A solid unarchiver, but you're basically paying for eye candy. There are plenty of other utilities that do the same thing for free; the only difference is that Archiver has a better UI. Obviously that's worth something, but $20 seems pretty steep to me.

So how do I unarchive/merge the split files? Even Archiver itself can't extract/merge them.

Does this app let you browse inside archives and only extract specific files without having to extract the whole archive?

Simply the best. Has everything I want in an archiving utility and so much more. It even has an option to create .dmg files. Love it. :D

i thought you said BetterZip was “simply the best.” in fact you raved on and on about BetterZip. Archiver ain’t bad — i got it free a while ago but never use it cause i use BetterZip. If something better than BetterZip comes along i could understand your lack of loyalty — but I’m baffled at your review here. the free The Unarchiver might be a distant 2nd to BetterZip. you review a lot of stuff here at macupdate — don’t make your reviews become meaningless.

I have no "loyalty" to pieces of software, but I guess commenting with "simply the best" on two pieces of similar software makes zero sense. I use whatever comes along that happens to suit my needs at the time, and for a while I was enjoying the simplicity of this app and even though it didn't do as much as BetterZip, the archaic interface of BetterZip was kind of turning me off a bit. I used BetterZip for I have no idea how long, but it's been a while. However, BetterZip just had a gigantic update today and I've since switched back to it. Fell in love with it again. Also liking the new interface. It's been brought very up to date and the new features make me all giddy.

And yes, the Unarchiver is also a great utility.

understood — esp. about the update to BetterZip. The stars are aligned and all is right with the universe again.

I always check out the newcomers and keep an eye on the old ones, but i never lost faith in BetterZip or the genius of the developer.

In many ways, Archiver is faster at decompressing most formats than The Unarchiver -- at least, this is my perception. On the other hand, the formats that Archiver supports are the bare essentials: the tar.* flavors, zip, rar, and maybe a few others. Compared to The Unarchiver, it seems paltry.

Only in the most recent version did Archiver gain support for batch operations. However, Archiver does offer a 1-step conversion feature, rather unique in the field of archivers/unarchivers.

Considering the price difference ($19 vs free for The Unarchiver), it hardly seems worth the price tag. There have been times, however, when none of the archiving tools on my system could correctly handle Shift_JIS (older Japanese) encoded files. None, that is, except Archiver. It has other interesting quirks and features which makes it both a dream and a nightmare.

Good app. Good looking. A file queue would be welcome when we have to deal with a file during another is already being extracted.
A specific icon for split files would be useful to recognize them easier. Thanks.

I just updated my copy and noticed the name changed. So what was wrong with it being called Rucksack? I thought it was a good name and it also differentiated it from the others, now calling it Archiver is confusing and makes the application feel ..meh You went from iArchiver to Rucksack and now Archiver O_o

Another nice feature to have would be checksum verification, using .sfv files.

But I agree the sequential extraction should be fixed first, before adding other features..

Quick bug I came across:
1. Open a large archive that takes a while to extract.
2. Open another.

Expected result:
Newly added extraction is added to extraction queue

Result:
User is presented with Split/Convert/Extract dialog, while running extraction continues to run

Maybe this is by design, but when the running extraction finishes, the dialog for the 2nd extraction disappears and the "drag to destination" dialog for the running (now finished) extraction is presented. This, IMO, creates confusion.

I hope it's clear what happens, let me know if you want me to clarify.
Is there somewhere I can mail for bug reports, instead of posting on MU?

Hi Lopoz,

Thanks for the bug report -- as you suggest the correct behavior would be for the archive to be added to queue.

I'll try to have this fixed shortly.

You can always send us bug reports via our http://creativebe.com/contact.php page (we have dedicated support staff).

Alternatively you can email me directly via philipp @ our company domain.

Thanks Philipp! It's really great to see such good support on Rucksack. I'm convinced it will be the best archiver/extracter around (if that's not already the case).

Did you receive my feature request for adding files/folder to an archive from the Finder right-click menu?

Thanks for the kind words!

I'm afraid I didn't get your email -- did you send it to me directly, or via our support page? If directly please note the spelling of my first name, as it is one of the not-so-common variants of the name.

Regarding the right-click menu: I would love to implement this (I'd be using it all the time myself!) but I believe Apple dropped support for these contextual menu items in Snow Leopard.

As an aside: we had such right-click menu items for two of our other applications (iCombiner and Renamer4Mac) back in the days when we were still targeting Tiger. They proved very popular.

For the successor application of Renamer4Mac, Renamer, we put the functionality into a system menu item but I'm not entirely convinced that this is the best approach.

Another option would be the Services menu, and this is something I'll look into.

If anybody has any suggestions, ideas or thoughts on this please let me know!

The Services menu is what I was referring to, yes. I know HoudahSpot and ClamXav use it for searching/scanning in a specific file/folder.

This page has some good info on the Services Menu in SL, maybe it could prove helpful to you in some way..

The queuing system only works when you open different archives simultaneously. You can't add to queue once an extraction has begun. They need to fix this.
