Email me when discounted:

The qBittorrent project was started in March 2006 to create a lightweight but featureful BitTorrent client that would be multi-platform and very easy to use.

qBittorrent v2 is the closest open source (GNU GPL v2 license) equivalent to µtorrent. qBittorrent is based on Qt4 toolkit and libtorrent-rasterbar.

What's New

Version 3.1.9.1:
  • This is an excuse to produce new builds with an OpenSSL version that isn't affected by the heartbleed bug for Windows and Mac. This bug should only affect the WebUI and only if HTTPS/SSL authentication was enabled.

Requirements

  • OS X 10.6 or later

I just downloaded v3.1.3 SIX TIMES directly from the Sourceforge site, using 3 different mirrors, and this app just will not open; The disc image mounts fine, and I can drag the app to my Apps folder, but it won't open.

I even compared the checksums with the qBittorrent website, and they all matched.

Evidently there's a bug in the newest version, because that's the only app giving me trouble, but that seems unlikely given that the sourceforge site says there were "134,523 Downloads This Week."

I tried to register to post a bug report, but my usernames were taken so I gave up.

The download link above currently downloads 3.0.8, not 3.0.6 as listed.

I just downloaded that version and it opens fine, so I'd suggest downloading from here instead of Sourceforge.

Download disk image files for latest Mac builds from following site:
http://qbittorrent.sourceforge.net/download.php

There are two versions available:
Latest release version: 3.1.9.2
Latest alpha version: 3.2.0 (under active development but usable)

Thus the version you are using is far behind the latest version. The builds of both versions compiled by me with MacPorts Package Manager have been tested under latest Mac OS 10.9.4 without any issue. The alpha version 3.2.0 is stable enough for regular usage in Mac OS 10.9.4.

Thanks, already taken care of.

I downloaded the new version three days ago, then informed MU the listing was out of date and they updated it to 3.1.9.1.

The latest stable version, available via the MU download link, is actually 3.08.

The download link implies that the app is at 3.0.8, but try opening the app in Finder. Click the space bar to reveal the version number (3.0.6).

Cross platform (whether QT, Java, etc) is the antithesis of lightweight. Needless abstraction layers adds libraries, space, and memory, impairs performance, and least common denominator usability.

Lightweight is native code, finely tuned.

In excemple what lightweight is: uTorrent (v1.5.4) ~2.4MB
Transmission (v2.3.3) ~3.8MB - that's real lightweiths.

qBitTorrent is only free - this it ok

i always assumed "lightweight" refers to the impact on system resources, not the app file size. besides, being a qt app, it may have the referred framework included inside the bundle, making it bigger in file size.

For sure, gatovadio!

Unless someone is running a '90s-era Mac, who cares if the app is 5 MB or 50 MB, as long as it isn't a resource-hog?

uTorrent 1.8.4 is 4.5 MB, and Transmission 2.82 is 5.8 MB, so they're growing, too.

You can find the Mac OSX version 2.6.6 here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/qbittorrent/files/qbittorrent-mac/qbittorrent-2.6.6/qbittorrent-2.6.6.dmg/download

Took a bit of time to find it on the developer's site, but it's a stable version. They should at least update their listing here at macupdate!

For open source zealots only. And even then, Transmission is probably the better client.

`Lightweight' is nearly 13MB larger download than Transmission. I assume that it bundles QT and that probably adds a lot substance. I guess lightweight refers to the memory footprint whilst running. QT is pretty ugly too, so perhaps a nicer way of making it cross platform and just as ugly would have been a Java UI to lower the size of the download.
