Layers captures every window, every palette, every menu, every menu and status bar icon, every icon on the Desktop, and even the Dock and the Desktop background for each of your connected displays will be saved as a separate, editable layer in the resulting Photoshop image file.
Features:
AppShot: capture the full content of most Mac applications windows, even if that content is not visible. Every scrollable area will be saved as a PSD layer
WebShot: capture complete web pages directly from Safari, WebKit, Firefox, Google Chrome, Flock, Camino or Opera. Fast
I love this app, use it all the time, but it needs an update for Lion. The masks generated for windows are off (as the shadows have changed in Lion) and the windows in the resulting PSD aren't positioned exactly like they are on screen.
WARNING: This does not appear to work with Safari 5.1.1
Everything on the webpage is just one flat layer. The same as taking a screenshot with Mac OS X. Not editable at, no layers... useless for getting layers from websites in Safari now. Simply doesn't work.
I'm glad the developer has a demo of this, but I also with I hadn't wasted my uncompensated time trying this. The developer should make it clear on this page that Safari no longer works.
Also just tested in all other browsers it says it supports and same thing happened, just one flat layer for the webpage. No layers. Tested in Opera, Camino, Firefox and Chrome.
I tried several apps but LAYERS is simply the best for web publishers.
You can work with any PSD editor on every single element of the screenshot, alpha channel included.
Developers don't keep up with technology enough for this to be useful, right when it was released it was fantastic but in this industry and with the way it was coded, it's no longer useful what so ever.
Layers was brilliant - at first. But somewhere along the line - with browser updates, other software updates - it stopped working.
I can no longer use it for the reason I purchased it - to capture an entire web page. It goes through the motions, then announces that the capture has "failed." No explanation as to why or what to do.
Very, very disappointing.
I really love this program! I bought it in Macpromo and worths each penny! I think this program is a must have for people who make software Guides & Reviews. It will save time on several situations.
One in special is the function "Capture Front Window". The program captures the active window you seeing and save it in a folder. This image file name is based on your computer time. So, it is possible to create a organized sequence of captured files.
Which means, you can make a Step by Step guide of an Application Setting faster than ever! Thanks "wuonm" for this great app!
A very cool application. I dare anyone to use it and not... on
finding the apps layered file open in photoshop ( with every
element moveable within it ) extremely impressed.
As they might say in España... Sorprendente! and Asombrosa!
After the initial surprise, I don't really think it's worth the
bucks for me. But for those that deal exclusively in screen captures
or have the spondoolies to splash - the dough to blow. There is no
reason not to buy this tiny, but very satisfyingly 'wow factor' application.
I love Layers in general, but the new WebShot feature isn't working for me. It "locks" Firefox 3.5 (the final release that came out today, 2009-06-30) with a spinning power/wait bezel overlaid on top of the Firefox window. I can switch to other apps, but Firefox is locked as the topmost app. The only way I can "release" Firefox from Layers WebShot is to kill the Layers process via Activity Monitor or "killall" from Terminal... I hope they resolve this problem, as WebShot sounds like a TERRIFIC new feature.
[Version 1.1]

Firefox 3.5 WebShot has not been thoroughly tested yet, is not fully supported in current version of Layers. It's a case of bad timing. Until yesterday, 30th of June, the official Firefox release was 3.0
We'll update Layers very soon. Sorry for the inconveniences.
By the way, supported versions are: Safari 3 and 4, Firefox 3.0, WebKit r4185+ and Opera 9.5+
