snowtape makes a nice first impression - but it doesn't last long!

first of all, it has a strange way of buffering music and recordings. while you can specify an own folder, nothing is saved there until you "export" something. instead, an endless buffer file is used. i remember an option in an earlier version of the program, to limit the total size of that buffer, so that your harddrive won't fill up. however, this "fifo"-feature is not available anymore which can end up in a total system crash due to a clogged start-up volume. why not directly write all recorded music to the disk?

secondly, snowtape is very, very buggy and unstable. streams often start stuttering after a few hours of continuous playing. when you stop and restart, the problem is gone. the application also randomly locks up, e.g. after i woke up my mac from sleep. while browsing my recordings, i permanently get a beach ball when i select the next entry, resulting in a force-quit, often resulting in a total loss of all recorded music.

last, but not least, the program features a questionable usability. why do i have a "directory" of radio stations, next to "imported stations", "last imported", and "favorites"? what is the difference between "collection", "last recorded", and "edited"? and why doesn't the application tell me time and date of a recording?

i recommend trying the program thoroughfully, before investing any money.

i've been playing Snowtape for two hours with no problems. i opened Activity Monitor and looked at Snowtape. it has a Virtual Memory size of 3.64 GB and a Real Memory size of 85.6 MB. it's using about 12% CPU. there's also another process called RadioAgent. its Virtual Memory size: 2.38 GB. its Real Memory size: 5.1 MB. it's using about 0.01% CPU.

this is on a MacBook Pro 8,3 -- 8 gigs ram

i've had about 20 or so programs open in the last 2 hours, at the same time for awhile. my free ram has been holding steady at 3 gigs for the last hour. the radio stream is 128k -- i haven't been recording tonight. but when i do record, Snowtape records well. it filters commercials and cuts tracks at their boundaries spot on most of the time. it's easy to use Snowtape's editing functions if all else fails and the tracks need trimmed.

i could use an option for bigger fonts in the playlist sidebar and the program is a little too dark in general -- i can barely see the Home button and the Genres and Country tabs don't even look like tabs to be clicked on. the interface is modern but it's just a little too dark and small with the buttons and things you click on -- esp. on a macbook pro. and believe me, i stretched the window open real big but the text, buttons etc. don't get any bigger.

all in all though Snowtape is running like a fairly optimized piece of software on my mac right now. i hear what you are saying about the "endless buffer file" though. i still have around 500 gigs of hard drive space so i'm not worried about how Snowtape records one long file until you tell it to export some songs to iTunes. and you make some fair points about the UI -- i just deal with it. at least this version removes having to sign into an account to get the Online Directory -- i never understood what that was about.

i like mucking around with Snowtape. it reminds me of when i was a kid and every Sunday K-SHE 95 would play 7 albums in their entirety and we would set up our tape decks and record them. "The 7th Day" it was called. 7 albums on the 7th day. and let's not forget "The KIng Biscuit Flower Hour."

at least this one didn't go belly-up like radio gaga. try it before you buy it -- uh huh. i like it and am fairly happy with it.

if you want to record more than radio streams, Audio Hijack Pro from rogue amoeba is software i feel very safe recommending.

My experience of Snowtape has been much the same as that of mupromo03.2011. I've had a couple of major system freeze-ups after Snowtape has been playing for a few hours, the symptoms being consistent with the "endless buffering" issue.

I also get a lot of stuttery playback and streams that drop and never restart. Even the SnowRemote iOS app (which turns your iDevice into a remote control) seems buggy.

I came to Snowtape from RadioShift, which is no longer being developed. Snowtape has a better feature set and overall design, but the coding problems need fixing before it can be seriously recommended.

I also experiences sever memory leaks and crashes with Snowtape 2.0.12 and 2.0.13 and contacted the developer about it. After a few days, I received a beta version which fixed those issues, shortly after v 2.0.14 was released.
At least for me, 2.0.14 has corrected all problems I had with the last few versions, so you should give it a try.

The problems are less frequent since the update but they're still there. I went to sleep with Snowtape (2.0.14) playing and woke up a few hours later with the fans blowing, my hard disk churning, the Mac almost frozen and about 55Gb of disk space used up. When you have an application like this that tries to eat up every free byte of disk space, it's not only annoying it's actually harmful to your Mac.

I'm a Snowatpe user from the very first version but Snowtape 2 is not worth the money.

First AirPlay is crap and when you use more then one speaker you get a delay between them.

Second Snowtape writes cache files (or something else) to the startup volume and after a while it filled up to 160GB and Lion stopped working because the was no free space at all. After closing Snowtape from the Activity Monitor it releases it.

I don't know why but I now have the problem that I cannot use my Snowtape library any longer. Everytime I open Snowtape it says that the file rights are wrong and the user has no access but I can access and write in Finder. So my current library is unusable :(

I tried to contact the support but they never replied to one of my mails for weeks!!! So it seems that I have to look for an other software. So think twice before you buy Snowtape!

This is an Apple/AirPlay issue. It exists with iTunes, as well (about a 0.5-1.0 second delay between speakers).

Really great app! The UI is very well made

There are however a few things that could be improved:

1- Add for Right-Click in the Directory. My reflex is to right-click on the radio I want, instead of aiming and clicking on the tiny down-arrow symbol for the local menu.

2- "Import as favorite", "Import Station"… The wording is confusing, it should be "Set as Favorite" and "Add a Station". "Import" is an unnecessarily technical term for regular users. Why "import"? Especially for the Favorites, you are not importing anything, the station is already there in the Directory.

Feature request: I would LOVE to pause and rewind the current station at any time, without the advanced planning required to record it.
The need for this is obvious: Sometimes, I missed something and I want to hear it again, like the music title that was announced before when I was not paying attention..
Or… I like that music that is already playing, but I missed the beginning and I want to record it all. So recording should be possible from the real-time buffer.

Funny thing, i sent the exact feature request to the developer of snowtape. I often listen to a song, and wish i could record it from the beginning. It would only require snowtape to buffer, but not save unless one requests the song to be saved to disk, the currently playing song (or perhaps the current and previous).
Send them an email about it. I'm sure with enough people requesting it, they might actually implement it.

I recently bought Snowtape on sale from the MacUpdate Promo.

In my view, it is very "Mac like" and easy to use. The GUI is very pleasing to the eye.

Snowtape does a GREAT job at recording music and does a decent job at figuring out where each song starts and ends.

Since NO Internet recording software does a fantastic job, you must manually edit the track boundaries so the songs start and end at the right spots. This is where Snowtape REALLY FALLS SHORT. Snowtape REGULARLY Freezes and Crashes when editing more than a couple of songs. Sometimes Snowtape will UNFREEZE and come back to life after waiting 4 or 5 minutes. Sometimes it just crashes!!

Worst of all you will LOOSE all of our previous edits when Snowtape crashes. Until these bugs are fixed, I recommend that you QUIT and START UP Snowtape after editing 4 or 5 songs. That way, you will only loose 4 or 5 songs when Snowtape crashes (and believe me it will!!)

The Get ALbum Artwork feature is great when Snowtape cannot figure out which artwork to use. But it stopped working for me. It no longer shows any artwork (even when searching for the "Beatles").

I have been dragging and dropping artwork form Amazon instead but there is a small bug there too. When you drag and drop artwork, the thumbnail is NOT updated. You must switch to another playlist and switch back to see the artwork in the thumbnails.

With all the bugs, FREEZES and CRASHES, I can NOT recommend Snowtape at this time until these problems are fixed.

P.S. I did a fresh install on Snowtape on another Mac running Snow Leopard and the same bugs, CRASHES and FREEZES occur.

Pity. I really like the GUI and features of Snowtape. I just wished it worked better.

FYI: Version 2.0 is a paid upgrade from version 1. From the developer's website:

Purchasing and Updating

Purchasing and Updating couldn‘t be easier now. You can do both completely within the app. Just choose "Purchase Snowtape“ in the Snowtape menu. You have the option of buying a single license or a family pack. If you like to update with a Snowtape 1.x license, you choose an update, click on, "Update“ and enter your old license code. And here is a price table:

Update from Snowtape 1.x $US 16.50
Update from Snowtape 1.x Family Pack $US 22.50
Family Pack Crossgrade Update from Snowtape 1.x $US 30.15

Final prices may vary depending on the country you live in and the currency you choose. If you purchased your Snowtape 1.x license after August 1, 2010 you get an upgrade for free. We are sending you an email within the next 2 business days.

MacZOT has Radio Gaga on sale for $18 until Sunday 10pm PDT. It runs on both PPC and Intel (10.5 and 10.6) and can record multiple streams in the background. It also has scheduled recordings, etc., so has comparable features to SnowTape v2 (although I love the new editing features in SnowTape).

I like SnowTape 2 a lot, but since upgrading I can no longer connect with SnowRemote from my iPhone 2G nor iPhone 4. I have mailed customer support 3 days ago, but no reaction so far. Is anybody experiencing the same? The pairing seems to work, but then the remote host remains greyed-out and nothing happens even after minutes of waiting.

SnowRemote is no longer listed as product on the Vemedio website, the description for SnowTape 2 only mentions the use of the (infrared) Apple Remote, and the support form does not list the latest build of SnowRemote. However, the functionality is still there. Strange.

OK! I Solved this myself. To avoid losing your stations kept locally. You have to place the following Folders on your Desktop. In ~/Documents /Snowtape Change the name to SnowtapeDocuments.~/Library/Metadata/Snowtape. After launching 1.5 Trash the Snowtape Folder in ~/Documents and insert the Folder on your Desktop SnowtapeDocuments.Change the name back to Snowtape. Put the folder Snowtape back into ~/Library/Caches/Metadata ,Then Launch Snowtape and all of your stations will be back.NOW on my G5 I did NOT do any of this but STILL got all my stations.Iused Sparkle to update. On my G4 12"Powerbook I also used Sparkle (the update tab) and lost all my stations and had to use the Directory ending up with 28 stations of my own interest. I have another 12"Powerbook G4 and I followed the example above and got all my stations.I hope this helps someone. I guess I can copy the Metadata and Documents Folder from the other Powerbook to get back the stations previously listed in the LOCAL Directory.

Snowtape records internet radio stations. Listen to your Favorite Radio stations with its high-performance database, Snowtape is able to store thousands of radio stations for you to choose from. You can search for a particular station or just browse the database. You can also add any radio station to your favorites list to help you quickly find the right station for your current mood.

Instant Recording. Instantly Record the program you are listenting to, it's as simple as one-click. Hit the record button while listening to your favorite station and recording starts instantly. Snowtape is able to cut the recordings at audio track boundaries automatically. Snowtape can identify potential commercials or interludes. With the built-in track editor you can cut out any interfering audio you do not wish to be exported.

1-Click Export to iTunes. Simply click the "Export to iTunes" button and the audio track is encoded to high quality AAC audio and saved right into your iTunes library. Album artwork and track titles are automatically exported as iTunes Audio Tags and get incorporated directly into the audio track during export.

Import Internet Playlists. Snowtape can import .PLS and .M3U internet playlist files as well as .Webloc URL files. Simply drop your files onto the radio list or choose "Import Files" from the application menu. You can also provide Snowtape playlist or stream URLs. Snowtape checks every URL and only imports those that work.

Drag & Drop iTunes Radio. As a bonus, Snowtape also understands items coming directly from iTunes. This means you can easily import a radio station onto Snowtape by clicking and dragging from the iTunes list. It works with any radio station you previously imported to iTunes as well as with the complete iTunes radio catalogue.

Get Album Artwork. Snowtape partners with Last.fm to give you the bonus of album artwork and additional album metadata. In most cases, Snowtape can download this information automatically for you. Alternatively, a "Get Album Info" button searches and adds any album info and cover artwork available.
