What's New
Version 1.4.1:
Fix error launching Xmarks settings
Fix sync error caused by missing baserev
Fix incorrect version number in settings
Fix "unable to get server changes error 0" when cause was removing already-deleted bookmarks
The Firefox and Chrome versions work great but the Safari version is too buggy and crashes quite a bit. Why can't this be an official extension instead of a separate app? Still needs work.
I hesitate to sign up for another syncing service. I just don't like all my stuff out there any more than I can help it. I've got DropBox, however I've been so far unsuccessful in configuring things so just bookmarks get synced, no matter how many tutorials I go through and follow. I'm really hoping DropBox will figure out how to support that function, as they have for 1Password for instance. Although it may be 1Password who's changed their application rather than Dropbox, I guess.
Otherwise, if this is your first entry into the cloud syncing world, perhaps Xmarks is the way to go.
Unfortunately, this product has some significant bugs. Prior to this version, marks for Safari left me with a boatload of duplicate bookmarks. Its merge process is just not working correctly. This release leaves me with no way to sync, as it returns an error 0. I don't have time for this.
TROUBLE HERE, TOO! Several days ago I went to my Safari bookmarks in my toolbar to my "News" folder to cruise some news sites and found all but one missing. I then checked my other toolbar folders and items like "Music" which had a 100 or so bookmarks were all missing—bookmarks I accumulated over years. I did a google search and found out I could retrieve older backups/syncs with Xmarks on the Xmarks website. I went there and found for weeks now that syncs were incomplete. (Meanwhile I am in a total panic at this loss.) Then I found if I replace the plist file with an older version I'd be okay. Thank God for Time Machine! I rarely use it, as I run regular backups, but this allowed me to fetch an earlier version that was complete.
Before doing this I disabled sync with Google Chrome and Firefox, and Safari of course. I replaced the Safari plist and everything is okay again. I do not know if I will ever use Xmarks again. Right now I am not.
My general advice to anyone: Don't just backup your bookmarks on your browsers to a local drive, but also backup your plist.
Version 1.4.1 still has the error 0 problem when trying to replace server bookmarks with local bookmarks. I uninstalled and reinstalled, and had the same error.
A great idea but all I get recently is error 01 can' complete sync. Worse that that is it is right in your face stopping you from doing other MORE important things. I have done all the deleting of file and even started a new account but it is not what it was. It is now a nuisance. Will have to forget it...
From a company perspective, it's worth every penny! :-) Seriously, it allow all of our browsers to stay synced and if you go on the pro version, then we can even sync our ipads and iphones. So if one sales person find a very important website, they just bookmark it and every sales person now has it. We would like to see it catch duplicates upon bookmarking versus having to perform this task through the website.
Very well made and simple app.
I tried QuietRead but found it too was overly complicated for such a simple task.
I'm actually glad this is not an extension. Every time Safari updates it breaks extensions. This is far simpler and straightforward.
BTW Webkit, which Safari is based on is a known memory hog. Making this an extension is only going to make matters worse and end up like Firefox, which often is unusable due to so many extensions.
I love this program, and it was doing it's job excellently, but I had to uninstall it. According to my console log, there was a huge memory leak. It was just eating up a bunch of RAM, and the only way to stop it was to uninstall it, so I'm sad about it.
I could not find a way to contact the company directly (I don't have Premium service) on this problem, so I posted to their forum - but no response as yet.
I've had this for some time, but only recently had a chance to really try it out on a modern system. Synching is incredibly easy, and the icon appears as a simple drop down menu item. Synching bookmarks takes ten seconds.
Absolutely free, works in a snap...can't ask for anything better.
tried to use their Forum to troubleshoot a problem with their site. it wouldn't let me use my valid email address. Gmail worked but I tried to change it and it wouldn't take it. Others had similar problems that were unresolved on their forum after 2 years. Support for this product SUCKS. Not something I want to spend time on. At least with URL Manager Pro, Alco came back from the dead to support his product and customers. Guess that's what you get for free. PASS.
