Mach Desktop brings your desktop to life with Quartz Compositions, Quicktime Movies, or Web pages. Mach Desktop also comes built-in with over 20 stunning Quartz Compositions and over 5 beautiful Quicktime movies. You can, of course, choose your own Quartz Composition, Quicktime movie, or Web page to put on the desktop as well. Unlike all other desktop applications which only offer one of these three media types, Mach Desktop offers all three media types in a single convenient application.

Mach Desktop also introduces a concept called the desktop utility, where you can have commonly used utilities living on your desktop. more...

There's no choice to run it in only one display, it automatically runs on both. That's the deal breaker for me. I really don't want this on my main display, just on my secondary display. Oh well.

Because I bought Mach Desktop before it became an Apple Store App, getting updates has become a big pain in the butt.

I have to go to the developer's site and look for the link to upgrade.

And today, looking for 1.0.4, not matter what I do trying to get to his site, I get sent to:

All the links for the App in the App Store also point to this link. Could his site have been hacked? Anybody else having this happen?

Ye, that download link just hangs

Seems to be something seriously wrong with this developer.

Well, I got in touch with the developer and had a great experience. I told him about my upgrading problem and he immediately sent me a way to have further updates via the App store, which for me, was a good solution.

If you have questions, problems, you can contact the developer here:

Mach Software Design

I'm really enjoying the new 1.0.5.

It's a shame that it is only available thru Steve's store.

Plus, WHY no try before you buy?

I really feel bad for people who only use the App Store and pay for things like this, when there are so many free alternatives.

If you are looking for a FREE program to run movies or Quartz Screensavers on your desktop, check out the recently released Screenwatcher.

Thanks for the suggestion, but you should note it's limitations. Screenwatcher at least of this date doesn't seem to support dual displays. I dragged it to the secondary display and it just went grey.

Mach Desktop appears to work well on my Desktop but it appears to have some bugs when playing back QT movies.

Bug 1 -- I cannot hear any sound from the included QT movies. If I use my own movies, I can hear sound. (and yes, I do have the volume UP in the Mach Desktop Preferences).

Bug 2 -- It has trouble looping some of my QT movies. At the end of the loop, the motion stops but I still hear the sound.

I am sure these are small bugs that can easily be fixed.

I also would like to see an option in the MenuBar to EASILY mute the audio without having to go into the Preferences. You will want to do that when you play music in iTunes etc. Better yet, also add the ability to automatically MUTE audio when certain applications like iTunes are running. (My Living Desktop does this).

But unlike My Living Desktop. Mach Desktop does play Quartz compositions on your Desktop. But it does not easily let you use one of your Quartz ScreenSavers as the desktop animation.

I would prefer the ability to use one of your Quartz Screensavers as your Desktop Animation (like WallSaver). (And when you import a new Quartz composition, import into into your list of available Screensavers). Right now you cannot easily use any of their great Quartz animations ALSO as a Screensaver, You will need to do that manually. Pity.

And yes you can display a web page on your Desktop (like MS Active Desktop). But it will probably make your Desktop ugly...

One of the BEST features is its ability to display widgets on your desktop. The widgets do NOT FLOAT on top of the windows like other solutions.

But if you want more control on the layer on which your widget resides, you will need to use another solution like the FREE WidgetRunner.

All in all, MachDesktop has some great features and the price is right. But if you just want to play QT ,movies on your Desktop, please try Mach Desktop first to make sure you can hear audio and the movies loop properly on your Mac. If they do not, I would recommend My Living Desktop. It has more features and appears to work better at least on on my system. If you want to display widgets on your Desktop, you can use the FREE WidgetRunner, It works great standalone or with other programs like My Living Desktop.

This program does a terrific job of putting beautiful moving images on your desktop. Most of the built-in Quartz Compositions are beautiful and interesting, and it's also really cool being able to display a live web page on your desktop if you want.

But the big thing for me is how gracefully Mach Desktop handles running QuickTime files on your desktop. I have dozens of beautiful, and really huge, QT files, and Mach Desktop plays them all with ease. The QTKitserver that runs in the background seems to take way less cpu and memory than other ways I've tried to use to run a QT movie on the desktop -- like using Screeni, or SaverDesktop, or WallSaver to run the SaveHollywood Screen saver (it plays QT movies as a screensaver) on my desktop. Alas, SaveHollywood broke with Snow Leopard, so I can't even do that trick anymore.

After using Mach Desktop all morning, and trying out all kinds and sizes of movies, the Quartz Compostions, and putting different weg pages on my desktop, I was sold. The interface is easy to use and the prefs are a breeze to set up. It just works. I think it's a great buy for just $10, given all that it does, and best of all, it doesn't overtax my machine that way desktop screen savers, for example, seem to do. Highly recommended. The only problem I have now is that my desktop is often so engaging and beautiful, I just want sit and watch it!
