IN FUTURE. But if so, then (according to the EULA, which you've accepted) you MUST pay for it:
/from the EULA:
3.2. You may use this software according to this free license for evaluation purposes for the period of 30 days./

"evaluation" doesn't assume you will have an ability to use this software endlessly. But you wish just to do it.

>> My computer acts as a server for several users

Wonderful! Then write a script and post it here :) Hope your honor will be satisfied after that :)

Many people answered here, and many of them complained to some _real_ and _significant_ misfunctioning of this software. We can understand these users and we're doing our best to fix any problems, they report about.

Yet a single person appears for three years, who complains for the DEMO VERSION LIMITATION. Do you assume that everything else is fine? If it is then we're just happy!

Capturing RTMP streams isn't working for me. I followed all of the documentation and can see a stream building in Packet Peeper which has the features described in the help file (destination port 1935, source being my computer, etc.) but PP never shows the save dialog title of "Save RTMP Stream As...". It only ever says "Save Stream As...".

But even if I did get a valid stream saved, there seems to be no way for FLV Spider to open it. The menu option in the File menu is completely absent. Is this a Pro-only feature? There is nothing to indicate this in the help file and it looks like the Pro features are normally indicated by a grayed-out menu item.

Has anyone else tried it successfully?

Looks like they did not updated help file!
Help is from version 2! As for me I'm just opening the Spider then opening the browser and click the web video player Play button. It's very important to open the web player AFTER the Spider.
Spider's support guys were very quick and friendly with me, so I'm sure they can help if you'll provide the web page URL of your video.

As for Packet Peeper, it was all for version 2.
This option is removed in new version. As I believe it is not required, because v3 does all the same natively.

It's great to see that our customers help each other! :) Yes, we apologize, but we did our best to release the new version ASAP. Thus, we didn't updated help files still. The only major update is required -- is to REMOVE everything concerning Packet Peeper, etc. FLV Spider 3.0 supports all the same natively. Really you don't need to perform any specific actions to grab RTMP. Just do all the same as for YouTube videos. No difference.

And of course, please let us know if any URL doesn't work for you. We can't test our software with the whole Internet, hope everyone understand it... We'll do our best to help you.

These URL's were tested among many other:

Deluxe Music (http://deluxemusic.tv/en/)
105 Web TV (http://video.105.net/tv/channel/show/id/44)
CBS News Video (http://www.cbsnews.com/video/)

BEWARE: this app is proposing an online update that destroys the previous version, then it asks for an activation code that was not provided (at least when purchasing version 2) and is pretendedly sent by email (address not recalled nor modifiable) after typing the reference order number. Then, when this reference is typed, the activation code is NOT emailed (at least within hours) and FLV becomes inaccessible.
Once again this developer beats records in terms of security paranoia at the expense of users.

After some hours I have finally received the Activation code. Actually, the delay could be due (quite likely) to my internet provider. To sum, I lost a few hours waiting for the AC but FLV spider responded rapidly and kindly. Good support job ! I only wish they do not change again their update procedure in the future.

This is very interesting opinion!
So, step by step:

>>BEWARE: this app is proposing an online update that destroys the previous version....

Do you know how update usually works? Hope yes. Then why not to backup your existing version if you like it so much? It's just one mouse clock -- just right-click the app and choose "Duplicate" menu item. What's easier?

>>it asks for an activation code that was not provided

... and there is "Get Code" button, which takes you to a very simple procedure.

>>and is pretendedly sent by email (address not recalled nor modifiable)

Yes, because it's your address, specified in the order. Just do not specify a junk email address when you make a purchase. We never send spam to your address. Be sure -- we do our money in another way. And we hope you like our way :)

>>Then, when this reference is typed, the activation code is NOT emailed (at least within hours) and FLV becomes inaccessible.

Just two thoughts: 1) backup (see above) and 2) We're sorry, but we can't control your mailbox activity. The email is sent immediately from our web server, no doubts here.

>>Once again this developer beats records in terms of security paranoia at the expense of users.

"security paranoia" is to beware of spam from software developers. Just keep your activation code in a secure place. In this case you'll be free from any emailing in future. To enter your activation code again - this is the maximum of what you will need to do in future. And even not every software version update will require it.

Happy 2012 to everyone!

Could you please do not spam here? The software mentioned, has no relation to this topic, as it is LOSSY VIDEO PROCESSOR, whereas FLV Spider is LOSSLESS processor. It captures and saves all videos in their ORIGINAL QUALITY. The only case, when lossy processing is used is iPod export, as iPod supports only very restricted video format, which is not used in the Internet.

Replying to all those, who complains for inability of some videos downloading - FLV Spider works with ANY websites, like YouTube.com, where live streaming is not used for the video delivery. You can easily understand if you're watching a live stream or not. Just take a look at the progress indicator of the web player. If you see that downloaded percentage is going ahead of the playback position, then this is not a live stream. In such case FLV Spider can be used. Vast majority of social websites do not use live streaming.

As for problems with video capturing in version 2.0.2 and 2.0.3, those problems were caused by new versions of Flash Player, where Flash Video was cached in a different way. Latest Flash Player 10.2 also has changes, which should be reflected in the FLV Spider. New FLV Spider 2.0.4 works with Flash Player 10.2 correctly.

FLV Spider was tested with both Safari, FireFox and Chrome and works with all of them.

We appreciate any bug/problem reports, they will help us to keep the software up to date.

Thanks to all users of FLV Spider!

Version 2.0.3 is more than a "minor user interface improvement", as it allows again multiple simultaneous downloads. As a result the add which were downloaded INSTEAD of the movie sought are no longer a fatal nuisance.
I should advice to change asap from version 2.0.2 to 2.0.3, and to do it following the procedure started with the "help" menu. Otherwise, the new version may not worked as expected.

I used to be satisfied with this app for the .flv files (note that unlike suggested in the presentation, FLV does not work with other frequent short streaming movie formats like f4v, wmv and mp4). "Satisfied" means that, unlike its competitors, FLVspider was not a total failure with sites other than YouTube.
Unfortunately during the last months there has been less and less websites compatible with FLVspider. Now, FLVS fails with 90% of the sites I am trying to use it in. It can no longer download several movies simultaneously and I have to relaunch it whenever I wish to download another movie. Worse, instead of downloading the film I am viewing, FLVS starts downloading automatically the short add movies surrounding the film I view. The lack of a relevant window preview makes it impossible to see what is actually downloaded. To sum, this app has become such a pain that I prefer using a movie capture app like iShowU.
After testing the latest release (2.0.2) and seen how little the "improvements" were, I guess that the concept of an app that can download the ".flv" movies has definitely been ruined by the sites efforts to impede downloading their streaming films. However, this review was made using the latest Camino version. Perhaps, FLV spider could be less catastrophic with other browsers.

My apologies to the developer--software development does take work, but here's how I download online video using Safari's built in features.
1) click online video to begin playing
2) open Safari Activity window (under the window menu)
3) look for the largest file size, and you should see it progressively loading, for example 4 MB of 38 MB -- click on the item to highlight and then copy that item (command C)
4) go to the downloads window (under the window menu)and paste (command V)

That's it, you will see the video downloading. You can then close the primary window leaving just the download.

FLV Spider is brilliant for accessing .flv clips in almost every site, but it has a completely lousy interface.Concerning FLV.
Lots of important things need to be fixed:
- The preview does not work, a most annoying thing when several clips are downloaded simultaneously (it usually happens because of the adds surrounding the clip to download). The user simply cannot know what the downloading lines in FLV Spider's window are corresponding to. At least, the names of the downloading clips should be recalled in FLV Spider's window.
- The large view does not work most of the time (using a new Mac Book Pro with the latest OS X update and 2G of memory)
- The cursor to view a given part of a downloaded clip does not work at all (remains stuck at the end of the trail)
- A warning/security should prevent stopping prematurely a downloading (eg when a link is accidentally clicked on the same window as the clip being downloaded). At least, it should be possible to complete (not totally reload) an interrupted download.
- A way to avoid downloading the .flv adds surrounding the targeted clip would be most useful.

When a guaranteed credit card payment is used, the seller should not wait until the payment is actually made for sending the PW.

May I ask you to send a bug report instead of spending your time in negative reports writing here? Can you at least tell what is your OS version? This software was tested on several Intel-based Macs (ppc is really unsupported now), in all OS versions starting from 10.4. The only obvious failure reason is Flash plugin disabling. Really, this is not checked, as it is enabled by default. OK, we'll check it.

BTW, try 1.3.0 :-)
