Ephemeral is a screen saver that draws animated IFS fractals, giving an ever-changing display of complex, natural shapes. It uses OpenCL (a new feature of OS X introduced with Snow Leopard) to harness the power of your GPU to efficiently perform the IFS calculations.

What's New

Version 1.1.2:
  • This release of Ephemeral contains a single fix for a crash on exit problem when running on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

  • Mac OS X 10.6 or later

Just tried this. It's very nice.

However, on my two monitor setup, it only appeared on one monitor. I hope I'm missing something and that two monitors are supported.

One of the reasons I keep away from complex screensavers is because they eat the CPU and heat the computer.

But this will barely uses CPU.

It works brillant with OS 10.8. And its grafik is very good. I love it meanwhile. No conflict with the system and on my iMac the CPU use is very low. A big thanks to the developer!

Love this screen saver in Snow Leopard OSX 10.6 but please remove it before you update to Lion. OSX 10.7 :(
It locks up System Prefs and really upsets the new cat..

Would you be able to re-test with the latest Ephemeral (v1.1.1)? I know that it works on OS X 10.7.

Hi Muryan,

Nice-looking screen saver, runs smoothly on my MacBook1,1 (original Core Duo, GMA 950, 10.6.7), but crashed in 2 circumstances:

- after using Test button, rather than returning to System Preferences, it crashed when I moved mouse

- crashed when I tried Options button

Got a bright red error screen complaining about an inability to initialize OpenCL. I guess my barely 1-year-old iMac is already hopelessly obsolete.

I get the same message. My 27" iMac is 2 weeks old and I'm on 10.6.2.
The screensaver needs to be re-written.

Perhaps you two should try checking the website http://www.muryan.com/ephemeral/index.html. Your iMacs don't support OpenCL.

"Requirements: OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and a GPU compatible with OpenCL (Ephemeral will tell you if it isn't)."

Muryan (Developer)

If you're seeing an error from Ephemeral I'd appreciate it if you could mail me the error code from the message. Also, when Ephemeral gets an error it writes some diagnostics into the system log. So if possible run up Console.app, select "All Messages" on the side, filter by "Ephemeral" and copy and paste the messages into a mail. You can reach me at: support (at) muryan.com. Thanks.

I have an iMac with an ATI Radeon HD 4800 GPU and it's 100% Snow Leopard Compatible as well as OpenCL compatible according to this link, http://tiny.cc/LINK794. But I get the red screen and error as well. I have sent the developer an email, everyone else who wishes to run his screensaver should do so as well.
