It has no Preference in the App menu for a start. I wanted to change/get rid of the _decrypt suffix. In the process of looking around I noticed typos in the interface, not a good sign of attention to detail.
The procedure for unlocking a .pdf is even slower, and more cumbersome than Ovis PDF Recover. It only does them one at a time and each involves dragging and clicking and OKing multiple times.
For heavens sake all you are doing is removing the edit password!
Thanks for your comment. The _decrypt suffix is easy to remove actually: simply change the name of the file. The password search speed can be increased by playing with the settings, the more details you can remember about the password the faster the search process is going to be. As for the typos you noticed we will be glad if you report them to support@eltima.com, as we are always willing to improve our solutions and take your comments into consideration.
BUGGY
Even after paying the registration fee and inputing it, the main menu indicates that it is an unregistered demo. Tech support says they are working on this bug.
UNSTABLE
The first time I ran the registered version it hung my computer, but reported that it had discovered the password. Unfortunately, it would not decypt. When I contacted tech support, they began a series of email communications wanting me to try various things and send reports and screenshots to them. If I wanted to buy beta, I would. I paid for a functioning program and this one is questionable. When I asked for a refund, tech support said that I had not provided them sufficient information to document their software was not performing. They seem to intend to keep my money until I log enough hours to satisfy them. Doesn't that make me an employee?!?
SLOW
The good news was the reason the program wouldn't decrypt the first time is because it had not really discovered the password. Now 85 hours into the next run of the program, it has not even completed the 6 character strings (and that was the bottom end of the range I selected). If the Lord doesn't return soon, the program may eventually find the password. I may go back to Elcomsoft's product, which ran quickly under VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro.
As a software developer we want to be sure that our software is malfunctioning. That’s why we asked you to give us more information and make screenshot. Without such information it’s impossible to investigate the issue that you wrote about.
This application has been well worth its price to me. There are many pdf's that cross my desktop that I would like to be able to copy from, or do such things as insert bookmarks for my own future reference. This application has easily decrypted all of them to date because - to my surprise - most of these pdf's have been encrypted without passwords, so that the software can decrypt them very quickly. As a result, pdf's such as computer manuals are now easy to edit with bookmarks and comments using Acrobat. So I'm very happy with the results.
Basically, this is a brute-force cracker with some useful options, such as the ability to suggest characters.
But it's not multi-engine aware, so expect this to take a LONG time. Also seems to spend quite a bit of resource updating the not-too-useful progress indicator -- resources better spent to improve speed.
As a test, I'm running over 5 days now cracking a 9 character password and it looks like it has about 2 weeks left to run. (Mac Pro 3Ghz, 8 core).
I work with hundreds of pdf files on a daily basis and I often have to use applications like PDFKey Pro. Recover PDF Password goes farther than PDFKey Pro but it does not mean that either developer would approve the use of their work for "illegal" purposes.
Your point can be easily twisted to say that e.g. hex editors should not be listed here because they can also be used to perform "illegal" actions on applications. And you would not say that, would you?
Or do you believe that encryption software or network/admin tools like Nmap or KisMAC should have no place here simply because they could get into malevolent hands?
C'mon.

It works, but what a waste of time.
