I'm not able to play the most music of my iTunes lib, because they are converted in m4a formats (typical format if you bought a song in iTunes). My TV (Toshiba) and my DVD Player (Samsung) didn't understand this format.. Only MP3's are working.
Same problem with videos. I have converted my movies for the iOS devices in the m4v format. No way to play this files on booth devices.
I can't really understand why Playback is not be able to rendering the movies or music etc. to the right format life in the background like AirVideo (http://www.inmethod.com/air-video/) do it from Mac to the iOS device.

If only it had the ability to stream BBC HD recordings from my EyeTV Sat folder. I have to use Air Video Server from my iPad 2 to achieve that with conversion on the fly. Other than that it works flawlessly with my iMac/PS3

Plain easy to use and it works without any issues.
If you have a PS3 or X360 you HAVE to own this.

(It reads also Lightroom, iPhoto, iTunes etc. libraries and any folder you specify.)
Equally very nice:
- You can adjust the bandwidth
- Menu bar icon (only when streaming is active! very good)
- Growl notifications
- Quickview thumbnails generation
I use it also to stream content from an external exFAT formatted disk, something that causes problems for my normal NFS sharing.

While i absolutely agree and believe in the approach of keeping the server as light on resources as possible, perhaps the only reason to offer transcoding in some fashion is due to the fact that idevices have a really bad time at 1080p streamed.
PS3 handles 1080p just fine (network permitting) so would be a shame to duplicate/downconvert all my media.

Setup is iMac (2011) Lion OS X 10.7.2, linksys E3200. iMac and ps3 are on wireless network. Ps3 and iMac on static IPs, ps3 in DMZ (read this might fix it but it didn't. Ps3 reports 8mbps for Internet speed test.
I suspected that maybe the Mac was turning off HDD so I tried changing power saving settings. This still didn't work. Is it simply that streaming m4v over wireless is not doable? I can and will run a wire but if that won't work then I'd rather not waste the time doing it as it will be kind of a major undertaking.
Thanks for any help!

I would need more information in order to assist you more efficiently. The MacUpdate comment board is a great place but isn't intended for tech support.

I downloaded and paid for playback the other day and for some reason my serial won't work when I go to add file. Am I right in thinking the text file receipt is the correct file or have I just not received my serial yet? It's been a week!!
I emailed Kugi who have forwarded my email on twice. I have a code and everything.
Please help.

You should have received a Playback license file. If you haven't, or you think it may have gotten corrupted somehow, please email me directly at playback at yazsoft dot com and Ill take care of it for you.

Does PLAYBACK convert MP4 files that are over 4GB or does it stream them as is?

Any advice gratefully recieved!

As mentioned in our FAQ, and my email responses to you; this is not currently possible simply because the SL Firewall does not give you access to all the services that you need to let through. When you activate the firewall, they are OFF by default.
If you have a router on your network, a firewall on you Mac is a little redundant.
If you'd like to discuss this further, I welcome you to join our forums:

The MacUpdate comment section is not really the best place for this type of discussion.

I haven't received an email stating snow leopard firewall is not compatible with Playback. Just a link to a forum post about what ports to open which you cannot do with Snow Leopard Firewall.
It might be worth stating this in your sites FAQs under 'Is Playback compatible with Snow Leopard's Firewall?'.
Also I would also welcome the opportunity to continue this conversation on your forums but I have been waiting since the 24th October for an administrator to activate my account. For now I just get the message 'The specified username is currently inactive. If you have problems activating your account, please contact a board administrator.' I have sent a second request to activate my account but still nothing. Hence my posting on mac update for help resolving the my playback issues, which for someone who has parted money for this software is totally appropriate if I am unable to find answers elsewhere.
Apologies for my tone but I am somewhat frustrated with my experience of using Playback so far.
Regards
Tony

Take a look at the Rivet forums and you'll see that Rivet users are also having problems with the Snow Leopard firewall. Both Yazsoft and Cynical Peak are being blamed for Apple's buggy code.
It's not Yazsoft's fault that the Mac OS X firewall implementation is flaky. It's not Cynical Peak's fault either. There really is absolutely nothing we can do to solve these issues on our end.

My problems with Playback in the end turned out to be a problem with LittleSnitch, running so silently in the background I'd forgotten all about it's use. However, unlike you I was using Leopard, maybe this solution could help solve your issues, but it would include needing LittleSnitch.
If you go to the following:
http://yazsoft.com/products/playback/faqs/
Look under the question "Is Playback compatible with Little Snitch?" here you'll see my solution as was so kindly helped and provoked by the Yazsoft staff, who I've gotta say where fantastically on the ball with their support. In the end I took their help and went a little further until I found what exactly needed to gain access to the network for Playback to function perfectly. Also I have NetBarrier running but not the built-in Firewall.
Hope this helps you out, I know it is seriously frustrating when this software doesn't work, but it really is soooo much better than Rivet it's not fair to compare them.
All the best,
Ryan.

Customers seem to be under the impression that there's some Firewall API for developers to interface with -- there's not. Applications are not supposed to know that the firewall exists and there are no special calls for requesting permission.
The only guideline offered by Apple is to not to self-modify the application package. Playback doesn't. As far as I know, there's nothing else we can do on our end. If I'm wrong or if anyone has any suggestions, please email playback@yazsoft.com or post on the forums.
@Rustman: Playback doesn't attempt any outgoing connections aside from the Sparkle updates. Also, since you have a router, you won't be opening up your computer to the world -- just to your local network. No one can connect to your computer from the outside unless you specifically open a port on your router.
